If you have a bottle of red wine that you want to savor over a few nights, there's a better way to store it than simply re-corking or re-capping it and leaving it on your shelf.

To preserve its flavor and aroma, consider decanting the remaining wine into a smaller bottle. The goal is to limit the amount of air in the bottle, reducing the risk of oxidation.

A good approach is to use half-sized wine bottles, which fit around 12 ounces of liquid in them. Most wine stores should sell these smaller bottles that you can reuse later.

Use a funnel to pour the wine from the full-sized bottle into the half-bottle, and then just cap or cork it and store it somewhere dark and cool — the fridge is also an option.

Ensure the half bottle is properly cleaned before pouring the wine in as residual traces of previous wine could mix and potentially ruin the taste of your leftover wine.

Additionally, if your wine doesn’t fit neatly into a 12-ounce half-bottle, you can decant it into another glass bottle that better fits the exact leftover volume.
