As an old Yankee Lobstah eatah I can testify that in the case of homarus americanus, bigger is not always better. As lobsters get bigger than two pounds, they get progressively tougher. I must admit that that is an impressive specimen though. Funny story, I remember as a child, my Dad getting culls (one clawed lobsters) at the lobster co-op because they were cheaper. He explained to my brother that that demonstrated their fighting spirit. Brother Bill replied, "Dad, next time you pick a fightah, pick a winnah!".

$8 lb. at Alioto Lazio , but very big. @2.25 and 2.5 lbs each. Too big to fit both in the steamer. I love those ladies.

Try San Francisco Poultry on the east side of Grant not far from Broadway. They have a huge selection of poultry (including the elusive Guinea hen). It is laboratory clean to boot.

"You're not paying for fish, you're paying for men's lives!"...Sir Walter Scott. $2 a pound is only $4 per crab, which still makes for a cheap luxury.

$8 lb. today at Alioto-Lazio. About 2.5 lbs. each though. Looking forward to picking them. I love "the girls".

I share your enthusiasm, Melanie, so I got two wheels, one for Thanksgiving and one for me. The one we opened for the feast was a little disappointing, and not at all runny. Perhaps the other will be better later. Any opinion?

This is exactly the kind of query that drew me to Chowhound in the first place, sadly very rare now that we've gotten all "Gary Danko"ed up. The consensus for the best cheap dim sum in Chinatown would seem to be Dol Ho on Jackson(?) St. Not top notch, but the atmosphere is authentic. Higher prices and superior quality may be had at Lai Hong on Powell St or Dim Sum Club on Van Ness Ave. (where parking is relatively easy by San Francisco standards). I'm not a huge pizza fan, which in my opinion The City is oversaturated with, but the sheet pan pizza at Golden Boy on Green St. with a pint of draft is my idea of a perfect snack. Also don't overlook Yuet Lee for modestly priced Cantonese Seafood with a view of the passing parade on B'way. Thanks for not saying "San Fran"! P.S. Dim Sum club serves in the evening!

If you like khao soi you should try the version at Kitti's Place in Sausalito, now that it has been added to the regular menu. It's the only version I've ever had, but I could go for some right now!

Just got 2 from Alioto-Lazio. $6.50 per lb. They're running a little small, but they're lively. I'll post later on the meat to shell ratio.

You should consider Seafood Peddler in Sausalito. I've never eaten there, except for some oysters at the bar, but I've gotten some excellent fish from their on-site market. There's also a good view of the yacht harbor. Normally a water view means lowered expectations for me, but this is not the case. Easy parking too.

My favorite version of eggs and shrimp is at Yuet Lee. Still a fan of Dim Sum Club. Prices have certainly crept up, but where haven't they.

They have even smiled at me! Especially after I explained to a tai-tai what I was planning on doing to an $18 guinea hen.

Dial 650-726-8724. They re-new the message irregularly. But there seemed to be a big haul this week.

Just back from a very rewarding expedition. Got a 16 pounder for $190. Split it with me good buddy Ike, and it gave about 13 lbs. of filet. We grilled the bones and head for some great salmon salad. The rest will become gravlax and saute. Very little waste. I'd do it again in a shot. Also lots of rockfish, black cod , ling cod and rock crab available. P.S. the fishermen are not supposed to filet the fish for you, but some will.

Thank you both for the advice.
Keep in mind that salmon runs $30 retail in the stores, the guts are removed after catching, and it's the only way to get enough to make gravlax. My principessa loves gravlax!

According to the "fish fone" there was salmon available off the boat last weekend. If there is any this Saturday I just might make the drive. Any recent experiences there? I'm especially curious about size and price.

I found a couple of adequate looking ones at Alemany, but then I found a real keeper at Lucero at FPFM. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I do love a good melon!

Yankee food guru John Thorne has a recipe that uses maple syrup, apple cider jelly and finishes with a shot of rum (after baking). Good.

Thanks. Alemany has fallen out of my rotation lately, but I'll check it out Saturday.

It's time we should be seeing Cranshaw (Crenshaw?) melon in our local farmers' markets, but I haven't seen nary a one! Any leads on the Queen of Melons? My go-to melon man says they are particularly demanding to cultivate.

I was a big fan of Bao Necci when they took over Danilo Bakery, but with the new later hours, and the over $20 single serving pizzas, I just don't make it there anymore. Great pizza, but too dear for me.

While I will miss the "old" Alfred's, I won't miss the "new" version at all. The change to an a la carte menu and increased steak prices made it unaffordable for me (prices were practically doubled). Loved the cocktail shakers with the extra though.
