Do you have a costco membership? they have some nice cheeses, for cheddar, they have the British Coastal and Welsh Colliers. We usually just buy the Kerrygold Dubliner. Also, I have never tried it but Superstore has a PC Black Label Normandy Style Salted Cultured Butter ...

I also missed my trips to trader joe's and Costco in Bellingham ....

They sound great, thanks for telling us about them. I will make sure to look out next time I am in the area.

I have gotten it from Donald's market on Hastings a few times and I may have seen it in the place that sells polish sausages just east of Donalds across nanaimo.

the Parmesan crisps are definitely not with the bread, not exactly where the crackers are but in the same general area. It is call Whisps made by Cello, the bag is kind of orange, cream and green in color.

I have added a few extra things to my regular list:

POM juice
Kirkland protein bars
cauliflower rice
Philadelphia cream cheese 3 pack
Chosen Food Mayo
almond flour
my family also likes the salmon jerky
sweet onions

It's put chai go (put pronounced with a "b") , it can be made plain like the ones you had or with red bean added to it. here is one of the many recipes that showed up on google: https://scarletlunar.wordpress.com/20...

I loved these as a kid, especially the plain ones, my mom would bring them home from the market. She also sometimes brought home bak tong go and they are not the same, bak tong go is flat and about 3/4 inch thick, usually cut into diamond shape pieces ....

She talks about how to prepare fresh egg noodles at about 0:50 to avoid sticking, i think same technique can be used with fresh rice noodles.

I saw some in the Asian market on Hastings (just E of Nanaimo on the South side of the street) about a month ago. Probably not a regular item though...

Perhaps try the Gourmet Warehouse, they have quite a range of chocolate (including wafers & Couverture of different brands but don't know if they come tempered).

For Indian spices & herbs, the must haves for me is Cumin Seeds, Coriander Seeds, Green Cardamon, Cloves, Garam Masala (you can even make you own). You can make a very decent curry base with these and some onions, garlic, ginger and tomatoes (and I love cilantro). You can also make a simple chai with some of these spices.

Nice to have for me would be fenugeek (methi) leaves & seeds, curry leaves, fennel seeds, black cardamon.

Fresh paneer is good recommendation for veggie protein. I would also try some indian flat bread: paratha, roti, it is quite easy to make you own naan and very nice to have fresh but you can also get from the store. some papadoms to cook at home.

I am a big meat eater but these are the veggie Indian dishes that I like - any Paneer (Saag/spinach or any curry gravy), Malai Kofta (Vegetable cheese balls cooked in curry gravy, you may be able to get the cheese balls frozen), Aloo Gobi (cauliflower & potatoes - dry curry).

If you feel adventurous, you can get some chickpea (gram / besan) flour to play with and do pakoras, etc.

Basmati rice if you prefer less starchy rice and if you don't previously have access to it.

Thanks axllove4chow! That is great to know. When were you at Trader Joe's? Definitely nice to have a local source for it especially with the way the loonie is now.

Kerrygold is not sold in Vancouver but I usually stock up my butter in WA. I am aware of the Kerrygold situation so When I was in Bellingham a couple of months ago, I went looking for alternatives but found none except for the seasonal Organic Valley one but I didn't get any because it would have to sit in the hot car all day so ended up buying a bunch of Kerrygold again. I thought Anchor would be easy to find but not so ....

I got an 8 pound butt for $30 at Rio's friendly meat a couple of weeks ago. will get another one on monday ...

I make the every week, these are the ones that I use and it's very easier to get out, just run under hot water for a bit and it slides right out. My only advice is to try not to drop them when they are frozen because the plastic gets quite brittle and will break, otherwise, I really like them, good adult portions too.

Yes, HY Louie has it and if you prefer to shop online, uline also has it but there will be shipping. Not sure what you want it for, the one from Uline is quite a bit thicker & stronger.

I have 2 hardly used rolls, one from HY Louie, and one from Uline that I have no use for anymore. They are both 18" wide (one from uline is 600' long). If you want them, you can have both for $30.

Thanks Laura! I saw that Organic Valley seasonal butter at Haggen near REI and it was only $3.49, so it's out.

I wonder if Celles sur Belle is grass fed (not much turned up when i googled), although cost so much more than KG and the pasture OV.

wish I had known :( it was the Cordata store that I went in too but I only looked at the dairy/butter section ... oh well, good to know for next time, do you know which brand it is and weather it is always available? I have got enough KG to last a while now though :)

It wasn't a super successful trip for butter shopping, I did see the seasonal pasture butter from Organic Valley at Haggen by REI but I couldn't get any as it would have to sit in the hot car for hours and I thought I would just stop by the one on Meridan on the way out but I found out that they don't carry everything the other store does....

I did manage to buy a whole bunch of unsalted Kerrygold at TJ's and couldn't resist the price of the salted one at Costco so I got some of that too.... Wish I got to try the OV ...

I went to the food coop, but there was no grassfed butter, just the usual ones, also checked out fred meyer, cost cutter, walmart, the fairhaven farmers market ...

as a side note, Bayou on Bay has the best yam fries, they were tasty and stayed crispy even after they got cold. Although it didn't come with nearly enough dip, the little dipping bowl was a little over half full so I asked for more, and that came after about 10 mins and around a quarter full and when that was done, I asked for more to finish the fries but that never came so I ended up eating the fries cold because I wanted to wait for the dip.

Thanks Vetter! I was so disappointed to find out that Kerrygold is not 100% grassfed (20% grain fed in the winter including GMO) But I find nothing else, I will probably still get some KG ...

We will be there during the week so will probably miss the market ...

Yay for good butter indeed :D

We are going to spend a couple of days in Bellingham and since we cannot get grass fed butter easily in Canada, I would love to stock up while we are there. Does anyone know which grocery stores has the following brands of butter:

Anchor – New Zealand

Allgau – Germany

Smjor – Iceland

We will be staying close to Fred Meyer, definitely be hitting Trader Joe's & Costco, will probably check out the Grocery Outlet.

Thanks!

I second the recommendation of USA pans. I even make mini crustless quiches/fritattas in them and they still just pop right out when I turn the pan over.

Kerrisdale Lumber doesn't carry BGE anymore, they carry Primo & Kamado Joe. Some of the Kamado Joe accessories will probably fit the BGE though ...

I don't know if I have tasted Three Crabs. The last one I got from T&T had a boy on the label and the Red Boat tastes better.

I got it because it was recommended on a few paleo sites that I visit.

I have looked to no avail and ended up ordering from their website and picking up at Pt Roberts.

I suspect It will be too pricey for Kingsway & Chinatown stores to carry....

Perhaps we could do a group buy in the future ....

Kerrigold is the only obtainable 100% grassfed butter here ... I think that is the reason for a few people these days .... (including me).

About Stirling - I went to Costco again yesterday, they were all gone but the sign is still there making me think that it will be restocked and the price is $5.49 for 1 lb so less than 1/2 price from Whole Foods...

y
yatyat commented 8 years ago

I saw 84% Stirling at Costco (just off Willingdon) yesterday, I have a feeling it's less than $6 for 1 lb as I think it may be a couple of dollars more than the cheaper one which I think is less than $4. But I wasn't paying a lot of attention as I have decided to just go to trader joe's to stock up on kerrigold once in a while.

pretty sure you can get them at the Vancouver Farmers Markets ....

Beef stew freezes very well so you bf can cook a big pot of it and freeze in serving size portion, salmon can be cooked in the oven easily, fritatas and quiches also freeze well....

Hope you have a fast recovery.
