My all time fav is Balthazar in New York City. (SoHo) I tend to like authentic French bistro fare (hence my affinity for Zinc) but Balthazar sets the global standard. It's more of a french bistro than the bistros in Paris. I once ate a late breakfast, lunch and an early dinner there...all in the same day. If you don't have the Balthazar cookbook I HIGHLY recommend it....even if just for the forward about how the restaurant came to be. Or I'd be happy to scan the intro for you and email it to you...gives you a great sense of the place and will make you want to book a flight for NYC.

Yasu on Shea. My experience there was only a slight notch below Sea Saw. And that's a big compliment! It's not all sushi...lots of interesting grilled options too.

Could not agree with you more on the LGO comment, particularly to the namesake Le Grande Orange. Yeah, the food is good. But I'd also refer to In-N-Out Burger as good. (err.....maybe great, actually) A lot of places are good and good doesn't cut it anymore. I think that Chelsea's Kitchen is truly excellent; basic food prepared well in a nice setting. But I just don't get Le Grande Orange. The food is barely good. There isn't enough seating. Parking....forget it. Service? There isn't any. And you hit the nail on the head regarding people attributing some sort of "cool factor" (imagine me doing little quotes with my fingers as you read that) to it and feeling like they are in some sort of ethereal "cool place." I lived in San Francisco. I lived in LA. And I've spent a lot of time in NYC. And it's no less "cool" here; it's just different. The only attributes of Le Grande Orange that remind me of San Francisco are the inflated prices and lack of parking; and it doesn't make me feel like I'm anywhere else any more than Kentucky Fried Chicken in Central Phoenix makes me feel like I'm in Lexington, without the humidity....

Delux and Fate. Delux - dry, over-lean beef and servers with attitude. Fate - small portions of mediocre greasy food and servers with twice the attitude of Delux. So what if they have a dj...the noise doesn't cover-up culinary mediocrity.

Locally? Binkley's (although it's not the type of food you can eat often), Zinc Bistro (we do eat there often....lunch and dinner) and Don and Charlies for good, basic, well prepared steaks and bbq. I love Sabuddy, Mastro's, and the ocassional In-N-Out burger too! ;-)

Don and Charlie's. It's not a "foodie" destination, but it has been serving quality food with great atmosphere and fantastic servers for well over 20 years. Great bbq ribs, excellent steaks (order it with the "char crust"), unique creamed spinach as a side, and a complimentary chopped liver platter than beats even my Jewish grandmother's!

Other than the usual fast food haunts that you frequent over the years out of convenience, I've probably eaten at Don and Charlie's more than any other restaurant and I've never had a meal that was anything less than great. Rarely do I see it mentioned here, unless I'm mentioning it!

I posted the menu on another thread if you want to spend some time salivating over your computer! :-) BTW, we spent NYE last year at Trader Vics. It was great! Pretty funny at Binkley's last night at midnight...the entire kitchen staff - chefs, dishwashers, etc - all paraded through the restaurant banging on pots and pans and then went back into the kitchen and resumed their work. Pretty hilarious considering how seriously Kevin Binkley takes his work.

That's a compliment....I think! Thanks!

Make a point of going. I have eaten at some of the "best" restaurants in the country and abroad and I still feel like Binkley's tops them all. INCREDIBLE food an an incredibly unpretentious, casual and friendly setting. The experience is top notch.

Thought everyone might enjoy reading the menu from our 10 course tasting menu from New Year's Eve at Binkleys. We're usually stuffed after their five course tasting menu, so we weren't sure how we would fare with 10 courses (and wine pairings), but as usual they paced it extremely well and kept portion-sizes moderated so that 10 courses was filling but not ridiculously so. We were seated at 9 pm and our final course was served precisely at midnight. Last time we had the five course menu they served us no fewer than 7 amuse bouches, but last night they only did the duck and sherrry consomme to start, an amuse bouche of five different items second, a fruit cocktail and an extra dessert with the check. The menu is as follows; it was a spectactular meal and I do not think that anything compares to Binkley's. This meal was a bargain at $200 per person plus $75 for the wine pairing. New Year's Eve is usually a rip-off but this meal was worth every penny and the service was nothing short of spectactular yet unpretentious. The food was free of molecular gastronomy gimickry and instead focused on great ingredients creatively prepared.

Citrus Cured Salmon Roulade w/ osetra caviar, shaved baby fennel, toast point, sauce vert

Mache & Black Truffle Salad w/ heirloom potatoes, proscuitto, shaved red onion, baby artichokes (note: they were VERY generous with the truffles)

Crispy Seared Foie Gras w/ red wine poached pear, cashews, baby arugula and port glaze

Lobster Ragout w/ gnocchi, pearl onions, fava beans and lobster bisque

Olive Oil Poached Swordfish w/ white bean puree, pattypan squash, oven dried tomatoes, balsamic, and olive oil (note: neither my wife or I particularly care for swordfish and were looking forward to this course the least, but this was unlike anything we have had before. It was slightly pink in color and had the softest texture we've ever seen...almost like sashimi)

White Truffle & Porcini Agnolotti w/ hedgehog & clamshell mushrooms, purple scallions (note: Chef Binkley bought one pound of white truffles for last night's meal at a cost of $5,400 per pound; they were half the cost last year!)

Duck Squared - seared breast, rillette, huckleberry crepe, sugar snap peas

Japanese Wagyu New York Strip w/ mustard Brussels sprout leaves, creamy cauliflower (note: this was the REAL Wagyu beef from Japan and so soft that it literally melted in your mouth like seared foie gras)

Freezing Pineapple Water w/ pineapple, blackberries, blueberries, pomegranite, braised pistachios. (note: served in a bowl in which they poured liquid nitrogen to flash-freeze the fruit)

Chocolate Bread Pudding w/ rasberries, cocoa nib flortentine, candied mint, chocolate sauce

Then I went to bed very very very full and sleepy! Happy New Year!

Appreciate the review. Each time I try to find something better than a Mastro's steak, I find myself woefully disappointed, I'd like to give Donovan's a try, with the expectation that it probably will not be better than my favorite. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

"Horror Show" would be too kind; more like a "cluster*@#!" (read between the lines!) Again, the food had potential and the menu was huge and varied, but beyond concocting an interesting menu and building a pretty space they got just about EVERYTHING else wrong! I too would like to see them make it; it's a good addition to the neighborhood. A lot of problems to fix!

We got a call from them before they closed because we were on their "cassoulet" list and went there each time they made it. They said "come in for your last cassoulet because we're closing for good." I don't think they are planning on re-opening anywhere. It's a real shame because it had a unique flavor that really did remind me of some places in France....that neighborhood-y kind of place that serves great food but is a little unorganized and not-at-all fancy. We really miss Michael, the waiter.

Andreoli's is a winner. I'm also a fan of Casa Mia, not far from you.

A friend of mine and I tried South Beach Restaurant and Lounge last night. It's a new place on Shea, just east of 92nd Street in a new strip mall. I had not heard much about it, except for a short review of their lunch here on Chowhound and I wasn't sure what to make of the somewhat "shotgun" approach menu...sushi, steaks, "florida" cuisine with some Cuban mixed-in.

We arrived at about 8 pm and is was hopping, although there were probably about 10 open tables. It's a big, open space with a hip vibe - reminiscent of a club in South Beach in Miami. The hostess told us it would be about 30 minutes - despite the numerous open tables - and she said she would get us at the bar when our table was ready. So we headed over to the large bar, ordered a couple of beers, and checked out the typical Scottsdale scene of blonde hair, high fashion, and aftermarket augmentation. At least the scene had entertainment value!

After waiting for about 30 minutes, I checked with the hostess to see why it was taking so long depsite all the empty tables. She said the kichen was very backed up so they weren't seating people (not a good sign!) but that she would "check with her boss." She came back moments later and motioned for us to follow her. We were seated where we then continued to wait, and wait, and wait even longer for someone to acknowledge us. The restaurant is owned by two husband/wife couples, and we noticed that one of the owners (female) was sitting with another couple directly next to us and her husband (the other owner) was standing directly next to our table. Despite the fact that we waited about 15 minutes for our server to arrive, the owners never seemed to notice the fact that we were just sitting there with no attention whatsoever.

FINALLY our server arrived...a somewhat clueless fellow with spikey hair who looked like the lead singer of the band Green Day. He seemed very frazzled, didn't greet us at all, and just said "Are you ready to order?" We told him that we'd like to order drinks first and peruse the huge menu. He came back about 10 minutes later with our drinks and we figured that we should at least get our appetizer order in in case he never came back.

We order two appetizers - a Sushi Sampler (priced at $29 so we expected it to be huge) and the Gator Croquettes....who can resist a little alligator every now and then, right? In the meantime no one ever brought us water or bread (which seemed to be at every other tables but ours) and the owners continued to entertain their friends with complete disregard for the downward death-spiral of service that was occuring less than 4 feet from them. I've had better service at Chili's!

Our gator arrived about 20 minutes later and was pretty good. Four large egg-roll shaped items filled with tasty meat and cheese. Not bad. About another 30 minutes passed and we still didn't have our sushi and I was afraid that we'd either 1.) never get it or 2.) get it after our entrees (which we still hadn't ordered because our server was missing-in-action or 3.) get it while we ate our entrees. My friend got up to use the restroom and I said "If our sushi isn't here by the time you get back I'm out of here...." Fortunately, it did arrive and, although the sushi was fresh, the portion size was hardly worthy of $29 and it wasn't anything to rave about. Much better sushi available within a 1 mile radius at Sushi Ko or Hiro.

Moments after our sushi arrived I flagged down our waiter who hadn't been seen in about 45 minutes. He started to take our menus away when I said "Can we order our entrees?" He seemed to have forgotten that he never took our order and my friend and I both ordered the same thing - Arroz con Pollo, priced at $15. As he hurried away I said "Can we get some bread and water" and he acknowledged me with a groan and walked away. The owner then arrived and said "I heard there was a request for bread and water." Umm, yeah dude, you might have noticed that if you were actually running the restaurant instead of gabbing with your friends!

Entrees arrived and were quite good, although the rice was dry. Tasty herb-steamed chicken leg and thigh served in a garlic sauce over rice. At this point, we had been there for nearly two hours and had lost interest. We also ordered another round of drinks which never arrived until we reminded our waiter and, even then, they took 10 minues to get there.

One other item to mention: there was a live band in the bar that was doing their sound check for nearly 90 minutes. We didn't actually hear them play a song until we were walking out the door. Did they really need that much of a sound check? The sound of them saying " check one check two check three" got pretty old. My friend, who works in the entertainment industry and books entertainment for most of the resorts in town, said "don't they realize that they are basically "wallpaper" and people don't really care if they have concert quality sound?" Enough said. When they started sound checking the restaurant was pretty full; by the time they started playing it was mostly empty.

All in all, I'd categorize this as a dining disaster. The restaurant has great design, atmosphere and a huge menu with something to make everyone happy and maybe they are just getting the kinks worked out. But the service was so embarrassingly bad that I can't imagine taking the chance to ever go back. The most frustrating part of all was that the owners - who obviously have a lot of money tied-up in this place - seemed to be far more interested in keeping their friends happy than making sure that the operation was running smoothly.

If things continue as they did last night, I'd give this place 6 months before it's so empty at night that you'll be able to hear the crickets chirping. The Phoenix metro - and Scottsdale, especially - has enough "scene" restaurants that someplace as woefully mediocre as South Beach which has style but not substance is destined to fail.

Maybe the owners just opened it so they would have a place to hang out with their friends, because they sure didn't seem like they cared about anything else.

I've been totally underwhelmed. Was it good....yes. Was it great...hardly. It has been a while since we have been there, but we had lackluster service and so-so food. We never felt the need to go back. It does have quite a following but I feel that there are many better alternatives out there. Maybe it's time to give them another chance before I write it off completely...

For starters, you're staying in a great area and will have a fun trip. Welcome to Scottsdale! The Kierland Commons shopping area is close to your hotel (they have a shuttle there, actually) and has several restaurants: Cheesecake Factory, North (Northern Italian), Greene House (American/Californian), Bobby's (higher end Italian, steaks, seafood), Zinc Bistro (french bistro but not too sophisticated for your child....they also have a great burger and excellent fries) and Ra. (Sushi) Greene House, Zinc, Bobby's and North are all good choices that you and your wife will enjoy and perfectly fine with an 11 year old. (We've taken our 2 year old to all three, regularly) I find that there are very few restaurants here that won't accomodate families and children.

For something "Western" with AZ flavor, Rawhide is a good bet but it has moved out of Scottsdale to the other end of the earth. (Phoenix metro area is HUGE) You might try Pinnacle Peak Patio as an alternative...fun, kitchy, and not a bad cowboy style steak. Families also rave about Rustler's Rooste - about 30 mins from you - but very western and completely family oriented. Another great alternative is Don and Charlies....steaks, chops and great BBQ and one of the best collections of baseball and sport memorabilia west of the Mississippi. Finally, Oregano's is a fun pizza place not too far from your hotel that has good food, fun (loud) family atmosphere....but be prepared to wait for a while and they don't take reservations.

Have a great trip!

Well stated Silverbear. I've lived in Scottsdale for nearly 30 years and I've traveled the world and eaten at some of the "best" restaurants the world has to offer.....including those on both coasts and throughout the world. I'm far less interested in keeping up with the coasts these days and have often felt that some of the places acclaimed as "the best" elsewhere were completely over-inflated and over-hyped. Binkley's is among the best ANYwhere. Call me "unsophisticated" or "geo-centric", but I don't view New York as the cutting edge of cuisine any more and I think people need to get over the notion of the east and west coasts being the cultural and culinary centers of the universe!

Has anyone tried Canal, at the Southbridge project in S. Scottsdale? It had a lot of buzz when it opened - as did the whole development - but I have not heard anything about it from a culinary perspective. Curious as to whether anyone has tried it or if I'm going to have to take one for the Chowhound team and try it first......

I posted somewhere else about this, but I tried it for lunch and had an awful experience. I had the lunch special - shrimp pizza and ceasar salad and the food was mediocre at BEST and the service was nothing short of horrible. I had to promise my first-born in order to get an iced tea refill. Granted, our server had WAY too many tables, but the managers were basically walking around doing nothing and oblivious to the fact that our food was sitting at the kitchen for 10 mins before anyone bothered to bring it to us. I almost got it myself. I can handle poor service when someplace is new and working out the kinks, but I won't try this place again until they put a little bit of effort into the food itself. I agree, however, that it's beautiful inside and has a nice wine-by-the-glass list....but they won't survive on beauty and wine alone!

I tried it for lunch today. Why, based on mediocre reviews, I'm not sure! We each had the lunch special - personal sized pizza and a side (soup or salad) for $7.95. It was mediocre, at best. The ceasar salad was lacking flavor and was basically some romaine lettuce with a very weak dressing, and the pizza (shrimp and serrano chile) had a really funky flavor...and I don't mean funky in a good way! A wood-fire oven is of no use if the stuff you're cooking in it isn't good!

Also, the service was terrible. They seemed very short-staffed and we had to virtually beg for refills on our iced teas and, even then, still had to wait a bit. Our salads sat there for 10 mins before we got them (we had to ask for them to be brought to us), our pizzas came out shortly thereafter, and no one ever bothered to ask how our food was. All in all a so-so experience but what do you really expect for $7.95?
