Hi! Not OP but here is a wonderful dish that easily feeds a crowd that may be what rascal444 was referring to. It's definitely a crowd pleaser https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/188...

None of those restaurants are cafeteria style. What is that exactly? It's either a cafeteria or it isn't. Fred's Country Kitchen is also not in business anymore. Great article!

Commercial bakeries use dough conditioners https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dough_c.... Those give it that impossible-to-recreate-at-home flavor. Although Amazon sells it, so I guess you can!

It's icy and there are large empty pockets in the container. Sometimes the container was only 2/3 full. Tried it, won't buy again.

We always broke the curved end of a candy cane off, which left a sharp edge that poked into the orange perfectly.

All the best to you and your recovery! I hope these are appealing and helpful: jerky, (so many varieties now!) dates wrapped in bacon, yogurts, good ol' V-8 in little cans, fried chicken, quiche, cheeses, olives, cornichons, crackers or flatbread, homemade "lunchables", pb&j, the individual cereal box packs with little boxes of milk, ham biscuits. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/25273/sp.... These are good and can be frozen and a few pulled as needed. http://www.theendlessmeal.com/tropica.... This is very good and very versatile. Hope this helps!

If I am understanding your question correctly, this was common for the ladies who lunched. Dinner maybe not so much. Department stores almost always had a nice restaurant on premise so ladies wouldn't have to leave the store if they got a little peckish. Since they were already a captive audience, stores upped their selling game. Win-win! http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/photograp...

I eat that for lunch! I don't pick the crust off, either. It's a fantastic dish. They don't call 'em classics for nothing!

I think that's very tacky and intentionally cruel of the daughter to bring that up in polite company. I'm embarrassed for your poor, sweet, mother in law and sincerely hope someone shut the mouthy hippy down out of respect for your MIL. Reading that post has left a terrible taste in my mouth. ZING!

Georgia hit it on the head with the stuffed cabbage rolls. Corned beef, cabbage, and horseradish are also delicious with pierogies. You are so lucky to have handmade ones! Here is a link with more ideas http://www.polskafoods.com/100-ways-e...

Well, I should have been more specific. I probably won't change the way we do dinner, I planned daytime grazing. What I have planned is mostly cocktail party or appetizer type foods, offered every few hours. Fun stuff that will tempt him, get some calories in him, and hopefully make him thirsty enough to drink something. Sausage balls, stuffed mushrooms, deviled eggs, relish tray, fruit and yogurt, cheese cubes, liverwurst on party rye, tortilla roll ups, that sort of thing. I love bacon wrapped dates but don't know if that would be difficult to bite, but I guess his gums are pretty tough.

He gets up early and drinks coffee, then shuts it down. I've tried the bottled cold Starbuck's drinks, sodas, fruit juices, water. It's like some weird point of pride with him. Dehydration causes fatigue, he's already unsteady and will not listen when his son tells him he could fall. He is so not receptive. I did have some success with herbal tea, and upthread there were some good suggestions about fruits and high water content vegetables. I've seen him order a pretty good variety of foods, but mostly fried stuff. He can easily go all day (and probably has) without eating. He will have a morning kitchen in his living area, and manufacturers are making tiny 8 ounce cans of 7-up, water and juices so I've littered the area with baskets of them, hopefully he'll bite (or drink).

That sounds like a nourishing mini meal! He will love it. I know. I would say he has a hell of a sweet tooth but, you know....

I do have his late wife's seriously old school waffle iron (Westinghouse, with a cloth covered cord!) Seems like the perfect time to get it out and use it. Waffles can be dressed many ways, too. That's a great idea, thanks!

I love all of those things, too! Everyone has such great advice. Maybe I'm over thinking this.

He would probably eat cucumbers in sour cream with dill or cucumber sandwiches. Beets would also be great cold on a relish tray with some olives. Thanks, Madrid!

He loves all of those things, those are definitely his comfort foods. He is currently living with his "vegetarian" daughter, so were are really going to pork it up! I know better than to try and change that stubborn ol coot.

I have some herbal teas that I'm going to offer. I wonder how many taste buds he actually has left. I don't know if i should heavily season his food or if that would give him heartburn. I guess I should just make it pretty since he probably can't taste much! Thanks for the fruit idea! I was so bent on high calorie stuff, I neglected a whole wealth of resources right there.

Ain't that the truth! I made that mistake a few years ago when we were packing a UHaul in August and he was staggering around and wouldn't take a sip of water to save his life. He must absorb moisture from the air.
