Selecting the sweetest peaches at the store is an exercise that involves most of the five senses: sight, smell, touch, and, of course, taste.

Your eyes should look for peaches with deep, vibrant colors like golden yellow, warm bluish pink, or even deep red, depending on the variety. Avoid peaches with green undertones.

You can also look for a wrinkle around the stem. This means the peach is fully ripe and has lost some moisture, further concentrating its sugars and contributing to peak sweetness.

To find a sweet peach with your nose, just bring a peach close to your nose and take a little whiff. If you smell a pungent, sweet scent, it’s ripe and sweet.

Touch is also an important tool in your arsenal, as a ripe peach will have a little give to it under gentle pressure. This yield means the fruit is juicy and ready to eat.
