Arby's opened in 1964 in Boardman, Ohio, with a small menu consisting of only roast beef sandwiches, soft drinks, milkshakes, and a potato chips side dish.
Roast beef was part of the chain's original plans, as it was started as an alternative to burger-centric fast food. Today, roast beef sandwiches are still at the chain's core.
A decade after Arby's opened, the menu started undergoing major changes. Multiple sandwiches were introduced in the '70s, including one without roast beef — the ham and cheese.
Menu expansion has continued since then. More sandwiches have been added, including fish sandwiches, the drink menu has expanded, and desserts have been added.
