If you happen to be planning a trip to the L.A. Zoo, the café in the Autry Museum right across the parking lot is a good spot for lunch.

Oh, Avila Valley Barn has great pies. Usually Apple, Apple Crumble, Peach, Olallieberry and I think Cherry. Can't remember if I've seen Strawberry Rhubarb but check their website.
They have them fresh baked in the bakery department and ask what they have in the back if they don't have the one you're looking for. They bring new pies out every 15 minutes. Also big turnovers if you don't want a whole pie... and Apple Crisp, Olalliberry Crisp and I think a mixed berry Crisp. Last time I was there, pies were in the $13.95 range and the smaller crisps were 8.95 but thick with berries.
They also have them frozen and uncooked if you wish to bake at home. I believe they use frozen berries from the farm for the pies because they still offer Olallieberry in October when Olallie season is July.
I don't think their little ice cream cabin sells slices of pie but they do dish up Apple Crisp ala mode.

When we pass by the area we always stop at Oak Pit BBQ out towards Oceano for a tri tip sandwich and some fresh cut chips. Gerald's Chocolates is another must-stop along with Avila Valley Barn (for an Olallieberry Pie).

I read that something like 70% of restaurant patrons currently have "special requests" for the kitchens these days. I imagine it can get maddening.
Plus you don't want someone ordering say a pepperoni, peanut butter and bell pepper pizza and then posting an online review stating that "the pizzas here are terrible." I can understand wanting some semblance of "control".

But I would have taken the BLT with mayo, rubbed all the mayo off with a knife and asked haughty server to take the knife away, ha ha.

Green Bean On Water in Exeter. They keep it simple by doing just soups, salad and sandwiches, and they are all excellent. You won't be disappointed

The only Meyer Lemon Cake that I can remember seeing on a menu was at The Brown Derby, they were famous for it.

Dunno what kind of lemons they use but we do cartwheels for the Triple Layer Lemon Curd Cake or Lemon Raspberry Cake from Doan's Bakery in Woodland Hills.

For coffee, muffins and cupcakes, Doan's Desserts in nearby Woodland Hills, near where Ventura Blvd ends.

Also be sure to try Tifa Chocolates and Gelato if you haven't already.

Bolley's in Waterville will reportedly open under new ownership in the near future. The couple who took over the lease claim that they'll keep everything the same, we'll see.
Don's in Augusta has a sign that says "Dogg Housz" in the front yard, looks like they'll be reopening soon...but the new name probably signals a new menu and (sadly) different French fries? Will report back once they've reopened!

had a really GREAT chocolate chip cookie from Sinners n Saints on Lincoln (near Washington) in Venice. Still a bit warm from the oven, loaded with chips, not too sweet.....no nuts and I'm not sure if they also sell cookies with nuts. Crispy edges, chewy center, just the perfect cookie. $1.00 each and didn't want to fight the traffic to go back for more (it was 6pm)...but next time I think I'll call and order a dozen , will certainly score me some points at the office.

La Galleta has (sadly) been closed for awhile. Another higher-end little bakeshop has opened in it's place. Good shortbread and pecan squares.

Thanks, hadn't seen the previous thread. (And would have just as soon lived a nice long life without reading the first 2/3 of that gobbledygook. )

I didn't know that Michael Palmer owns McConnells. Did Jimmy McConnell pass away? Maybe Michael "smug" Palmer is the reason the pints are suddenly everywhere, but have gone up from $4.29 to $7.99 in just a year. I kept blaming Jeni's for raising the price bar.

No guar gum, no locust bean gum, no carrageenan...I hope Michael Palmer keeps it that way.

Yay and double yay.

For any of you who swoon over Scoops Ice Milk or Quenelle's Sweetened Condensed Milk , step up for some real CREAM, baby.

Our last trip to Burger Bar was a disaster. Both the fries and onion rings were frozen and the burgers were dry and overdone. Yes it was extremely busy that night but they should be better prepared for that. Grabbing from the freezer when things get rough is not acceptable.

I haven't seen raspberry-apple pie anywhere, please let us know if you find one and it's good.

Johnathan's
Julie's
Fox's Lobster
Fisherman's Catch
The Steakhouse
Wells Beach Burgers (and ice cream)
Mabel's in Kennebunkport, Allison's in Kennebunkport
Merriland Farms Café for a great breakfast!

Not an area where you'll have any trouble at all finding yummy eats.

oh, and everybody's gotta try a Flo's Hot Dog once in their life!

If you're ever on Route 3, try the pancakes at Lori's Café. Right next door to John's Ice Cream in Liberty.

The Big Texan is memorable, it's fun and there's plenty on the menu besides "huge steaks". I'd go with that. In Vegas, Canaletto at the Venetian hotel is nice, casual but upscale and right by the "canals". Fine in khakis but they'll have a memorable experience, maybe even take a "gondola" ride. However, in Vegas people often end up dining someplace close to where the day takes them. It's not convenient to, say, have tickets to the Cirque show at the MGM but then have a certificate to dine at Wynn. So it's a little hard to recommend something convenient. The strip is huge, and on some nights traffic quite congested.

Best fries are at Burger Bar in Mandalay Bay (the fat fries not the thin fries...the thin ones don't stay hot long enough). Be sure to get the ketchup/sauce sampler to go with the fries.

I'm not sure if any of the "Fat Tuesdays" slurp drink locations on the strip are still frying up potato chips, last time I passed one they were selling bags of commercial chips.

It's their regular French bread...sprayed with water and branded, to give the top crust a crisscross crunch.

Retro is well worth the trip......or the $20 delivery charge to the strip. Their cupcakes are less expensive than Bouchon's on the strip (so if you're getting a dozen or more the delivery charge is moot.)....yet every bit as good and in a wide selection of delectable, imaginative flavors. Can't wait to hear Uhockeys review of Pucker Up, Cookies and Milk, and The Big Kahuna at Retro. Brownie Sundae is my fave rave but only available on Fridays, I think.
Since you're local, uhockey, be sure to sign up for Retro's eclub, they have a special deal every month.

Layer's Bakery and Café, check their menu and see if there are choices that wet your palate. Best meatloaf sandwich ANYWHERE but split one so that you have room for an Almond Toffee Bar or some Peach Streusel Cake.

Their "Best Chocolate Cake" really is the best chocolate cake on the planet. And next time try an almond toffee bar....you didn't do your homework!

Canaletto at the Venetian, they'll love it. The menu is somewhere on the IlFornaio website.
Or closer to your hotel, Il Fornaio in the NYNY hotel, more casual than Canaletto but still that great bread and plenty of choices.
