Cottage Place and Josephine's are both excellent. Mountain Oasis is a quirky place for lunch. And if you like Indian food, Delhi Palace is outstanding; just DON'T save your Indian food fix for Sedona, because the Indian place there pales by comparison.

As someone who visits both towns (I live in Prescott), I can vouch for chowworthy places in each. But because Flag is larger and caters to a broader base of restaurant-goers, I think it offers more choices -- many as highly regarded as Sedona eateries.

I wouldn't let restaurant options influence where you stay, either way you'll win. Go with whichever town is the better base of operations for your visit and I suspect you'll be pleased by the food.

Pita Jungle is a Phoenix-based chain. Healthy and delicious. There's bound to be one near wherever you're staying.

Beefeaters is my regular and I found little difference (or at least not enough to quibble). Definitely closer to that than to Tanqueray or Bombay Sapphire.

Just risked 20 bucks to try Costco's new "Kirkland Signature London Dry Gin" and I wasn't disappointed. Noticeable citrus overtones but stood up nicely to olives & brine. I usually drink Beefeaters but this will do nicely.

I also try to hold back on the carbs, which has knocked out a lot of pasta dishes from my repertoire, and have found spaghetti squash to be a satisfying substitute in many cases. Aside from merely dousing it with sauce, here's a recipe I particularly like:

I substitute half a package of quorn chik'n tenders for the chicken. I also use a lot more spinach, usually a 5 oz bag. Looks complicated, but if you get your chopped stuff ready while you nuke the squash, it goes together in a jiffy.

We often have a friend over for dinner who's not vegetarian but likes to avoid carbs, and she absolutely loves this dish, quorn and all.

And re carb avoidance in general, I also use a lot of quinoa where I used to use rice.

Trader Joe's has a version that's more reasonable, $3.69 for 4. They include black beans, but they're not vegan (egg white) or gluten-free (bread crumbs). Pretty tasty, though.

I would have to say it's my favorite restaurant in Prescott and the place I'd most likely take visitors.

If you're going thru Cottonwood then you're not far from Prescott, where El Gato Azul offers an eclectic menu you won't find elsewhere.

Quinoa has definitely become my go-to grain substitute, and its ease of cooking has proved pretty foolproof for the years I've been using it. I bring water to a boil, simmer it for 12 minutes, and let it sit until all the water's absorbed. But whenever I attempt to cook it in stock, it never cooks! After 12 or even 15 minutes, there's just a pan full of glop with no indication that the quinoa intends to absorb the liquid at all.

I've never seen any variations in recipes that call for any difference in cooking when using stock, and considering the number that suggest using it, I'd like to think this might be anticipated. Has anybody else encountered this problem? (By the way, I live above 5,000 feet, if elevation might have anything to do with it.)

Unconscionable? I recently bought a bag of asparagus and opened it for that night's dinner only to discover half the tips were slimy. I salvaged enough to use but was pretty miffed so took it back the next day. When I presented it at the returns counter, I began to explain "I just bought this yesterday..." and the clerk completed my sentence with "and it was funky." So I got my refund and learned never to buy bagged asparagus.

I've also taken back an opened 1.5L bottle of wine, which we determined after 1 glass to be undrinkable (and we drink a lot of cheap wine!). Costco will take anything back (including unopened excess Halloween candy, so OP's question is a no-brainer).

Whenever I had visitors and wasn't sure how they'd take to Mexican food, I usually took them to the Double L on S. 4th. Haven't been there in ages, but their menu always had a few safe gringo items.

Have never eaten at McDonald's, even before I became a vegetarian. Am now 65 years old and consider it a point of pride.

This may really be scraping the bottom of the cheese barrel, but I'm a big fan of Kroger's pepper jack. I'll occasionally buy TJ's and don't like it half as well.

Do the meatless balls have a different flavor than the regular Quorn ground beef substitute? I find that totally unacceptable for chili and the like since I find the taste too similar to Quorn's chicken substitute (which I'm a big fan of) and inappropriate for a beef stand-in.

Coastal Cheddar from England.
It's been at Costco, but I haven't bought it in a while so can't swear that they still carry it.

I lived in Tucson for close to 30 years before moving to Prescott 6 years ago, so I was around when Zemam's opened but never ate there. We recently took a trip down with a friend who was excited about the prospect of eating Ethiopian food -- and I have to say I'm sorry I waited so long. We ate at the Broadway location and it was fantastic. Were the first ones there right after it opened on a Sunday, but by the time we left it was packed. Will now have a new dining priority (other than Sonoran Mexican) when we go to Tucson.

A fall/winter rather than a holiday item but one I use all year: spaghetti squash. At $2.29 each, it's so much cheaper for a 5-lb monster at TJ's than paying $1.29/lb at the supermarket.

Also the pumpkin ice cream & cheesecake. The ice cream is almost too rich, but I like to cut it with vanilla. I had bought a cheesecake for a holiday meal, then our guests showed up with dessert and I left it in the freezer. Finally had some a couple of days ago and knew I'd be socking a few away next year!

I wouldn't ordinarily recommend the cafeteria-style setup at Maswik Lodge, but with a variety of food stations it may be your best bet for kids. The food *is* mediocre, but you won't be paying for any more than that.

In Flag, try Pita Jungle, an Arizona chain, on Butler Ave. Eclectic menu, and I always see a lot of kids there, so their parents must know it's appealing.

I've wondered about their vanilla ice cream, which I find very similar to TJ's in richness except one is bean and the other French (and both rbgh-free), so I'm wondering if they're both made by the same provider who just tweaks the recipe. (Old web info said TJ's was made by Double Rainbow, which may no longer be true.) I tend to buy TJ's since having to get 2 half-gallons at Costco is too much of a threat to my waistline just having that much around, but they're both excellent -- much better than Haagen Dazs, IMO.

Yeah, most Costco's in the valley have it, so next time I'm down the hill I'm bringing back a case, for sure.

I've been a Beefeater guy for the past 20 years. (And yes, I do get a lot of comments parading around in that outfit....) Goes great either with tonic or in a martini (I likes 'em dirty and not too dry).

Don't know what to say. When I was in my 20s I loved it and thought T&T didn't even need a lime; now I'm a 60-something curmudgeon and can't figure out what it was that once turned me on about it. I guess it's not impossible that they tinkered with the recipe over all those years, but it's more likely a change in my taste buds.

I mean, seriously folks.... Eight, count 'em, 8 brands of vodka, but my smallish Costco (Prescott, AZ) is down to 2 brands of gin. They've discontinued Beefeater and I'm stuck with Tanqueray (tasteless, IMO, could just as well count as another vodka) or Bombay Sapphire (overpriced and overly floral). The manager told me that the buyer in San Diego determined that Beefeater wasn't selling enough, so they yanked it here even though they still sell it in other stores.

Not looking for solutions -- I just needed to vent.

Brown a package of Quorn tenders in a skillet, add a can of Amy's semi-condensed mushroom soup, serve over jasmine rice. Does the trick whenever I'm sick.

This has become my holiday-meal fallback:

Saute some onion and fresh rosemary in olive oil; cube a [peeled & seeded] butternut squash and add to pan; pour in about 2 cups veggie broth and simmer until squash is tender; stir in a bunch of chopped kale until tender; add some cooked lentils, then some feta.

Great side dish, but substantial enough to satisfy non-carnivores.

If so, can you recommend a similar place in lower Delco to take my elderly mother for her birthday when I visit her in a couple of weeks? If you remember the Inglenook, you’ll know the formula: Reliable, unpretentious, non-threatening American food. Charming ambience. Sedate. No booze (not a requirement, but it helped set the tone). Lots of old people and families. No guys wearing caps. Boringboringboring ... but nice.

Will resort to the Concordville Inn or Towne House if necessary, but just wondered if there’s someplace I don’t know about or have failed to recall.
