Good news! (When I replied earlier, I hadn't been to a Thursday at Canalside concert yet this season.) There are plenty of food trucks parked within the concert venue during the Thursday night events, if food trucks are your thing. I like the variety.

Mmmm. Weck rolls. My sisters, who live in the southern part of the U.S., love melted cheese in a weck roll. I like Rocco's, though I've only been once. I had a pizza with arugula and shaved Parmesan. And too many espresso martinis. (It was my birthday.) It's pretty classy inside but you don't need to dress up. Mulberry is always a good bet. Have you been to Brick Oven Bistro and Deli on Abbott Road in South Buffalo? There is no deli, but I'm wild about the pizza. Brick Oven has an impressive beer selection, too. The owners of Mulberry and Brick Oven have opened a place called the Mess Hall in Lackawanna.

For good Italian food, I recommend Vino's on Elmwood Ave.

Weber's mustard. http://webersmustard.com/products.asp

You can find Weber's products at Wegmans and Tops.

In the lat 1980s, every trip to Toronto necessitated a stop at Tops in East Aurora, NY, for SmartFood, the popcorn snack. A certain Mlle Bousquet of Spadina Ave. demanded it.

While I've only been once, I thought the food at El Ranchito, located on Main St. in Clarence, NY, was fine. El Ranchito had more vegetarian meal options than most local Mexican spots. My friends love it. The menu is large and vast.

Here's a link to a Buffalo News article about El Ranchito:

I trust the News' reviewer Andrew Galarneau's opinions, and he recently wrote about another area Mexican spot, El Agave in Cheektowaga: http://buffalo.com/2015/06/18/feature...

Skip the lines and go to Roux, located on the fifth floor of the Buffalo News and open to the public. Call ahead to make sure they'll be open the evening of your visit. They are open for breakfast and lunch, M-F. It's manned by a co-owner of Liberty Hound and has expansive views from its outdoor terrace.

Hello, Tardigrade,
Romeo & Juliet's Bakery & Cafe opened a location in Hamburg recently. While I haven't been to this new spot, I've had many fine meals at the original location on Hertel Ave. in North Buffalo.

http://rjcaffe.com/contact.html

Have you been to Black Iron Bystro in Blasdell? I've heard good things about the newish spot from friends.

http://blackironbystro.com/

If your mother is not boycotting Mulberry's sister restaurants, the Mulberry's owner and an owner of Brick Oven Bistro (Abbott Road, S.Buffalo) opened the Mess Hall in Lackawanna earlier this year.

I had a great breakfast at Break'n Eggs Creperie on Main St. in Williamsville recently. It was my first crepe experience, and I had two eggs with cheddar cheese in a crepe, with sides of excellent diced and crispy home fries and the freshest fruit in recent memory. Real fruit! Raspberries! The menu has sweet and savory crepes. The spot is small and the tables are close together. Expect a line. Service was excellent.

Ah,you had me there for a minute, about *your* hockey team, franpelyk. There's a newer pizza spot near the arena but I have not heard great things about it. I'll still go there, of course, because they serve pizza: http://www.hydraulichearth.com/. There are good people running the place, so perhaps any kinks will be sorted out. (I had a fine wood-fired pizza last night at La Tavola on Hertel Ave. in North Buffalo.)

I'm mad about the pizza at Brick Oven Bistro in South Buffalo. The restaurant is family-owned and family friendly. Did I mention it has a pretty serious beer list, too? http://www.brickovendeli.com/
Although Deli is in the restaurant's name, there is no deli. Rocco's on Transit Road in East Amherst is another fine spot that will appeal to adults and children alike. http://www.roccoswoodfiredpizza.com/. Born and raised in East Aurora, NY, I'm conditioned to reply that Bar Bill on Main St., E. Aurora, has the best beef on weck, but it's a small, crowded spot and I don't recommend it for groups, especially on a weekend. Try Schwabl's in West Seneca, as tardigrade has advised. Enjoy the weekend! We're glad to have you in town. Let me know if I can answer any questions. Caveat: I've been a vegetarian for nearly 30 years.

Davwud (DT), is correct. There is no Costco in Buffalo. I've been to the one in Myrtle Beach. It's amazing. I make do with BJ's Wholesale but it can't compare to Costco.

Thank you for this recipe, Fowler. I'm planning to bring it to my office party and neighbors' house on Christmas Eve.

If your friend lives in the city of Buffalo, especially near Hertel or Elmwood avenues, I recommend a gift certificate to Globe Market. She can order salads, soups, sandwiches and, from the main location on Elmwood, she can select prepared entrees and a changing selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal options.

Hello, Tardigrade,
Have you been to Brick Oven Bistro on Abbott Road in South Buffalo? There are no stairs and the restaurant has a parking lot. I really like the food. My only quibble is the full name: Brick Oven Bistro and Deli. There is no deli. A deli case, but no deli. I like the pizza, but the menu has salads and entrees, plus a kickin' beer list.

http://www.brickovendeli.com/

I also like Black Rock Kitchen on Amherst St. in Black Rock (northern part of Buffalo). http://www.blackrockkitchenandbar.com...

I've been to Merge many times. The service can be slow, and I'm usually pleased if I stick to non-entrees, such as sides, salads and sandwiches. I've found the entrees to be small and sometimes disappointing for the price. I recommend giving it a try. http://mergebuffalo.com/

Another suggestion: Rocco's Wood Fired Pizza on Transit Road (north of Maple) in Amherst. This restaurant in a suburban strip plaza is surprisingly sleek and classy inside. It serves far more than pizza.

http://www.roccoswoodfiredpizza.com/

I have some other casual restaurant suggestions, such as Ashker's Juice Bar, Bistro and Gallery on Elmwood Ave. (the Elmwood Strip) in Buffalo(http://www.ashkers.com/). It's one of the places that, when I know I'm dining there at night, I think about all day at work. Another is Sweetness_7 on Grant St. on the city's west side. It's a coffee shop with darned good food. http://sweetness7.com/ It has a second location on Parkside, near Delaware Park and the zoo.

Although I'm too late for the OP, I've been wanting to visit the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute's restaurants, located on the American side of Niagara Falls. I promise to follow-up with a review if I get there soon. I live in Buffalo so it's not too far. I had a fine lunch meal recently at the Red Coach Inn in Niagara Falls, NY. The wood-paneled dining room evoked memories of field trips to Old Fort Niagara, and the food and service surpassed my expectations. The location, overlooking the rapids leading to the falls, was convenient. Thanks for these great local ideas, Chow Posters.

Please note Ulrich's Tavern is temporarily closed. The story below, from a February 2014 Buffalo News article, says the new owner hoped to re-open by mid-April.

My family swears by the Bar Bill's beef on weck. I am East Aurora-born and raised, but, much to my mother's chagrin, a vegetarian. She likes Schwabl's and Eckl's.

Note the Bar Bill is small and has only a few tables (it is in the process of expanding) and does not accept credit cards.

While born in Buffalo, I am a thin-crust fan most of the time. My current favorite pizza is from Brick Oven Bistro and Deli in South Buffalo. The mushroom pizza is heavenly. All food at this restaurant is above average, and I highly recommend a visit.

http://www.brickovendeli.com/

Romeo and Juliet's pizza is always very, very good. For true Buffalo-style pizza, Bocce gets my vote (Bailey Ave. and Hopkins Rd. locations, only please), with Leonardi's a close second.

At Ruzzine's Rock Bottom, I liked the roasted, stuffed red bell peppers (listed under the gluten-free portion of the menu). My friends loved the clams casino (very large clams, large serving, too) and their burgers looked pretty tempting. We had an excellent server. It was a busy restaurant but she kept things rolling. I was surprised that good, not-all-fried food came out of this restaurant.

Personally, I'd return to Amy's, but I must state that I have not been to Lake Effect Diner for breakfast. (Sign me up for "reading for comprehension" quickly.) There is a newish place called Break'n Eggs Crêperie at
5235 Main St. at Linwood Ave., between S. Forest Rd. & S. Union Rd., just west of the Village of Williamsville),
"Greater" Williamsville, Town of Amherst,
634-EGGS (634-3447) but I haven't been there yet. It sounds different from the usual and much-beloved diner breakfast. If you go to Amy's or Lake, you'll be near Parkside Candy, which has a fine selection. I'm glad you mentioned grocery stores, because I buy candy often at Wegmans. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the candy store choices you've listed above.

Congratulations, TeacherFoodie. I'm not sure when you're planning to visit but Bistro Europa will be closing March 31. It's moving from Elmwood Ave. to Connecticut St. (Would hate for you to be left in the cold.) By the way, you've made some solid choices. I recommend eating at Shango, Ashker's, Rock Bottom Eatery and Globe Market. These places are some of my favorites. Dare I throw in a new spot: Brick Oven Bistro and Deli on Abbott Road in South Buffalo? It's not a deli or a bistro, methinks, but has great food for brunch, lunch and dinner. Best Regards. I would skip Lake Effect Diner.

I recommend stopping for breakfast at Sophia's in North Buffalo. It's early into your trip (but so worth it), and I'll try to think of spots that are more equidistant between Niagara and Ellicottville.

I'm sorry that I don't know if any of these spots are handicapped-accessible. I recommend the Dove (3002 Abbott Rd., Orchard Park, NY 14127, on the border of Lackawanna); Mulberry (64 Jackson Ave, Lackawanna, NY 14218); Two Sisters Cafe (breakfast and lunch in Orchard Park); and Nelson's Ridge (breakfast and lunch; corner of Ridge and South Park, across from Our Lady of Victory Basilica). I'm sorry that I don't know if any of these spots are handicapped-accessible. I shall do some research and try to come up with restaurants that are in compliance and meet your needs.

Have you tried Weber's horseradish mustard? My friends and family, living in the U.S. south and southwest, always stock up on Weber's when in town. It's pretty amazing stuff, and is available at both Tops and Wegmans. I'm a Wegmans fan, but must divulge that only Tops sells Weber's in a squeeze bottle. You can be like my father and transfer the product from a jar into a squeeze container, if you wish. Joke. I strongly recommend going to Wegmans. Friends in TO always asked me to bring Smart Food, a bagged popcorn, when I visited in previous decades. I'm not sure if Smart Food is now available in Ontario, but you can find it in the U.S. with the chips and pretzels. Happy shopping.
