Just want to say thanks for the great discussion here - we've been planning a trip to Lyon and this thread has been very helpful.

One which should not be missed: l'Ambassade d'Auvergne.

L'Ambassade is close to the Pompidou and is literally a culinary embassy for the hospitality and cuisine of the Auvergne region. Meals are very affordable, yet the atmosphere is like you're in another world. Highly recommended: the starter of Salade Tiède de Lentilles Vertes du Puy - it's a warm lentil salad with lardons, mustard, wine vinegar and yummy goose fat . Also any entree with their famed Aligot - mashed potatoes with stringy cheese from the region. The Saucisse de Parlan & Aligot is available year-round I believe.

It's a good thing you asked the question - I was going to also mention Le Pamphlet but in looking for a link to their menu I discovered it closed. :(

We're taking a break from Paris and will be spending our vacation this year in Lyon. While we're looking forward to all the gastronomic possibilities, I have come to depend on our trips to G. Detou in Paris for exotic varieties of black pepper, Piment d'Esplette, Tarbais beans, chocolate pastilles, etc.

I'm sure there are loads of gourmet shops in Lyon, but we're looking for the no-frills, best quality / best value that G. Detou offers in Paris. Can anyone recommend une bonne address?

The Eden Center tip is much appreciated. Used to be Arlington was the key spot back 20 yrs ago. Little Serow will be close to where we're staying, again looks like a great tip.

Woodleyparkhound - we will be staying in the Woodley Park area. Have you tried Mama Ayesha's for Lebanese - 1967 Calvert St. NW?

Great list - thanks for compiling.

I took a look at the menu at Me Jana and it looks like there isn't any kibbe? Is that correct?

Former NW residents (20 yrs ago) looking for excellent ethnic eats that we can't get in Seattle. First & foremost is Lebanese; recommendations for other ethnic eats (Vietnamese, Soul Food, etc.) are also most welcome.

We're also looking for a good recommendation for an acclaimed chef, focus on the food and preferably avoiding hipster-trendy-noisy-flavor-of-the-month places.

We'll have a car, so all options are (for now) on the table.

I'm a Seattle-area CH-er hoping to find my favorite brand of Garam Masala in the Greater Vancouver area.

Does anyone know of an Indian grocery which definitely carries the TRS brand?

Many thanks in advance!

Tilth. Nationally recognized chef, outstanding food, consistent quality. Hard wooden chairs.

The fresh hummus at sold Goodies Market on Lake City Way is the best I've had in this area.

I have to disagree. I have no problem being assertive in restaurants, including Jade Garden, but Jade's service is crap. The cart people have no social skills whatsoever, service to them is pushing a cart and punching a clock. The host staff are abysmally obtuse when it comes to keeping a queue, and don't give me any of that "different culture" nonsense. The staff at Harbor City are not any less Chinese, but they are customer oriented and understand that treating people well means they will want to return.

I totally agree. Zagat has built themselves into the 800-lb gorilla of food review books and paid content on the basis of the cache the Zagat name has previously brought to restaurants who win the approval of its reviewers. Along the way they've become quite arrogant about their so-called superior methodology and the weight they carry in the restaurant world.

So I say yes, bash Zagat for the way they carry themselves in public, for the brand puffery, and now for whoring themselves to fast food chains.

If I were a Zagat fan, I would be affronted at the thought of the Zagat logo on a bucket of KFC's finest. That's not elitist, that's taking a stand against all the crap fast food restarants do, as mentioned in books like Fast Food Nation and The Omnivore's Dilemma. And isn't that the point of premium review sources - to stand out above McDonald's, KFC, etc.?

I'm sure this is all a boon to KFC and their ilk. For readers of Zagat guides, they have to wonder even more about the quality of the survey participants. You can't have it both ways, Zagat.

Harbor City's XLB are pretty darn good - good dough, great filling & seasoning, execution is usually reliable if they're not slammed.

Sometimes we have to wait for them; other times we go late(1:30pm) and they're not making them any more. But xiao long bao are usually there, and I recommend asking when you are first seated - the cart ladies will put the word out in the kitchen.

BTW, skip going to their sister restaurant in Redmond, Preet's, for sweets. They get 'em from Kent, but they're never as fresh or easy to deal with.

There's just one place in the entire Seattle metro area that I would recommend: Punjab Sweets in Kent.

For starters, they make their own sweets; most do not. They have an excellent selection of burfi, gulab jamun, snack mixes, etc. Fresh jalebi usually on Fridays & Saturdays. They also have a decent menu of vegetarian food. IMHO they're better than anything I've found in Vancouver, and rival sweets I've had in Southall.

We first found Lunchbox Laboratory a great experience in how far you could push flavor, but the execution is sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. And even for Seattle, the place feels just a little too dirty for my tastes.

I don't know where you're coming from, but there are some very good Ethiopian restaurants in town. I can recommend Ras Dashen, Saba, and Altaye.

Harbor City - they don't have the world's largest variety, but what they do they generally do well. Word has been getting out over the last 12 months or so; best to go before or after the rush.

Off of dim sum hours, I highly recommend their moo shu duck.

Good tip! They can get it. Good news: just $5.99 / lb. The bad news: have to order 10 lbs.

Anyone want to start a buying club?

I just had the same thought. The Swinery can get goose fat from one of their suppliers - price around $12 / lb. Pretty good compared with Schaller & Weber in NYC, even before you add in 2-day FedEx. They tend to buy good quality stuff, so even better.

Thanks, but I have some fresh now - appreciate the offer.

Now, if I can only lock down a regular source that doesn't cost an arm & a leg....

I have had no trouble getting fatback from the Viet Hoa supermarket in the ID, they should have leaf lard, as these folks believe in using "the whole buffalo."

For quality, definitely the Swinery; Don and Joes is very likely but recommend calling first.

Go only if you don't mind a cacophony of sound bombarding you while dining - day or night. Honestly, they think they're running a Belltown nightclub in there.

I decided to order from Schaller & Weber and received a beautifully-packed container via FedEx 2-day. NOTE: shipping was $35. Ouch! I definitely need to find a local source...

I like this idea. You should see my other post about findings restaurants in SEA with trained waitstaff.

Sorry for not seeing this one sooner.
