Coffee liqueur is at the core of popular drinks like espresso martinis, but it's also delicious on its own. Plus, making it at home is as easy as brewing coffee and boiling water.
Glass and bottle of coffee liqueur
All you have to do is bring sugar and water to a boil and then reduce it down to a simple syrup by simmering. Once this sweet stuff is prepared, you'll introduce a coffee element.

Some recipes call for instant coffee, while others recommend brewed. If you intend to use the former, add it as soon as you remove the syrup from the heat so it dissolves properly.
Instant coffee in a spoon
You'll also typically need less instant coffee by volume than brewed, although you can adjust the amount of coffee to your taste and needs as you experiment.

Once your coffee component is in the mix, simply add the alcohol. You can even experiment with different types of sugar, alcohol, or the amount of syrup to suit your taste.
