Hey there - does anyone know if Cochon is a decent spot for a solo diner?

Shocks me that nobody mentioned House Brasserie - easy walking distance next to Grazie. Grazie is great and worth going for if in the mood for pizza. I'm still a huge fan of Citizen Public House and The Mission, both really short uber.

I am interested in an update as well, but I think it might help everyone to focus on where you will be or where you are willing to drive as Kona is rather large. From my side we will be at the Fairmont Orchid (big surprise)and would love dinner recs and maybe a great mid week lunch rec off the beaten path, like a food truck or local spot near a beach kind of thing.

Forgot to mention Crudo, which is hands down one of the best dining and cocktail experiences in the Valley.

I have frequented both stores and I've found that overall, Whole Foods dominates AJs in almost every category. Interestingly and despite the pricing issues in the meat department, meat is one area where AJs may be superior in quality and price/value if you are not totally set on 100% organic. However, for everything else, I prefer whole foods.

I agree with the post below that AJs is a specialty store, but for the most part, nothing is all that special. The only item I like at ajs that I cannot get anywhere else is honeycup mustard. Other than that, I am a whole foods guy. The sushi and prepared foods as well as salad bar are not even close. whole foods kills them in that category.

Even though I've been to the DC/Balitmore area a few times over the years this is my first post to the board. I'm looking for a few good recs for solo dining near the white house. I am fine with cabbing, walking, metro, but I will have many long days while in town and don't want to spend too much time in transit. I am staying at the W all week. No restrictions on diet .

As for types of food, I would love a couple of good gastropubs mixed with some great ethnic spots: thai, vietnamese, sushi, latin, etc. I am really open in this regard and DC is great for hitting up different cultures and flavors.

For cost, I would like to keep it somewhat reasonable and I'm fairly good on the higher end upscale spots (this board has those covered pretty well), but if there is a deal or bar at one of the nicer restos that would make sense for solo dining - feel free to bring it up. Thanks for the help.

I would drop Noca, Cowboy Ciao, Atlas Bistro and P. Bianco. I have never been to Pig and Pickle.

I recommend Citizen Public House, Virtu, The Mission, The House Brasserie, and The Parlor.

+ 1 for CUT, - 1 for Prime. CUT is superior but Prime is a better location.

I am planning a fun birthday weekend for my wife and a group of friends. On the last night, it will just be me and my lady. I am planning an "old school" Vegas night out. We are starting out with a reservation at the Laundry Room for some crazy good cocktails. What would be a good dinner spot that has that old school Vegas vibe with great food (maybe more on the romantic side, but definitely a rat pack vibe too (Elvis can stay at home)?

Italian and steakhouse are the most likely option and we are leaning towards Italian, but I am open for other suggestions. Cost is not an issue and as we will be out and about downtown to start and are staying on the Strip - we are flexible about location.

This is meant to be a bit of a fun topic so have at it. The reviews on most old school italian spots are mixed at best and even the "top" italian places seem to invite a bit of dissent.

Thanks for the recs - yeah, 24/7 or open early are the ticket. Here. Is the eat downtown the same as the one on the Strip?

Thank you for your review of Blossom. I have an open night on my next trip in March and have this one on my list. What are your favorite breakfast spots on the strip or downtown that would be killer for after a long night of gambling or clubbing?

The folks below are right but in the spirit of quick help:

The Mission
Citizen Public House
Ocean Club
Soi4
Humble Pie
The Parlor
Four Peaks
The House Brasserie
Roka Akor (HH Lounge)
Zinc Bistro

Please note: I am not including some killer spots in Phoenix - downtown or otherwise.

I love this discussion. One question: is Carnevino fun? Would anyone here take a 10-12 person group for a great time as much as a great steak. Certain steakhouses are meant for a great time while others are more on the fine dining side and somewhat stuffy. Yes, I would put N9NE and STK in the "club" category with more of a party vibe, but I will admit that the one meal I had at STK was excellent from start to finish including the service. Most of the CHers know I love CUT. I have had consistently great meals at Delmonico's and have eaten at most of the steakhouses mentioned on this board - but not Carnevino. BTW, agree with you wholeheartedly on Prime and Stripsteak too.

Thanks for the review, I was curious to know how this new location would turn out. Maybe a little early for final judgement as they clearly have a lot of kinks to work out with the food and service.

Parlor for sure. You have to try their arancini if you go too (best I've ever had!)

Thanks for the solid report. Too bad about e, we truly love Jaleo, but the experience is totally different on all levels.

Not sure where you are staying, but my boys are big foodies and love The Mission, The Parlor, St. Francis, Humble Pie, and Hiro Sushi.

Mozen at the Mandarin Oriental is ridiculous - my favorite Sunday brunch.

I would avoid Chelsea's kitchen. I used to be a fan, but my last experience there was underwhelming at best. To start their cocktail list and craft beers are embarrassing and they have not kept up with the times as far as craft beer and cocktails are concerned. The food itself was hit or miss. They basically overcooked everything that swam prior to hitting the fire....

As most on this board know by now, I am a fan of The Mission and CPH. You also can't go wrong with Cowboy Ciao, Roaring Fork, or Zinc Bistro. If you want to reconsider menus with fixed courses, we had a fabulous meal at Crudo. A truly fun place to eat and drink.

Careful...I recommend using the terms "Americanized" or "not entirely authentic."
