The francesinha is an overstuffed sandwich from Porto, Portugal, made with ham, sausage, and steak, covered in broiled cheese, and served in a tomato-and-beer sauce.
This sandwich is a Portuguese version of the French croque monsieur, a hot sandwich made with ham, gruyere cheese, and béchamel sauce.
Created in 1953 by Portuguese chef Daniel Silva, it continues to be a popular lunch staple in Portugal. It’s served in a shallow bowl with sauce and fries often on the side.
