If you want to enjoy McDonald's Filet-O-Fish without heading to the drive-thru, you can easily recreate it at home with a few store-bought items: fish, cheese, sauce, and bread.
With the right brands and styles of ingredients, you can't differentiate the homemade version from the chain's original one. The key is to start with the right frozen fish filet.
McDonald's uses wild-caught Alaskan pollock (white fish) for their patties. Find frozen white fish patties in a square shape that's panko-breaded from brands like Stouffer's.
Look for brands marked "for sandwiches" to find fillets big enough to fill one. Next, get soft hamburger buns and pre-sliced yellow American cheese.
For tartar sauce, McDonald's uses a creamy, tangy sauce with a distinct flavor. So, you can use Sir Kensington's, which replicates the McDonald's version with a hint of citrus.
