Your squash looks like a zucchini or Mexican gray. The name probably comes from the absolutely fantastic when done right Mexican dish, Calabacitas, wherein you mix sliced zucchini or crookneck squash, which has been sauteed almost dry (very important, they need no water, but use a little fat if you must), then add green chiles, corn, mix in a casserole, cover with cheese, bake until the cheese is melted, and enjoy Heaven. You can saute some onion and garlic in a little (!) oil and add that to the mix. A Mexican mom taught me the bit about not needing water to cook the squash.
