Is Tilapia Really As Bad As Some People Say It Is?

Some consider tilapia to be dirty or unhealthy because of the erroneous belief that it is farmed in poor conditions and fed its own waste. However, this isn't necessarily true.
Tilapia is farmed globally, and although manure may be used to fertilize algae and plankton in the ponds tilapia are kept in, it's not used as food for the fish.
If you're still skeptical, Seafood Watch maintains a list of safely farmed tilapia and which to avoid. This ensures shoppers are consuming tilapia that is safe for their health.
Tilapia is also listed as having the lowest mercury levels and is jam-packed with protein, vitamins B12 and D, phosphorus, and selenium. It's an incredibly versatile ingredient.
