Count me in, possibly with my wife and 2 kids (they enjoyed it last time!) Will let you know whether they're coming or not, soon, Joon.

Okay, two more...

There's a new "Bubbakoo's Burritos" which opened up next to King's Chinese restaurant in Manalapan (across from Tokyo Sushi Buffet - same parking lot). Have not tried yet, but I've heard of them.

In Marlboro, on Union Hill Rd., there was a place called "Bagel Time".. It closed at least 2 years ago (and perhaps longer) and has been vacant ever since. I took my daughter for a slice at Carlo's Pizza a few days ago (same strip mall), and noticed some activity in the bagel place. Yeah, major construction going on inside. Of course, I had to ask. Didn't get any details, but it's going to be an Indian restaurant.

Hey, that's cool, but is Indian the new Italian these days? They're popping up everywhere.

I'd love a buffet, since Masala Kitchen up Rt. 9 by about a mile feels justified charging $12.95 for theirs, and I just won't pay that much.

We passed by earlier tonight.. and my wife exclaimed, "Did you see that line!?"

I didn't see the line, as I was driving. But apparently still a line out the door 3 weeks later.

Yup. We ate at Moe's tonight in Marlboro, there was an empty storefront next door with a "For Rent" sign in the window.. then I remembered what was there previously... yet another fro-yo place. (The one that used to be in the Shoppes of Old Bridge, Crave, that's gone, too).

I can't figure out how Let's Yo is still in business in Marlboro (Union Hill Rd). The last time we went in there, 4 cups of yogurt came to... $27!! Holy ripoff, Batman!

Can't STAND these business models that charge by the ounce.. and for the fro-yo places, they all do. I think that's why so many fail.

There's a buffet near me (Tokyo Sushi buffet in Freehold), that lets you take-out the buffet, and they charge by the pound. I can get quite a bit of sushi for $6 or $7. It's not the best, but a heck of a lot better than what you'll find in the grocery store, even if they do make it fresh.

That's what I meant to say.. thank you for clarifying.

I'm pretty sure that's what happened, though the official mall website still lists Tilted Kilt, and there's no mention of Ruby Tuesday, which is (was?) also there.

There's no mention of that location on Ruby Tuesday's website.. nor is there mention of Red Robin on RR's website.

OK, I THINK I see what's going on here. Ruby Tuesday is out. Red Robin is working on replacing them in that spot. Tilted Kilt is still in business.

Completely random here...

My wife noticed as we were heading southbound on Rt. 18.. Tilted Kilt is gone (never did go), and has been replaced by Red Robin, which is a pretty good chain. I've had all positive experiences at the ones I've been to.

Heading northbound on 18, all of a sudden, BAM! There's a new Taco Bell near the Colonial DIner. When did that happen?

And speaking of Mexican, Happy Cinco de Mayo!

No, wait, that's not what I really meant to say, but I'll let it stand...

And speaking of Mexican, whilst driving through Englishtown, I saw a new place, "Mayte's Cafe", serving tacos, burritos, tortas, etc., and they sell groceries, too!

No website, but they have a Facebook presence, complete with menus:

https://www.facebook.com/MaytesCafe/

I've been meaning to hit that area with a metal detector.. guess I'd better hurry up!

Would love to see a Cracker Barrel in Freehold. My firstborn's first restaurant was a Cracker Barrel (in Shrewsbury, MA). My second daughter's first restaurant was also a Cracker Barrel.. in Jacksonville, Florida. We didn't plan it like that, it just turned out that way.

So yes, we like the food, and CB holds a special place in our hearts. :)

What goes around, comes around.

"Sweet Shack" lasted two seasons. It was always open, but never busy.

I heard through the grapevine that the rent the owner charges for that location is astronomical.. "Four Boys" wanted to have a location there but the rent was too high.

Anyway, the signs have changed.. after a 4 year hiatus, it's going to be Ralph's Italian Ice again.

The new one in Marlboro is now open with a large "Grand Opening" sign out front.

And catercorner from where "Jay's Shoe Box" used to be is now going to be "Big Mike's Pizza"

www.bigmikespizza.biz

Because you all know we need another pizza place around here! <eyeroll>

Seal,

Yes, you can. A free burger with ANY purchase.

I know because I called about the April 18th free burger day, and I spoke with the manager. He said the day had been moved to the 27th, but he would still honor the 18th. That's super nice. Unfortunately, my wife thought it was too far to drive for dinner on a weeknight.

Maybe I will see you on Wednesday. :)

MarlboroMan commented 6 years ago

I'm guessing so, since "Heavenly" is now listed as CLOSED on Yelp.

Also, from a Yelp review, I gleaned this:

All ingredients are organic and local! Brian, the owner, is planning a free burger day on April 18th!

Sure, if you believe the fallacy that saturated fat leads to clogged arteries, be my guest. "Placebo effect"

It's okay, I ate lots of "healthier" margarine in the 70's before I realized the truth. Wouldn't touch anything but butter now.

Well, they lasted 8 years.. a pretty good run!

I was near there last week and saw a dumpster outside.. looks like extensive renovations were being done. No idea what the next (re)incarnation will be.

MarlboroMan commented 6 years ago

I believe you're right. The photos I looked at look the same, and Yelp reports it as closed.

Saw this sign 3 stores down from Cafe 360. I can't remember what restaurant was there before, but there is a sign there now.. hard to miss:

Coming Soon - Aarzu - Modern Indian Bistro

So this will make.. what? 3 Indian places in Freehold now?

P.S. At least it's not Italian... and.. anyone remember what the previous restaurant was?

Okay, I tried the fresh market self-serve last night.. I think this will be my go to spot for a while. Fantastic yellow rice with veggies and shrimp, pernil, beef stew (and the meat was super tender!), yucca (which was dried out, unfortunately), fried tilapia, and all sorts of other choices. Pernil was fantastic. Everything seasoned well. $4.99 a pound, can't beat it. My whole meal came to less than $7.00.

This spot is great because... great food, cheap, easy to park, self-serve.. so I'm in and out, fast.

The Peruvian place must be getting close to opening. The "LIttle Greek" sign has been replaced by a very noticeable bright yellow and red sign reading "Asu Mare" Peruvian Restaurant. In 2013 there was a Peruvian movie by the same name (along with the accompanying preceding inverted exclamation point), so it's probably a homage to that movie.

I remember having awesome saba when I lived in Boston. Down here in NJ, it all tastes like pickled herring. But when done right, yes, it's in my top 5.

Was there a disclaimer posted anywhere stating that they did not accept those coupons? If not, I would complain to BBB, at least.

This was one of the better Italian/pizza joints in the area, I thought. Well, I got an email that after 10 years, they are calling it quits. They didn't say why, but hinted at a "return to normal life." Restaurant was located on Rt. 520 in the Wawa strip plaza.

It was great. We ended up split into two tables, and ordered multiple dishes. I got to try tongue for the first time in my life (I liked it!). I also suggested potatoes in vinegar sauce, and that was well-received.

I got to meet a few new faces to go with the screen names, AND we got free sauerkraut and mustard to boot! :)

I agree with you on this.

When I lived in Boston (this is over 10 years ago), I frequented a number of sushi joints. Nearly all of them had specials boards, and I'm not talking about the funky roll of the day.. I'm talking about sushi and sashimi.. fish I've NEVER seen or heard about down here. I've had fugu, shirako, various preparations of live seafood (shrimp, lobster - (yes, I ate a live lobster while it was looking at me.. creepy, but delicious), scallop, etc.), abalone, various clams, spanish mackerel, horse mackerel, monkfish liver, REAL wasabi (the actual plant, not the reconstituted powder!), ama ebi, bonito, shiso leaf, and I could go on and on but I think I might cry soon.

Down here in NJ, it's a completely different ballgame. It's all so.. generic, as you said. The emphasis seems to be on rolls, most of which I couldn't care less about. I am NOT going to spend $15-20 on a single roll, I don't care what's in it.

The best spicy tuna roll I've ever had was in Boston. The best yellowtail? It was more like hamachi toro.. and I had it in Boston.. well, Revere, to be exact. Try finding a live lobster special down here. (First they prepared the tail.. chopped it up, and served it while the lobster was still alive.. then they took the lobster back to the kitchen and made soup with it).

Granted, I haven't been to some of the "better" places around here. I've heard good, and bad things about Shumi in Somerville, but I've never been. I've been to Kazu once, and I just wasn't impressed at all. Maybe Kazu is great, but compared to what Boston has to offer, it seriously pales in comparison, as does everything else around here.

So when I do eat sushi, screw it, I just eat it on the cheap in mass quantities. Why pay $$$$ when I can get the same offerings for $$? (or even $!) I load up on the sashimi (which is actually very good), have a few pieces of rolls, and whatever else interests me, and I end up paying the equivalent of one of those overpriced, funky rolls with silly names, you know, something like... "The Jack Terrier" - Whitefish with avocado on the outside, spicy crab and tobiko on the inside, served with chef's special sauce and crunchy. (I made that one up, of course, but they all follow a similar protocol).

I agree with you on this.

Stopped by this place.. I was in the area. Closed on a Friday night! Turns out they are not even open for business yet!

Why put out a full menu/2 page spread in a local coupon magazine if you're not yet open for business?

Perhaps they ran into problems and THOUGHT they'd be open by now...

OR, they have no idea what they're doing.

Reminds me of the restaurant near me that still remains shuttered, on Rt. 9 South.. the one that used to be Pet Paradise long ago, with the fancy sarcophagi on the exterior. This summer they were putting in plants.. and they've still never opened.

I've never opened a restaurant.. but it would seem logical to me to get the restaurant open FIRST, and then work on the finer details.

As I understand, so far we have a party of 9. Of those, I know of at least 3 (my wife and daughters) who will be ordering "standard American Chinese" fare.

The other 6 of us are the open minded ones. :) (Lucky for me, my wife does not follow this website!)

OK, I work in Freehold Friday through Sunday nights, now, delivering pizza. There's lots of little hole in the wall restaurants around, and I'm wondering which ones are best, cheapest, etc. Someplace where I can pop in, order a few things to go, and be out in 5 minutes, for less than $10.

One place I have found that's really great (and super CHEAP) is the Freehold Fresh Market (formerly Foodtown on Park Ave.) http://freeholdfreshmarket.com/ which has a take away food bar featuring all sorts of hispanic foods like roast pork, tamales, rice, shrimp, etc., and is ONLY $4.95 per pound. Heck, you can't buy OLIVES at Wegman's for less than $9.99 a pound now, so this is a great deal!

So far I've only had 2 beef empanadas.. they were very good and only $1.25 each.. I need to get over there before they're cleaning up and closing down for the night.

But I'm wondering about other places. There's one I see a lot.. Conchita's and Romeo's Mexican Take-Out, on South Street.. wondering how that is.

Any tips, Chowhounders? I tend to trust you guys (and gals) more than whiny Yelpers. :)

Found out about this place tonight from one of those coupon magazines. 130 S. Main Street in Marlboro, this is where the 7-11 and Indian grocery stores are. Grand opening special, most sushi 50% off (with the exception of a few rolls, uni, and salmon roe), and hibachi is 30% off.

I guess this place will give Koo a little competition.. no idea how long the 50% off deal is good for.

My wife was so excited, she thought she had a new piece of "foodie" news for me, but I already knew about the BWW. She did say the same as you, it'll be where the former "Diamond Castle" or whatever it was, is.

I see they've begun work inside, but it doesn't seem big enough for a restaurant of that size. Of course, I've never actually been inside that particular store, so, who knows?

I've only been to a BWW once, the one in Eatontown. All I remember was how loud it was, too loud, and there pretty much wasn't a place to sit that wasn't within viewing distance of a TV.

I don't remember anything about the food. I know I had wings. I can't remember if I enjoyed them or not. :)

Hey Curlz,

Definitely in, and looking forward to it! 4 seats, actually. Wife expressed desire to come, we're bringing the kids, who are generally well-behaved, and they both sit in regular chairs. Hope that's okay.

So, how many are confirmed, now?

I'd like to freak out my wife by ordering the stir-fried intestines. :)

I found this quite by accident, from the blog theerichammer.com. Apparently the chain BWW is coming to Marlboro/Manalapan, although exactly where isn't mentioned. I'm guessing as part of the warehouse facility that was recently sold (with included liquor license).
