French Dip

Although it has French in the name, the French dip traces its roots to one of two restaurants in California, both claiming to be the sandwich's birthplace.
The French dip features thinly sliced roast beef in a crusty French roll and is served with a side of jus dipping. The sandwich may also be entirely dipped in the jus.

General Tso's Chicken

The sweet and sour dish known as General Tso's chicken is named after the famous 19th-century Chinese military commander from the Hunan province.
However, the dish was first created in Taiwan. Its inventor fled China in 1949 to Taiwan; afterward, he moved to New York in the '70s and opened a restaurant that served the dish.

Eggs Benedict

Combining poached eggs, Canadian bacon, English muffins, and hollandaise sauce, Eggs Benedict has become one of the most popular brunch items worldwide.
While it seems European, the dish was created in New York in the 19th century. Again, two restaurants claim to be the birthplace of this iconic dish.

Fajitas

Fajitas are a beloved Mexican dish, but it is one of several Mexican foods that didn’t originate there. Instead, fajitas are a Tex-Mex creation from the 1930s.
The creators were Mexican cowboys working in Texas who were given tough cuts of beef. They would quickly cook the meat over a fire and eat the strips in tortillas.

Italian Dressing

Despite its name, Italian dressing was created in the United States. It first appeared in 1948 at Phillip Sollomi's Wish-Bone restaurant in Kansas City.
Similarly, Ken and Florence Hanna of Ken's Steak House in Framingham also became known for their dressing. Sollomi and Florence claim their recipes were from their Italian mothers.
