Where can I find a good place to have Chinese/Taiwanese soy milk for breakfast with yu tiao, shao bing, fan tuan, etc.? Somewhere on the Peninsula would be convenient for the first meal of the day but I'm willing to make the drive for something really good.

I have a friend who is notoriously bad at pronouncing non-English food words. These mispronunciations aren't common but they still amuse me: "fay-ta" for feta, "pan-setta" for pancetta, and "beckamel" for bechamel.

Also, I nearly pull my hair out when I hear people say chez "pa-nee" for Chez Panisse because they think dropping all "s" sounds is what you do with French names.

And I totally agree with EWSflash about habanero.

Attention New Yorkers who are looking for fresh masa: Hot Bread Kitchen in East Harlem (at La Marqueta on Park Ave & 115th) sells fresh masa made from blue, yellow, or white corn. It's only available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and you have to call ahead to order it for $3/lb.

 

Hi everyone, I'm in need of a couple boneless duck breasts for Thanksgiving dinner. Any recommendations for where to get some? I was planning to check all the neighborhood butcher shops I know of (Schaller & Weber, Holland Court Meat Market, Lobel's, Citarella, Ottomanelli, Prime) but figured it might be more efficient to ask a knowledgeable group of chowhounds first.

I just tried Hale & Hearty's Senegalese chicken soup today and would love to make something like it at home (especially on cold, snowy days). Looking forward to trying your recipe, thanks!

In addition to what's already been mentioned:

Nick's on 2nd Ave and 94th is a decent sit-down pizza place. Cafe d'Alsace on 2nd Ave and 88th is a mid-price restaurant with French-German food. For standard Thai takeout within walking distance, I usually go to Gong on 99th near 3rd Ave. Joy Burger on Lex and 100th is popular too; Shake Shack on 86th is another casual burger option.

For bakeries/desserts, you cannot beat Two Little Red Hens on 2nd Ave between 86th and 85th! Plenty on 3rd Ave between 83rd and 82nd is also good. And Glaser's on 1st Ave and 87th is a lovably crusty old bakery (cheap too).

For vegetarian options, Maoz has a new-ish stand in Central Park on 5th Ave and 106th (though I'm not sure if it'll be open year-round). Brick Lane Curry looks like it's opening soon on 3rd Ave and 93rd.

For pastries, I second the recommendation for Two Little Red Hens! There's also Plenty. Sadly I don't know of any other ice cream shops in the area aside from the even-more-soulless Baskin Robbins. London Candy Co. has interesting British-themed ice cream made by Je & Jo but it comes pre-packed in tiny cups (for $5 each). Maybe Shake Shack? I ran into the Coolhaus truck in front of the Met once, but it isn't one of their regular spots.

How about the Horsebox on Ave. A and 14th? They don't serve food but you can bring your own. Lots of takeout options.

I recommend both kinds of noodles. They have liang pi (cold skin) which uses wheat flour and rice flour, I think. The hand-ripped noodles are wheat noodles. You can get them with pork or spongy wheat gluten pieces. There is a pork burger too if you don't like lamb but want a burger (it's ok... meaty and cheap).

Hong Kong Supermarket on the NE corner of Elizabeth and Hester. The fridge case on the far right wall toward the back of the store has a huge selection of tofu products, including shredded dried tofu (豆干絲, dòugānsī).

Another vote for Totto Ramen. They've been consistently good and I like their cold (hiyashi) ramen, which is only available in the summer. The largest party they'll seat is 4. There's usually a crush of people and long waits when it opens at noon, but things get a little better after a couple hours (what I've noticed on weekdays, anyway).

Minca and Kambi aren't bad either, and Ippudo feels more stylish/classy as another poster pointed out, but the food is good. I've been meaning to try Jin Ramen as well, since it's been so highly recommended.

I was going to say the same thing that rockfish42 pointed out: genetic engineering (splicing "foreign" genes into an organism's DNA) and selective breeding (picking out certain animals to mate with each other, based on desired traits) are two different things. One has to be done in a lab and the other has been around since humans figured out how to domesticate animals. Commodity corn, soy, and cotton are genetically engineered in the U.S. (and GMO salmon is under review), but that's about it.

+ another 1 for pears! Pizza with thinly sliced pears, blue cheese, walnuts/pecans, and arugula is a favorite in my home. My local pizza place also does thinly sliced potato with gorgonzola and a few basil leaves.

I have a beautiful large-ish head of Treviso radicchio from my CSA that is very very bitter. I know this is just the way the vegetable is, but that harsh bitter edge at the end of every bite is a little bit too intense for our tastes. Any tips for how to subdue it?

Thanks for all the suggestions! We ended up going with Huntington Catering Co. and were very, very happy with everything. Good food, very reasonable prices, and the entire staff was so friendly and great to work with. I felt like my guests and I were in great hands. Highly recommended!
