Glad you liked it! The only problem I have with birria (in general) is that I keep eating it way after I'm full.

I know it's not always cost effective for restaurants in terms if space usage, but I'm definitely an advocate for large, high-backed, booths. They are quiet and you never feel like your dining neighbors can listen in on your conversation.

Trust is off the hook wonderful. I'll add this place to our list.

You are so absolutely correct about the service. The food is outstanding, but the service is so solid. Even though it's a casual place, there is no "Hey guys..." type of language. Their clientele includes families and senior folks and they treat people as such.

Cafe 222 does a good hash, and The Mission does a roast beef hash. Hob Nob Hill for sure has homemade hash.

She is so great. She is 92 and has the curiosity of a kid. It makes our weekly outings a lot of fun.

We made Birria in the slow-cooker last Saturday afternoon. I made flour tortillas (from my Grandma's recipe) and they came out perfect. Oh. My. God. We stuffed ourselves to the gills.

If you want to try Birria, I can recommend Fernandez Birria in Southbay, totally worth the drive, and Birrieria Negro Durazo in Chula Vista.

Hey! I think we could have birria wars in San Diego. We had lunch at Birria Negro Durazo today, 415 Broadway, in the north section of Chula Vista. Loved it. As we drove through the area we noticed several other birria places around.....

I have not been back to Fernandez though, I really want to take my grandmother. I got her hooked on birria tacos at Las Mulas so I know she'll go nuts at Fernandez.

LEATHERBY'S!!!!!! Good god I just remembered. Christ I wasn't going to be able to sleep tonight if I couldn't remember the name. They had these massive ice cream sundaes.

whoaaaaa....just had a serious 80's head flip. Rusty Pelican! And Chateau Basque, that's a good one. I used to work at the Alpine Bakery, which supplied Chateau Basque with their baked goods.

Now I have a question for the East County folks....what was the name of the sundae shop located in El Cajon, down the street from Parkway Plaza, in one of those little strip malls there, would have been late 80's....at one point they changed hands and changed their name to "Oh My Gosh" sundaes....but the original iteration was a name, someone's last name I think.

Will they be providing the same service as they do in La Mesa? Slow, inattentive, unable to replace silverware, unprofessional, and overall mediocre? sorry to be snarky. I've eaten at FT in La Mesa twice and both times it was hilariously bad.

We dined at Trust last night to celebrate our 11 year wedding anniversary. This place is going to be a problem because all the food is so completely delicious and the service is on point.

oh no! well, shoot. That was one of the few places to have a proper dining experience near the Gaslamp.

It's downtown, but I believe Cafe Chloe has a room that can accommodate 6 people. Totally casual and left field idea: the new Thai55 space at 10th and Broadway. It's a casual place but the dining room is very spacious and I'm sure they could shift the tables for you. And the food is good.

love love LOVED dinner. The room is beautiful. I understand why some would be put off by the industrial effect of the design, but we really enjoyed it. The noise level was not that bad at all. We were seated in a corner booth on the west wall, so it's possible our positioning made for a quieter area.

A smart, professional young woman named "Ari" waited on us. She asked if we had dined there before, and when we said no, she excitedly walked us through the menu's classics and new items. She was the kind of server that made us sit back and enjoy, because we KNEW this woman was going to handle business, and she did. Everything from refolding napkins, replacing silverware, to timing and appropriate wine selection, was on point.

The food was a stunner. The chef's "amuse" was his take on a deviled egg, so just a touch of the molecular edge without being the way over the top "this looks like a steak but actually it's a strawberry dessert...." situation. We dove into dinner with the lamb belly "lolly pops." Fatty, sweet, and delicious. Our next two courses were the Buttermilk Biscuit with foie gras butter (because...foie gras), and the Chinese Sausage, which was either made in-house or by a local person, because it was too fresh and wonderful not to be. Next up was the Heirloom tomatoes with pasta (again, must have been made in-house) with goat cheese, which the perfect refresher for the Dry-Aged Ribeye. Ever since Born and Raised, I, we, have been talking obsessively about the wonderful subtleties of dry-aged flavor. This rib-eye was presented in a simple fashion, grilled to rare loveliness with a dash of salt and pepper. For dessert we ordered the Japanese Strawberry Cheesecake with Green Tea sorbet. This was not too rich and the Green Tea sorbet made for a great finish to a great meal.

A win. We will go back. Many years ago when were dating, we used to frequent Region aka "that which shall not be named" in our house because we miss it so much, and Parallel 33. We were heartbroken when they closed because we had enjoyed so many great meals in those rooms. I'm glad San Diego has new places of the same ilk where we can have the same wonderful dining experiences in the near future.

Reviving and old thread.

Juniper and Ivy, yea or nay? For my birthday dinner. The last year of my 4th decade. The other option is Trust, where we have dined before, so Juniper and Ivy is next up on the list.
