How Long Does An Open Jelly Jar Actually Last?

NEWS

By HENNA BAKSHI

Per the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an unopened jar of jelly lasts a year in the pantry if stored in a cool, dark place, whereas an opened jar lasts six months in the fridge.
Although preservatives are commonly used in store-bought jellies to deter mold and extend shelf-life, it’s best to use up a jar of jelly within six months of opening it.
Before using an opened jar of jelly, make sure to check for signs of spoilage, like separation of water and sugar, yeasty off-odors, alcohol-like flavors, or the presence of mold.
While the jar’s seal limits the jelly’s exposure to oxygen, opening it helps oxygen and moisture penetrate, thus helping living organisms like mold thrive and decompose the jelly.
Preservatives and fridge temperatures can only stave off the decomposition for a certain amount of time. To be safe, mark your jars with the opening date and use them accordingly.
