Going to be in the area this Friday, solo. I love bar seating and high tops. Will be near College of Charleston. Price isn't an issue but want something that will be memorable - both atmosphere and food. THANKS!

Please tell me some good places in North Myrtle area if you know of any Lala. Would appreciate it! Thanks!

I'm seconding your recommendation on the Collectors Cafe because I was there about three years ago. I Fell upon the place and boy was I very pleasantly surprised. You always expect beach towns to have "meh" food options or strictly family fare. Not the case with Collectors Cafe. It's upscale dining (and prices, be forewarned!) Creative and thoughtfully prepared. I recall gracious service to boot.

I'm going back to Myrtle this week with family and I'm thrilled the restaurant is still around. I'll be back! Those scallop cakes are still calling my name!

Yes. I was at this restaurant maybe three years ago. Glad to know it's still around as I will be there for a full week with family soon. This place is a sanctuary. When you see all that is wrong with this resort area, and then see the menu, and then taste the food, you will remember me and praise me.

And the scallop cake... oh my. I still have dreams.

This place shouldn't be in Myrtle, but it is! Run, don't walk... and remember my name in your prayers.

Because myrtle Beach is a vast culinary waste land without this place!

Josh opened up a 2nd restaurant on Hwy 321. "Josh's Fish, Fowl and Cow" I haven't been, but I like Josh's. The most "big city" presentation and original flavors in the area. So I hope his 2nd restaurant carries on with the trend.
Original Josh's: http://www.joshsonunionsquare.com/ind...
New Josh's: No website yet, but has a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Joshs-...

Another small stand out in "Viewmont" off of Hwy 127 is a small restaurant called "Bistro 127". Chef uses seasonal, local and organic ingredients for the most part.

New Greek / Mediterranean Restaurant that I have not been to: "Santorini Grill " Also in Viewmont area off of Hwy 127.

I still like Youseff's.

Maybe more folks will contribute.

Report back where you go!!!

Ahhhhh.... D.V.

Welcome to Hickory!

Agreed. Websites are a rare thing around these parts for restaurants.

NEW ADDITIONS:
Josh's.... Crescent Moon Cafe.... and Michael's on 4th has CLOSED. Youseff's still rocks, too!

My neighbor is saying, "just go to Cracker Barrel" and get ham, green beans and mac/cheese and call it a day.

I feel so defeated, but.... I might just do it because I'm buying for several friends and family that can't attend. I now have a budget if $125 to buy food.

Yikes... sigh....

I prefer the special mom and pops, but just like here in Hickory, the good ones will be closed on Sunday's. Bummers about Lex's but I'm not surprised.

It's a local family. I don't need to bring anything fancy. Good ole local southern comfort food will work. I see what Fresh Market has.

Thanks

Please help. I live in hickory - not far, and I can bring a chiller and or a slowcooker to keep something warm. But either way I don't know what to buy or where best to buy it.

I will be traveling through W-S, so that's an option as well.

In essence any place along 40 between hickory and Greensboro would work.

Have an 80 dollar budget to buy food for the family as there will be a gathering post 4pm funeral

Thanks for ideas on what to buy and where to buy it!

I have a Beef Shoulder Roast. About the size of a grapefruit. Maybe 3 - 4 lbs.

What do I do with it?

The least ingrediants possible, please... and step by step (dummy proof) directions, if you please. (Note: it's homegrown beef. Grass / hay fed. Not grain fed. Tends to be pretty lean and can be tough. So slow cooking might be best?!)

THANKS!

Good point on Japanese restaurants.

If you want authentic Japanese restaurant, try Umi's in Viewmont off of 127 (Cloninger Mill Rd) near the bridge to Bethlehem. The owner / chefs are from Japan and they don't serve everything with Shrimp Sauce or Sweet Carrots.

They have a simplistic sushi menu. Nothing crazy creative nor extensive, but they do a good job with the basics. Their curry Katsu is TOO DIE FOR. The real deal...

I've had some creative, tasty sushi at Sakura's, too.

Must admit, not knowing Durham at all, the outside of the restaurant was a bit odd. I thought it was a college hang out bar! But man, what a surprise in the kitchen! ; )

Thought I would report back. Chose the Federal. Good thing I knew in advance about the service being somewhat lackluster - but with our group of 11, I really can't complain too much.

The food was very good. Fresh, inspired and reasonable. Can't beat that combo. All were delighted with what they ordered. Many thanks for all your suggestions!

Little doubt in my mind that MMC didn't mean "dreadful"... maybe MMC meant: "While as a whole, Charlotte may not have as wide a variety of restaurants found in, say, So Cal, if you keep your mind open and enjoy what the locals do best, you'll be surprised. Fried Pickles for starters."

; )

FYI, I'm new to N Carolina and I'm not even in Charlotte... I'm in Hickory. Hick-o-ry! Having lived in a few major US cities and traveled fairly extensively internationally, I'm still getting challenged to live in a small town with one authentic Japanese restaurant and NO Indian restaurants at all. BUT! Do I have the glorious exposure to Western Carolina BBQ, both Sliced & chopped versions? HELL YEAH! And what about the sublime "All the Way Burger" experience. Browned, slightly crisp Livermush served eggs and grits. YUM!

MMC - I hope you are exploring and challenging yourself to find what's new for your tastebuds in your new home in Queens City.

I've traded in decent fresh pita and "real bagels" for amazing homemade biscuits. It's a trade off I can live with considering I still travel and get my fix of the foods I miss!

Charlotte Restaurant : Nolen Kitchen & CRESCENT BAR AND LOUNGE

I've been here twice and I plan to return. This place is REALLY good. Fresh prepared / fresh ingrediants and perfect service with a heck of a wine list. Ok - The Guiness is served in bottles, but other than that, you can't beat the upscale swank of this place in little old Charlotte! Prices are really reasonable considering in a more urban sophisticated city they would probably be about 33% more! Ambience is fetching too!

Favorite Dish: Fried calamari rocks. Sandwiches are good (I had the curry chicken sandwich). I had a risotto that was pretty decent. Their Sweet Potato Bisque was heaven unequaled. Consider this if you are looking for fine upscale food in a small quaint southern city. Good enough to be in Chicago or Boston. Good... and attentive service to match!

Theme: Eclectic/International
Comparison: about average
Prices: US$21-30 per person
Phone: 704-372-1424
Address: 2839 Selwyn Avenue Charlotte, NC 28209
About a 12 minute drive from Tryon and 3rd. Worth finding!

One of the local Durham members suggested "Piedmont"...

Any thoughts on this restaurant?!

hexepatty
hexepatty commented 14 years ago

Many thanks to you both. "TAPAS" sounds like a plan. That way folks can still chat and eat and not have hunker down for a big ole entree.

Hate to be a pain, but do you happen to know if Watt's Grocery is smoke free?

I have about 10 - 15 folks from a travel website (Virtual Tourist) that will converge in Durham the end of August. Looking for a restaurant that will accommodate a group, not try to shoo us out quickly and yet be tasty and not high-end pricey. We will linger and eat... and probably drink.

I've seen EXCELLENT restaurants listed on several threads for the Durham area, but we will need just the right spot for this chatty group!

Any suggestions?

My mother would season her chowders with salt pork in both the corn and clam chowders. I try not to use it, but man does it taste GREAT in the Corn Chowder!

You got me thinking: I live in N Carolina, but was brought up by a proper Bostonian mother. She made Clam and Corn chowders (with potatoes) and I NEVER saw her add flour or corn starch.

I guess I made a hybred! ; )

My potatoes were cubed small and I used chicken broth, but I did not have cream. Just milk and evaporated milk.

For the dinner the other evening I wanted to use what I had, which wasn't much. Had a sack of red potatos, a few strips of bacon, green onions and milk and evaporated milk. I made either Potato Chowder or Cream of Potato soup... and I got to thinking, what is the difference? Anyone know?

NICE!

Question: apparently because our cattle are organic / grass / hay fed, they are VERY tough. I was told be prepared to cook slow and long cuz otherwise they will be tough.

Will these recipes work to tenderize at all?

Will marinading overnight make it tender?

I'm curious... THANKS!

Steak Diane has my name all over it. Swiss steak on alternating days.

THANKS YOU TWO!

I'm new to living on a small southern farm with a few cattle raised for personal consumption. I found out we are getting half a steer this week. All hamburger, cubed steak and t-bones. I know what to do with the burger and t-bones. At a loss at what to do with the cubed steaks. I'm not a big country fried steak person. Anyone have ideas? Apparently I'll have QUITE A FEW cubed steak packs. Like maybe 15 - 20 or so! ; /

This March of '08 I ate at Circa 1922 and found the food fresh, fun and plenty of it. Reasonable costs for the servings, friendly staff and inviting atmosphere.

I didn't go off the charts with inventivness in ordering. Eggplant rollatinis (fresh & flavorful ) and fried calamari (good, not oily and plenty). Dessert was chocolate coconut sushi (inventive but FAR too sweet to eat more than 2 - 3 pieces. They serve it with 8 pieces.)

Having about 50 folks in Braintree (Tara Sheraton near the mall) in July. Need a decent family style (read: reasonable) within about 15 minutes from Braintree to include Quincy. Any ideas? We all love seafood!

That's my sentiment exactly. The peas, cheap! Celery/Onions/Carrots: cheap. Ground turkey... a freeby from family.

What i'm now doing is researching CROCKPOTS! I want a new one (I was using boyfriends ANCIENT crockpot that has no timer settings!) Looking into this as we speak.

Thanks everyone!
