Bourbon cherries are regular cherries soaked in bourbon, vanilla extract, sugar, and spices. They can add a nuanced, sweet and spicy touch to any whiskey-based cocktail.
You can buy bourbon-soaked cherries online or at specialty grocery stores. According to The Stand's beverage director Deena Sayers, you can also make them yourself.
Use dark, sweet cherries with the pits removed. Sayers notes that you can speed up the process and soften the cherries a bit by simmering everything together on the stove.
"They are the perfect match for Old Fashioned and a Manhattan, where their sweetness and subtle boozy depth enhance the whiskey's inherent character," Sayers said.
