I purchased pastured extra large eggs from my local farmer’s market. Cracked one on a hot pan and got a very bloody egg including a coagulated goop that you see on top of a yolk. Researching this it seems that it’s not a fertilized egg but an attached blood vessel when the egg pass through the chicken before shell formation. Is it safe to eat? I cook my eggs with runny yolks.

I’m looking for fresh soursop in particular. T&T sells a 2 pound size for about $35! Is there another ethnic store, perhaps, that sells it for less? I’m also searching for fresh jack fruit, variety of dragon fruits, young coconut, etc. I find T&T prices quite high. I prefer to shop in Vancouver and Burnaby.

I bought this fruit in hope it’s a soursop. However the sign at the market reads, “Taiwanese Sugar Apple.” Here’s the photos of it. What is it and when does one know it’s ripe? Google images did not help as the pictures look identical.

I want to make banana bread in my slow cooker. However, it’s not clear whether I put my pan in the slow cooker with or without the ceramic insert. I know I should put a rack under the loaf pan and paper towel under the closed lid. But do I use the insert? If I do use the insert will it cause it to crack after constant dry use?

Looking for hops or hop tea in Vancouver BC. Preferably organic/non-sprayed. Not sure of varieties but heard it's an excellent sleep aid. Thank you for any leads.

This place has very fresh olive oil. http://www.dioliva.ca
Bring your clean bottle back for a discount on your next refill. She's very knowledgeable about her products. Try the pizza next door. http://albuco.ca They use her olive oil. Delicious!

Hahaha. Hipsters. Love Korean food. I heard that their Richmond location closed down due to the newer Hon's generation squandering money on luxury travels and spending. Perhaps the Chinatown location went through the same mismanagement. It's rather sad that the small hole in the wall I once ate at will be no more.

I don't know the name. My mom always knew what I meant when I said "baht tee" meaning "white snack," I think.

Thanks so much Chowhounders! I knew I could count on you. Your answers has led me to a wealth of info online.

I found a sweet snack from Zhao Mah Bakery on Pender Street in Vancouver Chinatown. I'm trying to find the proper name and recipe. The place labeled it as "rice cake." It looks more like a steamed smooth sturdy white pudding with a bit of stickiness. It was in a foil tart shell. Does anyone know the proper Chinese and Anglo name or have the recipe? This brings back good memory of my mom who use to make it for me in her special non-stick ceramic shells which I think she brought back from China with her.

Looking to buy fresh BC strawberries from a ready-pick or u-pick farm. I need about 30 pounds. I normally call ahead to Bob Featherstone Farm in Richmond but lost his phone number and it's nowhere to be found online. Does anyone know if they are still in business? Or can someone suggest another farm in Burnaby, Vancouver or Richmond? I have been looking for organic/non-sprayed BC strawberries but it's not as important. And I'm guessing that BC strawberries may be ready soon. Thank you for any leads.

I have a Kitchenaid purchased from 2000. It seems the current models are less well built as I see reviews are average. My model still runs well and I'm guessing parts back then were better.

My sister has been borrowing mine for making vegetarian food and I'm reluctant to give her my workhorse. Can someone suggest an affordable one I can gift her? She has broken 2 very old cheaper models (the shaft chipping or breaking off.).

Previous posts I feel do not reflect the current changes in popular brands.

Thanks for your help.

I want to make authentic Chinese recipes and other healthy snacks with organic red dates. . Don't know how different they are from regular dates. The medicinal quality of red dates is that it lowers cholesterol and repair other maladies. I also want to buy organic dried goji berries and chrysanthemum flowers. I figure it would be ideal to buy in bulk as in those Chinatown stores that display them in open bins. Can someone direct me to such a place that sells high quality certified organic dried foods like this? I live in Vancouver BC Canada and prefer to shop in person.

Interesting. Got out of my winter blues by baking squash muffins. I had to force myself to get started but once I got going I was industrious

sumasmountainfarms.ca has totally pastured, free running/scratching, bug and grass eating, non-soy fed SPCA certified chicken and eggs. They deliver at a cost of $15 for a minimum of $150 purchase. They also sell grass-fed pastured beef and pork. Not bad if you plan to stock up for a few weeks at a time.

I was told by a few wine reps that French and Italian wines are generally organic and, even better, biodynamic. They have strict agricultural laws. They do not necessarily go through the accreditation for the North American market, that is, labelling it organic, due to the high cost. Albeit, they can be more expensive than domestic wines due to tariffs. However, I think my health is more important and I find the wine tastes better without the chemicals. When I think fluoride I think brain calcification. Also, New Zealand is big on biodynamic farm practice.

The knife forum is the most informative I've seen after researching for a week. Thanks so much. That black marker tip is the BEST!!!!

Where in Vancouver can I buy this? I also need to buy a round grill like the ones they use in restaurants, preferably no Teflon. I don't have time to prepare the food and I need to bring these items to a party. Thanks for your help.

I sometimes eat at Ethical Kitchen in North Vancouver. Recently found out her parents are owners of Pasture to Plate!

I read that an ingredient in corn is concentrated in the corn which is something I try to avoid. Whenever I eat corn my muscles and joints become stiff and sore. Maybe this is from GMO/non-organic corn.

I have contacted every possible egg producer in BC and they all feed the hens some form of corn. So I guess the next best thing are hens that are fed non-GMO/organic corn.

To update, I am now eating a limited amount of wheat, grains and rice. I make my own sourdough starter to make Lumberjack pancakes, I soak my rice overnight minimum etc.

I missed this type of carb so whatever is not part of paleo, I try to make it more bioavailable. I drink the occasional komucha, eat Bubbies pickles, sauerkraut, etc.

I've also gone back to eating some *gasp* conventional desserts with limits of course. But these are quality $$$ kind so that keeps me to a minimum.

I've resolved to endure a little bit of stiff joints and muscles (due to inflammation from the banned foods) in order to enjoy the love of eating. Prior to this I was in constant deeper pain, fogginess, and a lot of thyroid-ridden symptoms.

Through the year and a half that I've been doing paleo I have learned a LOT! - from nutritional value to food myths to the politics of food. Knowledge is so important in knowing where your food comes from and, for me, this had made the biggest impact on how I eat. To follow a diet restrictively is so confining and unenjoyable.

What I like about paleo is they recommend you tailor your eating habits for you and to recognize the baddies (vegetable oils, mass meat factories, junk food), etc. And the info is filled with vaidated science literature Yes, that can be said for raw, vegan and vegetarian but my health begs to differ when I tried those diets.

My workplace has a new Breville pod machine. I cannot drink the coffee, tea or chocolate provided due to the caffeine and chemicals.

Does this machine function somehow where I can insert my own mix? That is, make my own pods? I want to make my own hot chocolate. If this is possible what other hot drink can I make to utilize this machine without having to use the store bought pods? I don't have a manual and I notice there is a compartment to put your own coffee. Is there a special cup/pod I have to use?

I'd like to add, are any of the ones listed corn and soy free? And is the feed organic?

I'm looking for organic eggs which are from
pasture-raised chickens. I don't want the chickens to be fed soy or corn. Any leads?

Kerrygold grass-fed butter produced from the cows that eat special Ireland grass! Lots and lots of it.

But be careful. A border guard told a restauranteur crossing with a huge amount that it was illegal. I'm sure it's a political thing with the dairy board.

After reading MANY bad reviews about customer service and the snooty atmosphere I hesitated in giving them my hard earned money. Not even good food can mask my distaste for bad service.

Buuuuuut, now it looks like I should go check them out now. Thanks for the heads-up.

One last help is to read icecreamscience.com

Sounds like you can manipulate the quality of ice cream via science and come out with great ice cream without an expensive unit.
