On a 2020 episode of "The Rachael Ray Show," Melissa Clark said that meat should be removed from its original packaging and put into an airtight bag prior to freezing.
Freezing meat in its supermarket packaging can lead to discoloration and freezer burn as the thin plastic is designed for easy access, not freezing.
Using resealable plastic bags that are designed for freezing is essential. Once you place the meat inside, leave as little room as possible for water crystals to form.
When freezing your meat, write the date on it so you'll know when it was stored. The USDA and FDA both recommend freezing ground meat up to three to four months before use.
