If you can get to Chinatown during the season, you can sometimes find them alive and fresh for a good price. Bring a cooler! I used to stop by the fish stalls on the way home from work when I was able. We made friends with one stall (by spending a ton of money on his fish only) and would get the heads up when they were coming in. MMMMM,floured, salt and pepper, sauteed in butter......

Tin snips or aviation shears ( metal cutting scissors), available at hardware stores and big box home centers.
If the sheet metal isn't too heavy the a guillotine paper cutter might work, but you might cut your finger off....

I hates to get sand in my shores when I go to the shoe! It dulls my knails!

petek, I am sorry you missed my point, they are just so nice looking, not drab like those black handled ones!

I like the yellow the best, easiest to find in all of the clutter on my cutting board....

Actually the Victorinox Fibrox handles come in wonderful colors as part of the food safety movement... We love our yellow and red ones and are looking at some blue ones!
Red- Meat
Yellow-Chicken
Blue -fish
Green -veggie
etc....
Alas, my Sabatiers all have black handles...

Used Sabatier carbon steel on eBay, then you have money leftover to buy high end food and good booze. (and a good sharpening stone and steel)

Wow!!! I have and I ALWAYS add extra to the fine to help out the library...but I wouldn't worry about being a couple of items over in the cart, after all, I bag my own and don't fumble around with payment or coupons...

We have made and froze homemade TV dinners with meatloaf and all the fixins in aluminum trays to reheat in oven when visiting our summer cottage offseason for short stays . Never a problem and very good with little cleanup...

For a more delicate lard try rendering in simmering water, then cool well and remove lard cake from top.

Rod and Gun Club... take a chance and step back in time, we enjoyed our dinner and the cottage room was clean but very dated.
At the very least stop for a cocktail, old Florida at its best!

We went to the National Park and the Rangers took us canoeing with the alligators , manatees, and dolphins. A wonderful experience, despite those darn airboats zooming around with Northern Tourists, if you have ever been in a canoe before.

Just wondering how much water you boiled every day?
Also what were the humidity levels?

It takes a lot of water to raise the humidity level and boiling water is not a very efficient method of adding humidity into a home unless you are piggybacking on a wood stove, which I doubt you have in a condo.

Splurge on an humidifier next heating season, even a counter-top model from the drugstore would be better. We use an ultrasonic one from Walgreens and put about 3 gallons a day thru it. Had to clean once every 6 weeks, very easy to do. I imagine less cleaning if your water is less hard or mineral laden than ours.

Do you add aromatics to the water? Like cinnamon?

"which is what the USDA makes you do"

The USDA can kiss my" frying pan " when it MAKES me do anything.

Thank God I only buy old used cookbooks for pennies on the dollar.

So it is your fault Radio Shack is going out of business? LOL

I am shocked , that everyone is not as frugal as we are ,or not as flush as you appear to be.

We are actually looking forward to see if we saved a few dollars . Hopefully their store brands don't suck.

The IRA is overfull and needs to be spent!

Lovena goes onto say that "water pills" are available with prescription at the pharmacy dept. She states "Most of our customers do not know what is good or good for them so we have partnered with big pharma, big agra, and big govt to take care of all of their needs."

Included is a 25 cent off coupon for any of our prepared foods....

We did our second ever shop at Aldi the other day on the recommendation of a friend. We usually shop at Wegmans, a local Mennonite butcher, and our local egg farmer.

As the OP states, no name brands, all store brand, but many are the same as Trader Joes, as they are related by adoption.

We bought coffee beans, almonds, cashews, milk, german sauerkraut in glass, german bratwurst, a sirloin-tip roast, asiatic lily bulbs, celery, maraschino cherries, german lemon "oreos" and a coffee thermos. (and more)

Everything was less expensive than Wegmans.
The coffee thermos is great!
The sirloin roast was wonderful.
Milk is milk...

To be determined on the other items.

No bags was not an issue. We bring our own boat bags and used boxes available. 25 cent deposit on cart not an issue.
Not accepting credit card, just debit and cash. We do not do debit and cash was close.

Store was clean and neat. Not crowded at all. Cashiers fast . Mennonite shoppers interesting to observe buying staples and ingredients, no prepared foods, and very polite.

Today we are going back to buy Fridays fresh delivered cut flowers.

We will be adding Aldi to our shopping stops.

I have started transplants from seeds in a southern unshaded greenhouse without grow-lights. A southern facing unshaded/unobstructed window might work.
We started them around St. Pats Day, mid -March for planting late May/early June.
Now we use grow-lights as our circumstances have changed.

Tomato transplants can be very small when put in the earth and still yield a wonderful crop, BTW.

We live in central NY and for the first time all winter my driveway isn't covered with snow ! We grill all year but admittedly less in the dead of winter.
We have a 15 year old Waterford propane grill. It has 3 burners so you can leave one or two off for indirect roasting.
We keep at least one extra 20# tank on hand so we never are caught short. When one empties it goes right in the pickup to be filled/exchanged next trip to town.

I have replaced the burners and "flavor" plates at least 3 times, an easy job with parts available online. Well worth it as the grill is a nice one.

Cleaning is just a quick brushing with a long handles stainless steel brush. Amazing how high heat burns all the crap off !

We grill the usual steaks, chops, burgers, shrimp, along with veggies including cauliflower , asparagus, summer squash, onions, peppers.. A nicely grilled burger, with grilled onion slice (held together with toothpicks) and a 1/2 a grilled pepper on a toasted kaiser roll is nothing to discount....

Purists swear by chunk charcoal and they are right but I could not be bothered.

Aluminum foil packets are handy to steam veggies and fish also on indirect heat.

Enjoy!

Here is a another idea according to my friend Chef Ezra from the Ithaca Hawks Nest in the Finger Lakes of NY.
Chef Ezra says to split the 2 ribs into 2 equal thickness steaks. Marinate with Worcestershire Sauce and ground pepper/salt.

Throw the suckers into a very hot cast iron pan, cook for a minute or 2, then put the pan under your hot broiler to finish for a few minutes or until done. Wear gloves or use pot holders.

Chef Ezra says it is fast and easy way of earning a great sear.

Not toxic, but bitter.
The peel will add roughage to the juice. You might not like that much roughage in your diet, but then again you might.
Let us know how it works out.

Erica,
On our new test model "Mr. Induction" table top model, I put my bare hand on the "burner" and it did not heat up. It needs a ferrous metal (magnetic) to heat up.
Can't wait to try the paper towel method, it should be fine ,because the temperature of the bottom of the pot never gets to 451 degrees F.

The "burner/coil" doesn't heat up, it causes the ferrous pot to heat up thru the magic of magnetism and particle physics.( I made the particle physics part up)
The burner will absorb some heat back from the pot from conduction, but not from the electricity.

Seems like a lot of work for 2 ribs that would roast up pretty quickly or even grill/broil nicely.
Split the sucker into 2 rib steaks and pan grill it! 10 -12 minutes or less...done...
