I an afraid the taste/texture will be compromised if used raw.

Due to illness, I have a helper that shops for me and prepares very basic meals. I was always told onions should be NOT refrigerated. Well, there are five lbs. in my fridge. Avice, plase.

OK. I will play!! Asparagus is in season here for the month or so and I am going to have it every which way. But for some reason quiche is on my mind. Can we do quiche with all the endless possibilities? I know; retro. But hits the spot sometimes!!

I was out for lunch and ordered an omelet. And it came with Hollandaise. I am now obsessed.

I am all about Tabasco.
But right now it is Frank's hot sauce (less expensive.)
It's pretty good.

But, I have to admit, Pittsburgh born and raised, always Heinz ketchup.

And Isaly's chipped chopped ham. In a pan with the ketchup and sweet relish. Sounds weird, but a very good sandwich!!

Growing up, summer in backyard at little plastic pool. Lunch is white bread, the ham. My sister was ketchup, I was the plain yellow mustard. One day mom mixed our paper plates up. CHAOS!!!

Amazing what food memories do . . .

Never ever as a child. When I was learning to hand sew . . . sewing basket with everything for Christmas. My mother started me out with a washcloth to do stitching on. Yellow. I could not use red thread because of the scrambled eggs and ketchup thing. As a young woman, out with my date (became husband) others having that . Yuck. Now I am much older; I will try it. But confession. I will put Heinz on Kraft mac and cheese. And I have learned people are very discerning about eggs. I like perfectly poached. But no ketchup!!! And I know I blibber blather. My apologies.

Honest to the gods of cooking universe . . . I am not much of a baker but my poppyseed cake is famous. That aside, I was having company on short notice. I actually did the box of cake mix with can of soda pop. I did spice with ginger ale, added some chopped walnuts and dried cranberries. Very moist; no frosting needed at all, but did dust with a wee bit of powdered sugar. But I guess that is an autumn flavor and now it is spring. So now I am also in need of cake! And berries sound so good . . .

Oh my. Asparagus will be coming in and 7$ a pound. I simply steam crisp tender, fresh lemon, S&P, but my project is learning Hollandaise. Daunting.

I am in NW PA; no decent tomatoes until summer homegrown. But I discovered at the store Campari tomatoes. They are also called cocktail tomatoes. Very good flavor. I have a basket of them on my counter at all times. Maybe try them for your bruschetta (which I have yet to make . . .) My project is Hollandaise. Asparagus will be in soon (we hope.) But until I master Hollandaise, fresh lemon is fine. Also always on kitchen counter!!

I never got the point of the artichokes either. Too much prep, and too much work to eat. Scrape something endlessly and that was it, to get to the heart? Two bites of real food? Though I will prepare dishes with artichoke hearts. .. That was some beer. Yowza!

Butter is good. I remember as a child my parents arguing endlessly over margarine (Mom) and butter (Dad). Many a tense dinner table when bread and/or baked potatoes were involved. "Scenes from a Marriage" . . . I use butter. Pure butter. Unsalted, of course!

That is hilarious!! As a child, I never knew about A1. (Adult son tells me if a steak is good it needs nothing. S&P OK) In my childhood home, Worcestershire was served with steak. I still like it. But not on steak! Which is insignificant now, as I am all about seafood! Shandy . . .I was in my mid twenties, married, went to a party. At the home of a couple who had been in the Peace Corps after college. Kenya.Always some different things with them. The main libation was beer with gingerale? I tried it. I liked it! Have never had it since, though! Damn! (Same couple introduced me to whole steamed artichokes. Love them but never make them!)

Exactly. Loss of flavor and texture.. And some are still too much sodium if I expect to eat something good over the day. 1200mg. Adds up fast! But I have adapted very well. And discovered how such simple things as fresh lemons and assorted vinegars can be wonderful. Back to childhood. Who ate ketchup on meatloaf when that was dinner? First time it was served to me with gravy I could not deal. I now nominate nannygoat as THE info Chowhounder.

Does Campbell's still make vegetarian vegetable, the one with the alphabet noodles? My sister was bemoaning years ago that it was changed; we loved it as children. I am ignorant of the canned soup aisle I am on a very low sodium diet, but I do indulge in the tomato. Won't give it up. Uh oh. Will use cream of mushroom in cooking. . . sometimes ya just need it. Chicken noodle? Nope. Lipton!!

Velveeta mac and cheese. When my son was 4 we visited a neighbor. She made the kids supperof mac and cheese on stove top with Velveeta. No box. Son was impressed. But still scarfed the box in HS after practice! (I never made real mac and cheese. . . .bad mom.)

Thanks, Duffy! Soon as legs get stronger and I can stand long enough to bake (and cook) I am there. I really miss my kitchen fun!! Even if I bomb in the end, the trying is always an adventure!

Don't feel bad about the tacos! I never had one until I was thirty five. Thought it would be easy supper and my husband and young son (six) would like them. Wrong. Too messy after you crunch into it, according to them.Have not had one since, and it's been just about twenty five years. Maybe I should go wild and have one!!

I liked the little Banquet pot pies. . . .thought they were so cute how you flipped it out of the little pan. My mother was happy her husband and 3 kids were easily pleased back then when she wasn't doing the dinner thing. . . Had TV dinners a few times and they were cute, too, with those little compartments. Didn't care about the food. . . (parents did not eat; this was if babysitter was coming for Saturday night.)

I am enjoying this thread! And a memory just popped into my addled brain (meds).
How about the big pack of those little boxes of a variety of cereals that you could pour the milk right into the box?! We begged and begged. Mom gave in once. Speaking of cereal: oatmeal or cream of wheat?

Jalepeno creamed corn, with cheddar , cream cheese and butter. I am so trying this!! Will ha
Have to do several solo quality assurance checks before sharing . . .
Are the jalapenos chopped fresh, or canned?

Correct. Stocked up on nice deals, anticipating the holiday through New Year.
But I can get through Groundhog Day and Valentines now as I was 2 months gone (missed the holiday season) due to shattered pelvis. And I like to keep a nice selection on hand for thank you gifts. Lot of friends have been helping me as I am alone. Recipient gets to choose! Some know exactly their preference; others want to try something new. It's all good!
