Sorry I can't help, but if you don't mind expanding your 10 mile range, highly recommend The Laundry in Fenton (7 days/week) and The Union in Clarkston (Sunday only).
Gotta believe there is a good place up in Davison or Grand Blanc.

I definitely second the Laundry.
I'll add that they have a really great cocktail program.
Just went there Thursday.
Went there for brunch, and actually spent close to 5 hours relaxing at the bar.

I has the same experience a year or so ago. Really sad experience. This news is absolutely not surprising.

Ferndale is in a smaller, older space. It is close to a pretty cool market (http://www.rustbeltmarket.com/) that you could visit before or after or if there is a wait.

Birmingham is in a bigger, newer, fresher, space. Also has outdoor seating, and may be possible to make a reservation (probably not on a Sunday). Birmingham is a very upscale city, and the toast location reflects that.
There is upscale shopping that you could take in within walking distance if there is a wait. Although i usually just order a bloody mary or cocktail and wait at the small bar.

If you make it to Michigan for Brunch, I would consider Toast as an option.
They have locations in Ferndale and Birmingham - and the decor/crowd is quite different between the two- I enjoy both.
The Fly Trap is another option in Ferndale.
There are many places doing good brunch in Detroit, but I don't make it down very often.
I can't think of any must stops near Meadowbrook, though there are plenty of places nearby. Here are a few ...
I might hit Slows in Pontiac or the Woodshop in Clarkston before the concert if BBQ interests you. Slows is probably 15-20 minutes from Meadowbrook, Woodshop 20-25 minutes.
Rochester Tap Room offers a nice burger and a large craft beer selection if you're into that. 10-20 minutes from Meadowbrook depending on traffic.
If you really like Symon, I believe he has a burger place within walking distance of Meadowbrook (along with upscale shopping in the Village of Rochester Hills). I haven't been, but my gf enjoyed it. B Spot Burgers.
Same complex has a Mitchell's which is known for good but relatively expensive fresh seafood - I enjoy Mitchell's.
There is also an Italian place in The Village called Bravo. Decent place, again, relatively expensive.
Could also hit Whole Foods and make a picnic for the concert.
Downtown Rochester has plenty of options as well.

Here are a couple of pictures of my doner kabob that I had for lunch Tuesday in a small town outside Frankfurt.
This little place served two styles -
"open" like shown in pix
and
"wrapped" like a roll-up
I like them both ways.
Very tasty

Thanks for comparison. Bucharest chicken shawarma's have a LOT of chicken - they definitely are filling.

FWIW, I think many many food trucks are overpriced. I guess maybe they are charging for convenience.

I will be having a German donor in a couple weeks, will try to post a pic

Can't believe you at least didn't try it. I mean it's $9.
How did they compare size wise to a shawarma from Buch btw?

Has it been oven cured/sealed, or whatever? Not even sure if I am using the correct terminology.

I am pretty sure Shangri-La Midtown made a group of Chowhounders Xao Long Bao 5-6 years ago.
But it is not on their dim sum menu as far as I can tell (small pork dumplings is close, but the Chinese characters don't look exactly right). But call ahead and ask for it.
They also made some AMAZING chive dumplings.

Higher end
Mabel Grey, Grey Ghost (really hot right now, awesome cocktails, not cheap), Chartreuse is another place with good cocktails/food

Lower end
Bucharest Grill for a chicken shawarma - this is <$10 (this would be Detroit's version of where is the best cheesesteak in Philly, just sub shawarma for cheesesteak)

I have enjoyed cocktails and tapas at San Chez.

And pizza here:

Rainsux rec is solid as well.

Fry them in batches and sauce them the day before. Pop in oven for 15-20 minutes before serving/

There is a Bigalora in DTW now, and their pizza is better than Detroit style anyway (imo), if you just want pizza.

m
Markcron commented 5 years ago

Haha. I was about to mention this, as my son and I just finished 2 King gyros from Graceland.
Must mention this is takeout, though there is a picnic table around back.

In Glen Arbor, if you just want a burger, I am a fan of Art's Tavern.

North of Detroit - where?

For breakfast/brunch, I like Toast in either B'ham or Ferndale. Or if it is Sunday, the Union in Clarkston has a good breakfast.

The Laundry in Fenton has good breakfast and lunch (sandwiches are large). Bloody mary's are really spicy.

The Woodshop in Clarkston has really good BBQ - rubs, brisket, pulled pork. Slows in Detroit is also very good.

The Shawarma at Bucharest Grill is something that should not be missed in Detroit.

This is just a few ideas.

Capital Grille at Somerset (25 miles from downtown) has a great room that can handle 12 (or more).
The Stoli Doli is a great drink as well.
You will be happy that work is paying (if they are)!

Giovanni's is an awesome choice as well.

Mastro's is pricey, but if you like lemon martini's, their's is pretty awesome.

You can have more great drinks and be loud at Citizen's Public House. They have a signature chopped salad which is really good as well.

If you want something Latin, look at The Mission. You can definitely be loud here as well, and the gaucamole is excellent.

I am only in Scottsdale for a week a year, but the all of the above would work for bachelorette party (CPH probably my #1 rec). Hope some other rec's are coming, but this section is pretty dead.

Any thoughts on this place?
My gf used to frequent this place as a grad student 20+ years ago.
We are planning to try it out on a visit soon.
They have some kind of pizza made in/on a tea/coffee cup
