We've been several times. Lots of love for this place from me! Definitely get a reservation. We think it's great. When you walk in, the decor makes you think you've landed a 70s strip mall red sauce joint, but the food is anything but. The first time I went I got the steak and it wasn't great, but I'm so glad I went back because I haven't had anything worth complaining about since. The fish special was outstanding. You have to order a side, but the pricing is totally fair. The little antipasti are delicious. Some people might not be happy about the portion sizes, but frankly, I'd much rather have a delicious few bites of food than a big pile of blah. Their homemade pastas are delicious. I hope it does well and stays around for a long, long time. Maybe paying North Durham rents will help make that a reality because it's a pretty small place.

We were just in Sparta and if you're ever back in Sparta looking for a quick bite rather than a dining experience check out the Mexican place at the far left of the Lowe's Food strip mall. It's called Mexicana something-or-other. It was started by Mexicans for the Mexican Christmas tree workers in the area but is now owned and operated by a Spanish guy using the same recipes. Anyway, the fresh salsa was excellent and we enjoyed the tacos. The tacos pastor were especially good. They have beer and pool tables in the back.

Their bread was definitely the low point. The only other thing - while I liked the calamari/slaw - there wasn't that much calamari going on, but their tomato special was hugely delicious.

Yikes! The wine went up AGAIN? It used to be $4 - which was amazing, then $5, still great. $6? Just ok. It's the same owners, lot of the same menu items. I think it's a fun place to go on drink special night because they're hopping and the food is fine. LulusMom, if you're ever looking for a place to go when the other places are closed, consider Acme. We were there last night and it was great.

Rumor has it that the owners had gone back to Afghanistan for a while and had left it in the hands of their daughter who turned it into a bar. When they returned and found what had happened, they were horrified and consequently, no alcohol. We like this place, too. I forgot exactly what it was, but we had an amazing appetizer there the first time we went. I'd have to look at the menu again.

Bread and Kabob also has Hookahs outside, so I'm sure they're open late. No alcohol, though.

The odd thing is that the descriptions and prices at GHF are not very small-platey, but the sizes of the plates are the same.

Thank you so much. Have never been to Saltwater Creek. Should check it out. We've had great food at bistro 217 and chive blossom in the past. Glad to hear they've still got game.

Excited about heading to the beach for the holidays. I would love to hear about any updates on the food scene in Litchfield/Pawley's? What are your favorite places?

Not much time to go into a long review this morning, but we went last night and I'm with klaatu on this one. Please go and try this place. It's in a nice, comfortable space. Tuesday night is $5 mojito/$5 appetizer night and I have to say, both were excellent. My main dish (free-range pollo) was very good, but by the time I had indulged in all the appetizers we ordered, I had to take some of it home. I love apps and these were especially good: stuffed plantains, mussels with chorizo, and the croquettas. We also tried the salad with avocado - yummy! I'll be going back... a lot! Cute little bar, by the way.

Intrigued by the peas, prosciutto and onions in mini tart shells. Do you have a recipe (or guideline) for that one handy? Thought about gougeres but the mini-souffles seemed too similar (eggs/gruyere). Next time though.

I'm now regretting not buying that big container of macadamia nuts at Costco the other day...

I was thinking of melon balls....have you ever macerated them in vodka and a touch simple syrup?

Interesting. How do you make these? Do you hollow them out and fill it with small chopped bits?

Wow. So many amazing ideas. Thank you. Better than I had expected, especially since several of the ideas are easy and I tend to follow the plan: make a couple of things and buy the rest. Would like to a have a recipe for some of the others.

So I'm having a little drinks & nosh get together tomorrow evening and am making a couple of things tonight - one is little meatballs and the other some mini-souffles made in mini muffin tins. I had planned on buying party tomatoes....I realized that so far everything is round so I thought maybe I'd just make it a theme and stick to round food. Any ideas?!

Thanks. Perfect. I love hole in the wall places. Sugar cake sounds good - not so sure about the sparkling scuppernog... : )

Our son is starting at UNCSA this week and we'll be heading there quite a bit. Are there any fun/interesting places to check out nearby?

I think another problem with the Fish Shack was the feng shui/vibe along with the fact that it didn't offer immediate gratification the same way the Qshack does. The way they remodeled that place after Rockwood was weird. I walked in one day and turned right around and walked back out. If they serve alcohol they'll have that over the other taquerias.

Just got back on Friday and brought almost nothing back with us except the rest of the butter that was in the fridge. Most delicious butter ever. Luckily, it was a big chunk.

There are many better restaurants in Charleston than 82 Queen. Sue in Mt. P mentions several. My last meal in Charleston was the shrimp & grits at SNOB for lunch. They were delicious. This time of year you're going to have to get ready to stand in line at restos in Murrell's Inlet. Our favorite there is Russell's. It's old school Southern seafood and has a great atmosphere. We call it the tree house. You could go just a little further down 17 to Litchfield Beach/Pawley's and maybe get reservations at Chive Blossom or Bistro 217. Both are excellent. Great seafood cooked in a more modern style.

Loved the crunchy onions. But I thought the sweet congeal-y mustard was kind of icky.

omg - the hot dogs in Reykjavik with crunchy onions! The best. If only they had good mustard.
