Try Don and Charlies in Scottsdale. Great atmosphere, great food, great service. They have delicious BBQ also but it's a bit more upscale. You can also try BobbyQ...fun place also with good food, great atmosphere and you'll have no problem staying within your budget.

I've spent a lot of time in the UK and you can't even begin to compare what they're doing in the US with their UK presence. Two totally different things. Am I the only one that thinks the name "Fresh and Easy" is a little bit suggestive?! ;-)

Not your fault at all, and I wasn't expecting Mary Elaine's quality of service at such a place.....but this was completely outrageous, and made more difficult since we had a 2 year old with us who only has so much patience. The food was good, however, once we ate it out of the cartons at home! Was it merely ironic that two tables that arrived 30 mins after we ordered - both tables were all Asian, were served, and finished their meals in the time that we waited for our entrees?

I guess what bothered me the most was that instead of simply apologizing and adjusting the bill, they made some crazy excuse that my soup slowed down the kitchen! Huh?!?!?!? :-)

We went tonight for the first time, based on so many rave reviews on this board. Our experience was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in the last five years. My wife, son (2 years old) and I arrived at about 6:30. There were about 5 full tables,....and 5 or 6 empty ones. We sat ourselves (no one was around to seat us), got my son a high chair, and sat down. It took about 10 minutes before anyone came to give us menus and take our drink orders. We ordered soup, two entrees and something for my son to eat. It took about 20 min for our soup to come out and it was delicious, although we think that Swadee Thai has better Tom Ka soup. We then proceeded to wait over an HOUR for our two entrees to arrive. During this time, every table that arrived after us got ALL their food (first and main courses) AND finished their meals and paid the bill. We were the last ones there. We repeatedly asked what was going on with our food and they kept saying "up soon." Finally, I found our server and told her we wanted it all to go. She said "it will be next." Well, it wasn't. Two other tables got served while ours was supposed to be next and it was another 20 mins before our food finally came out, wrapped to go. In total, we were there nearly two hours and all we had was soup. They had the nerve to charge me full price, gave a half hearted apology and said that things were slow because I ordered soup! I could have flown to Bangkok faster. I'll never go back to a place that has terrible service, rude employees and the lack of an ability to even offer a sincere apology. They don't even have the excuse of being really busy.

Instead of Ikea try Smart and Final. I make a caviar and egg "pie" and buy the black lump caviar there and it's fantastic and priced right.

I see the same places popping up again and again on here....which is probably because they're great places. But I thought it would be fun if everyone named one restaurant that they think the rest of us have never heard of....those off-the-beaten path places that you would only go into if someone else tolf you how great it was.

I'll start: Frasher's, on Scottsdale/Oak. Serves many of the favorites of St Louis, my hometown, including St Louis Style pizza (extremely thin, cut in squares, unique Provel cheese), toasted raviolis and gooey butter cake. Not fine dining by any measure, but a real taste of home and something different for the rest of you.

Anyone else want to jump in?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I actually ended up at one of my old favorites....Don and Charlies. I've been eating there since I moved here in 1984. I sat at the bar, had a great New York Strip (get the char crust), salad, baked potato and their yummy chopped liver to start. The bartended (Mandy) was friendly, Don Carson (the owner) and I chatted for a while, and there were friendly people at the bar as usual. Highly recommended; I can honestly say that I've probably eaten at Don and Charlie's more than any other restaurant in my life....with the exception of the usual fast food suspects.

Anyone have any thoughts on a place for a good dinner by myself...preferably at a counter? Would prefer to stick to N. or S Scottsdale, if possible but not mandatory.

We've been MANY times and think it's fantastic. It's a bit of a scene - lots of beautiful people - but that doesn't have to be a "bad thing." People are so quick to judge places with a scene as lacking substance, but you have to look at the food first, and their food quality is excellent. (The fact that it's in N. Scottsdale doesn't make it inherently bad or devoid of substance, although there is certainly a lot of that around)

The sushi is fresh and beautifully presented; they also have a great selection of non-sushi items, many of which I've tried and enjoyed. We generally prefer Hiro as our first pick for quality sushi, but find ourselves going to Pure more and more. If you like beer with your sushi, try a Harbin. It's an excellent Chinese beer that pairs quite well with sushi.

I've been wondering if it's worth trying. My office is close to there. I never see any cars there, and I figured they would go out of business as soon as they built that building on the parking lot which blocks the restaurant's exposure to Hayden. I generally stay away from Indian restaurants that offer lunch buffets...but perhaps I'll take a gamble and try it. Let me know if you give it a try....

Are there any good Indian restaurants in N Scottsdale? We've been to the place at Civic Center and love it, but it's too far for carry-out. We used to eat at Bollywood Brasserie but I think they closed. Anyone have any suggestions?

i'm in the Thompson Peak/FLW area....any place that you love around there? We're so sick of the same places and usually go out to eat 4-5 times per week.

Glad you enjoyed. It's not a real deli, but the food is pretty good. Seems like you frequent a lot of the places that I do, based on some of your posts.

Thanks for the review Barry. I had posted about this place a few days ago wondering if anyone knew anything about it; you're the first person I've encountered that has given it a try.

How would you rate it as a place for a casual/quick/inexpensive lunch place during the week?

We like Jade Palace too; my only complaint is that it's often quite greasy...not uncommon for egg foo, however. We'll definitely give Red House a try; I've never heard of it.

Can anyone recommend really great Egg Foo Young anywhere in the Phoenix metro area? Where I grew up every Chinese restaurant had great "egg fu", but in my 25 years as a Phoenician I've yet to find any that I loved. Believe it or not, the best I've found is at The Red Chopstick in Sedona! I'm seeking big, fat, delicious patties.....not these little anorexic ones! I'm open to ideas and would love to hear from my fellow hounds.

Believe it or not, my wife and I drive all the way from N. Scottsdale to 27th Ave and Northern to get the Mac and Cheese at Bobby Q. I know it's now "gourmet" but it's the best we've found......and we've tried them all! Nothing quite as good as hot, bubbly mac-n-cheese with your ribs! We actually went last week and brought an extra container home to have in the fridge.

It's sad but true: they make a good one! Fortunately, this website is anonymous because my own ego keeps me from wanting to be known as "the guy that loves Quizno's soups!" Oh wait...I just revealed that I'm a guy. Baaaaad.......

Does anyone know anything about "Javinos," a new restaurant/wine bar on Northsight in N. Scottsdale? Not that we need another wine bar (how can alll these places survive?), but I'm curious about the menu and whether anyone has tried it yet.

It's a bit hard to find. It actually faces Hayden and is right next to Muze Lounge.

Love the Golden Wings, but their "charge extra for everything" policy is maddening. I swear that we walk out of there with $5 in blue cheese charges every time we eat there.

You might try Andreoli Italian Grocery, link below. They generally sell "the real deal" and everyone in there at night is speaking in Italian! Otherwise, you're stuck with the mass produced stuff which I'm sure they have at Cost Plus World Market, etc.

I'm Jewish, so it's part of my genetic make-up to argue about who has the best bagles...among other things that we argue about. Even worse, I'm married to someone from the east coast and she knows her bagels and has very strong opinions. I've been going to a bagel place in the shopping center in Scottsdale at the NE corner of Hayden and Frank Lloyd Wright. It's called Big City Bagels and has - in my opinion - the best bagel in town. Way better than Kashmans, Chompies, or New York Bagels and Bialys. Not sure why this place isn't busier. They also make a mean sandwich...the roast beef sandwish is HUGE and delicious, same with the whitefish sandwich.

I just had lunch there today and was reminded of how good it is and thought I'd share it with my fellow Hounds. As the chains (Einstein's, etc) continue to infiltrate the bagel world, this independent place passes muster. Worth a try. The two guys that own it couldn't be nicer and deserve to succeed.

Try Native New Yorker...but the Scottsdale location hasn't been as good as the west side locations. I agree with the Uncle Sams rec.....consistently good wings and the coldest pitchers of beer you've ever had. AZ88 at the Scottsdale Civic Center has great wings, but it's more of a hip bar and not a sports bar at all. Finally, give Zipps a try. Good wings and a great sports bar setting.

That's really too bad. I was a big fan of the original Pischke's but it was really starting to lose its luster around the time of Chris Pischke's untimely passing. I was hoping that McGrath could turn the place around and freshen it up with new atmosphere and menu. Maybe they'll get it right soon.

One more comment: dinner is great, as you all have attested. But breakfast is the best part of the whole experience. Freshly caught trout with corn oysters for breakfast....who knew that could be so good!

I just returned from my annual journey to Garland's Lodge, in Sedona, AZ. If you don't know the history of the place, you can check it out at www.garldandslodge.com, but - in short - it's an old rustic lodge on Oak Creek with gorgeous guest cabins throughout the property. It's definitely an Arizona tradition; my parents had been going there for decades and my wife and I took over the annual tradition about three years ago. Basically, you stay in the cabins and they serve you an INCREDIBLE breakfast each morning at the lodge, an afternoon tea with snacks, and a great dinner each night. The kitchen is run by chef Amanda Stine (check out her cook book; great recipes and history of the lodge). No phones, no television, no cell reception (tough for me!)....and it invites you to relax fully.

Unfortunately, nights at Garlands are sold out years in advance but - if you're patient and a little bit flexible, you can often get in on a cancellation. People fight over their nights at Garlands in their divorces....seriously. Like a reservaton at The French Laundry, it's that coveted.

We usually stay Friday and Saturday nights, and had fabulous Swiss Eggs and freshly caught trout for breakfast and wild salmon and rack of pork for dinner. You don't get a choice of your dinner entrees, so let them know if you have any dietary requirements and they will be honored. We don't even tell them my wife's requirements; they always remember from prior years. They also remember that it's our anniversary weekend, and they put our anniversary on the menu, and even get the year right. In about 40 years I'll need them to remind me how many years we're ve been married! Nice personal touches. They do have a very limited number of dinner reservations each night for people not staying at the lodge.

The best part of the experience is that you get seated with other "Lodgers" at dinner. It's part of the tradition; they usually give us our own table on the first night and we sit with someone new on the second night. Irononically, this was the first year that we had our own table both nights. (Did we look creepy? Smell bad?!?!) It was nice to be together, but being seated with someone else (at least one night) adds to the charm of the place and we always come back with some great stories. We always meet interesting people, trade stories, and go back to our cabin at night with great stories. People often go the same weekend each year, so you start to know people who are there the same weekend as you year after year.

My wife and I are usually the youngest people there (we're in our early 30s) but feel that the Garlands tradition is one for all ages. We always feel a little bit out-of-place at first due to our age, but that goes away. We live in N. Scottsdale, and it's so refreshing to escape the conspicuous consumption that surrounds us for a place that harkens back to simpler times. It puts other Sedona fine dining to shame. If you were considering L'Auberge, try Garland's first. You won't be disappointed and you will have found one of our state's true gems.

I know that the Garlands folks are Chow Hounds too, and I wanted to say thanks for another incredible weekend full or relaxation and food. Garlands certainly doesn't need the press; they have waiting lists each year, but I thought that it was worth mentioning on the SW Board since I've never seen it here before and it is a uniquely Arizonan foodie tradition. We'll see you next year and thanks, as always, for the memories.

Is anyone aware of any French restaurants other than Zinc Bistro that serve an authentic Cassoulet? 5th Ave Bistro used to, but they're no longer. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
