Fresh Strawberry Topping

This topping is a treat served on ice cream, frozen yogurt or banana splits. Try it as well with pound cake or angel food cake.

Instructions

  1. 1Wash, stem and quarter the berries. Place them in a 1-quart glass bowl. Add the orange zest and sugar, and stir to coat the berries evenly with sugar.
  2. 2Cover bowl with plastic wrap (heavy duty preferred) and set in a microwave oven. Cook with 650 watts for 3 minutes. The mixture will bubble up as it comes to a boil.
  3. 3Remove bowl from the microwave and uncover carefully to avoid steam. Stir in vanilla and let the mixture cool to room temperature. Serve as is or chill before serving.
