Despite its long history dating back to the 1800s, A&P filed for bankruptcy in 2010 and again in 2015. Ultimately, all locations were closed on November 25, 2016.
A&P was once the largest retailer in the world, but various factors contributed to the eventual end, including increased competition from other grocery chains.
Originally, A&P wasn't actually a grocery store — it started as a mail-order tea company with an entirely different name. Over time, it expanded and offered more items.
By 1917, A&P had become the most successful supermarket chain in the entire country and held that record until 1962. Signs of trouble began to crop up.
Combined with the increase in competition from other companies and the lack of willingness to adhere to modernization and customer feedback, A&P faded into the background.
