New site is very confusing and cluttered.

As for the mobile interface, can't see follow up posts on any threads, only the original shows up. Mobile viewing basically dead for me with the new site.

Perhaps less is more....

+1 for Luggage Room and you can stroll across to Stone Company store for a beer tasting or to fill a growler.

Didn't see any Wing Wahs either a week ago at Ranch 99.

Thanks for the recommendations!

So I hit up Garos for some basturma and finall got a hold of the sandwich from Roma market.

First the basturma... Wow great stuff - tastes like a wonderful spiced bresaola looking ham. Terrific.

As for Roma sandwich, wonderful, simple and delicious combination of salami, mortadella, provolone (and a couple of other meats I did not recognize). And what a bargain for $5.50.

I was driving around the area north of Old Town past the 210 and noticed a very eclectic selection of dining options. From soul food, Mexican, Latin American, old school burger joints, etc.

A few places I've frequented include Roma Market/Deli, Super burger, the Hat, Roscoe's chicken and waffle.

Any other noteworthy recommendations in the area? Open to any cuisine and price points.

Costco sells raw prime brisket for $3.99/lb. and here's a price list for a BBQ shack in Texas.

An $8 link does seem pricey...

Anyone tried "Gelato by Naia"? Saw a Ritual Coffee flavored version at Gelson. On the more expensive end at $9.99

Tom Saab Kra is very nice.

Isaan style papaya salad is chock full of delicious funky goodness, closest to what I had in Thailand yet.

Yeah wagyu is not very practical for steaks, too much of a good thing.

Did you try any of the good 'ol American steaks?

Thanks for the reminder on Royce, fell of my radar.

I had the seafood dumpling.

That beef noodle soup was truly atrocious, ended suffering from 3rd degree MSG burns the rest of the evening.

Anyone hit up Alexander's steakhouse in Passdena yet? Looks very very promising.

Ugh, terrible food.

Beef noodle soup was tasteless, MSG laden and terrible noodles. I think they use the nasty yellow stale tasting pancit package noodles you find at Ranch 99. Terrible onion pancake.

Only saving grace was the half decent dumplings.

Rustic canyon? Former Ubuntu chef http://luckypeach.com/fantastic-mr-fox/

Casual so doesn't seem like he's trying too hard but good food. Small plates so he can make a quick exit if things don't go well

Think it's okay on pasta and taco dish. Kinda like Sauternes and desert, crab is a little sweet.

Not so with the salmon and trout dish - peaches and corn pudding sounds like very unappealing combinations to pair with fish. Fishy sweetness....

If you decide to make the trek again in the future for the egg tarts definitely try the taro buns(?). My favorite item at China Red

You're a seasoned veteran in the LA dining scene. I say temper your expectations and just go to Mori next time you are in town. Start with the lower priced omakase and add items if things are working out as your meal progresses

Btw I see you hang out with sku, picked up some amazing bargains on 12 & 17yr hibikis in the past month at my local Costco.

Please don't let some of these discussions scare you for your upcoming visit - I think you'll be perfectly happy with any regular reasonably priced omakase from many of the favorite places on this board. I'd highly recommend Shunji's lunch if you can make it, Mori too. More casual relaxed dining experience and for less $. You're just hearing the views of CHs on the extreme spectrum of super analytical sushi obsessions (in a good way). I've learned a bunch of new things about sushi just on this thread alone. Not dissimilar from obsessive discussions you find in sports, wine, cars, coffee, audio etc forums.

I relish my less food obsessed youthful innocence of dining at restaurants where what you see on the menu is all that is available. Damn you Chowhound and all you hyper competitive food snobs!!!!

I personally think Mori is actually one of the more accessible top tier joints where you get the good stuff without having to prove yourself on the first visit. I've spent considerably less than $160 during lunch visits and walked out grinning. Just make sure you dine at the bar.

It took me about 3 visits at Go's before I started receiving the more elaborate creations.

I tend to not to expect warm glowing service at Asian restaurants in general. Stylistic differences vs western culture. It seems OP's disappointment was primarily service related at arrival and interactions (or lack thereof) during the meal and perception of being shortchanged vs regulars.

Additionally Mori's nigiri has less flourishes of toppings etc, really more of a straightforward traditional hardcore nigiri experience. All about the fish and rice. I recollect not being blown away at Mori during my first visits. However as my sushi palate has become more discerning over the years, I've come to recognize and appreciate the subtle flavors at Mori.

I dined at Bar Nozawa, Shunji and Mori this week and to me Mori's nigiri really does shine above the rest. Perfect neta temperature, firmly constructed rice, never falling apart but still light and airy. I'd steer most toward the former two but for hardcore sushi friends I'd definitely recommend Mori.

It took me ab...

IMHO in descending order

Pecan Lodge
Hutchins
Lockhart smokehouse

The 3 stand head and shoulders above the rest I tried - meshack, slow bone, cousins, salt lick, coopers, Bartley's
