Buttermilk Chocolate Cake

Ingredients (10)

  • 2 Cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 sticks butter (melted)
  • 4 Tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 Cup water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 Cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

My mom has been making this cake for more than 30 years. It is by far the best choclate cake I have ever had. It goes with Buttermilk Chocolate Frosting, which should be listed in this recipe section as well.


  1. 1Preheat oven to 350.
  2. 2Mix flour, sugar and baking soda.
  3. 3In saucepan, mix butter, cocoa, water and bring to boil.
  4. 4Pour butter mixture over flour mixture and mix until well-incorporated.
  5. 5Beat in eggs, buttermilk, vanilla and nuts.
  6. 6Pour batter into 13×9×2 pan.
  7. 7Bake 35 minutes.
