Half An Onion Is The Cheap Way To Clean Your Grill

When it comes to cleaning a grill, half an onion is a great alternative to chemical cleaners and wire grill brushes, the bristles of which can scratch the grates or fall inside.
To start, preheat the grill to about 400–450 degrees F for 10 minutes. Then, stick a long grill fork through half an onion and scrub the grates with the cut side of the onion half.
As the grill’s heat turns the water in the onion into steam, it loosens charred debris from the grates. Simultaneously, the onion juice, being acidic, dissolves stains.
Additionally, the antibacterial properties of allicin, the pungent chemical found in onions, will ensure that your grill grates are thoroughly sanitized as you scrub them.
Lastly, the oils from the onion will form a thin film on the grates. This will infuse a bit of onion flavor into the foods you grill and prevent foods from sticking to the grates.
