Hm. We went to Curate before The Plague descended - and it was absolutely packed, expensive and not all that great an experience because we both felt crowded and rushed. Not sure how they are handling seating right now - you might want to check before you book. There is no outdoor seating.

As far as actual food items are concerned, since it's a tapas place you should be able to find something that pleases each person in your party. I don't recall anything on their menu being spicy, and all their offerings are Spanish influenced. No Mexican.

Be sure to take the picky 3rd grader to The French Broad Chocolate Lounge:
https://www.frenchbroadchocolates.com...

Everyone seems to love White Duck, too.

Most other restaurants we have been to there are more on the fine dining end, so I won't list those unless you are interested in that.

I second this. They're great - and I also took a cooking class from Paolo which was a lot of fun, too.

The Umstead Hotel will be doing Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 6 pm in their ballroom. This year it's a four course plated dinner with choice of entree and family style sides.

I have 5 oz. of poppy seeds I can give you if you are interested. They're from Penzey's - I ended up not making the things I bought them for. Shoot me an email if you are interested. I don't know of any local place you can get that much easily. Penzey's is the place I've always gone to for them.

Orange County is maintaining a list of restaurants and their status - either offering takeout/delivery OR closing for the time being. It was just updated today.
https://www.orangecountync.gov/Docume...

I also got a message today from Guglhupf - their dine-in area is closed, but the bakery in Durham and the bake shop in Chapel Hill will remain open, and in addition to their usual bakery products, you can now order a range of foods from their web site to be picked up at either location. https://shop.guglhupf.com/guglhupf-to...

I agree with other folks they're more of a homemade kind of item so farmer's markets would be the best place to try. They're usually put up in the fall though so not sure they'd be available at this time of year. I've never seen them for sale in a store here in the Triangle.

My immediate reaction to this question is: Durham. Chapel Hill/Carrboro is second. If cost of living matters to you, Durham. But just remember that this area has undergone a lot of change in the last 10 years so anything is possible in the next 10.

Also looking forward to Nomad in Hillsborough, which will hopefully open next month. The owners also own Viceroy in Durham and plan on what they call a 'global tapas' menu. Should be fun!

I've taken one class so far at Convivio. It was not as hands-on as I typically like, but they don't really have the space for that. The food was delicious though! There were about 15 people in my class and we helped make ravioli with a cheese/parsley filling and butter/sage sauce and cappelletti in brodo. It was lovely to have a class taught by an actual Italian - chef Paolo was challenged to precisely explain stuff in English at times, but I am sure that will change over time. He and his business partner are charming and it was a lot of fun. I very much hope they will succeed and I recommend giving the restaurant and the classes a try.

Bin 54 is also worth a look too (though someone told me they'd gone recently and had a not-great experience, so there's that too).

I've been afraid of this for awhile. The store has been looking sadder and sadder each time I visited. The cooking school was still great, though. A real loss :(

The Village Diner in Hillsborough has good pancakes.
If crepes count as pancakes, there's also Vin Rouge in Durham. Their Sunday brunch is very good. Also consider Carolina Crossroads in the Carolina Inn. I can't recall if they have them for Sunday brunch, but they do for breakfast the other six days a week.

I'm worried about them. The cooking school is still good (I just went to a cheese making class and it was great!) but they have nowhere near the selection of anything they used to have on the sales floor. I used to be able to go to U Mall looking for just about any cooking implement and could find it either there or over at KitchenWorks. Now Kitchenworks is closed and I'm not sure of the future of Southern Season either.

Yep, I was just there two days ago and noticed that as well - in the "International" aisle instead of where all the other mayo is.

Bikers at the actual bar. Picnic tables for seating in the rest of the place. Cement floor. Cinderblock walls. Metal garbage cans chained to the floor or tables for the beer bottles. Maybe a few crappy pool tables and a crappy loud band on weekends. Menu: cheap beer and jack and coke. Not much else.

Southern Season used to have them, but they have become really sad lately in their selection :(. Maybe call them to see if they plan to get any in for the holidays?

I too prefer Cucciolo Osteria over Mothers and Sons. I'll also throw Dos Perros in the mix. I've always really enjoyed my meals there.

Due to the gas explosion that happened a few days ago, St. James Seafood and Torero's in downtown Durham will be closed indefinitely. The building that housed Kaffeinate, the coffee shop whose owner was killed, is gone. Multiple GoFundMe accounts have been opened to help the owner's family. It looks there are also some fundraisers going on to help all the workers who are sidelined due to closures.

I have an old friend who is from my hometown of Cleveland who still lives there but works for a company in Raleigh. He mostly telecommutes but visits the HQ a few times a year. He says he really would like a 'mom and pop' type establishment in this area like what he can find at home, and by that he means a hole-in-the-wall German/Polish/Eastern European place. Guglhupf and J. Betski's are both very good, but what they serve isn't mom's home cooking. He's happiest around a good cabbage roll. I don't know how well a place like that would do here, but we sure don't have any now.

All I can tell you about the oysters is that they have them. I'm not an oyster fan, so I never order them. At least at this time, it's a single item on the appetizer menu, so there's no choice of different varieties as far as I am aware.

Not Chapel Hill or Carrboro, but since we never have Hillsborough threads I thought I'd put these here:

The new Village Diner has been open for awhile now and it's getting good reviews - here's Greg Cox's. I haven't been yet but hope to go soon:

https://www.newsobserver.com/living/a...

No website for this place, just a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/VillageDinerNC

The House at Gatewood has been open for about a month now. It's a steakhouse and oyster place. I went last week and had the best burger I've had in a long time. Husband had the brisket and thought it was pretty good. It's a bit pricey but you sure won't go away hungry.

Website for them doesn't have much, but there's a reservation link and a Facebook link which has photos of the menu:

Also a little story about how that place came to be: http://www.newsoforange.com/business/...

Shoot me an email if you want to go. I can do lunch most Wednesday afternoons if that works for you.
