No one has asked, but thought I’d post some of our favorite restaurants in Santa Fe. To be fair, we focus on New Mexican cuisine; I’m sure there are many other fine restaurants and other cuisines here too.
The Shed - extremely busy, but for good reason. Excellent green chili, red chili is also outstanding, but HOT. Probably the best chili relleno we’ve had here on this trip. Margaritas are great.
The Pink Adobe - I think this is an underrated gem. Excellent steak and green chili, one the best pieces of salmon anywhere. Great wine list.
Tomasita’s - very good food and margaritas, just barely a cut below The Shed.
Also need to put in a plug for The Santa Fe School of Cooking. We’ve taken three classes there now on New Mex and Mex cuisine. Outstanding both demo classes and hands on classes. They also have steered us to The Pantry as having great New Mex cuisine, but we haven’t tried it yet.
More to come...

Thanks very much for your suggestions. We made reservations for Cafe Sole, and will definitely stop by Blue Heaven for brunch on Saturday or Sunday. We may look into Louie's Backyard - we haven't eaten there in years.
I'll post a report when we return early next week.
Many thanks!!!

My wife and I visit Key West once or twice a year and find that we typically dine at the same three or four restaurants. The Marquesa is (in our opinion) the best restaurant on the island. The menu always features great seafood and the duck and lamb dishes make it hard to decide. Nine One Five and Santiagos are frequent dinner stops as well, and the buffalo shrimp at Alonzo's cannot be missed.
I am wondering if anyone has any other suggestions for dinner and/or lunch spots? We are very adventurous and love trying new dishes or new approaches to traditional fare. Your comments are most appreciated.

Also - John's Roast Pork was great! I also agree that the best sandwich is the roast pork with greens and sharp provolone. Tried the cheesesteak sandwich as well, but everyone kept coming back to the roast pork. The break is outstanding - it makes the sandwich. Thanks again!!!

Hey folks - we stayed the course and dined at Le Virtu last night. They didn't have squash blossoms, so we opted for a fried artichoke stuffed with the same creamy filling. Served over a bed of puréed Roman (fava?) beans. Very, very good. For our pasta course, my wife had handkerchief pasta with sausage, porchini, truffle and saffron. Again, very, very good. My pasta course was the Ricotta cavatelli with pork ragu - it was outstanding!!! Sauce, pasta and pork were perfectly prepared and it was delicious!
My wife and I then shared the second course and ordered the Fiorentina lamb porterhouse with local mushrooms - served medium rare in a light peppercorn cream sauce. We were rewarded with another outstanding course. Excellent piece of lamb and cooked to perfection!
For dessert we had the cheesecake, and honestly, it was a little dry. Lacked the creamy texture we have come to expect similar to a NY style cheesecake.
The portions at this restaurant are the perfect size. We shared an appetizer and I had the full serving pasta dish (pork ragu) and my wife had a half portion. These portions are not huge; you can actually have a pasta dish and still have room to enjoy the second course.
Overall, I give this place 5 stars on my personal rating (out of 5).
Thanks so much for your advice - now we are off to John's Roast Pork for a sandwich before we jump on a plane for our vacation.
Thanks again everyone for your thoughtful advice!!
Randy

Wow - thanks for all the advice! Now, to figure out which place for the birthday meal, then try to figure out what time to visit John's for the Roast Pork sandwich. I'll re-post when I figure out the reservations and again after we eat. Many thanks folks!! We really appreciate the suggestions!

We will have an opportunity to spend an evening and most of the following day in Philly on August 23. We would really appreciate a dinner recommendation for a special occasion (birthday dinner). We have had great Italian food in the city before, and also ate at Osteria, which was fantastic, but that was a few years ago.

We are staying near the airport, but cabs are no problem. The following day I have promised my wife an authentic Philly Cheesesteak - a nice big meal before we board a plane overseas for a vacation!!! Any suggestions for where to get one would be most appreciated.

This year I went to Whole Foods and bought a Wellshire Uncured Corned Beef (First Cut). I soaked it in warm water for about 15 minutes, then placed it on a large piece of foil. I combined 2T stone ground mustard with 1T brown sugar, then spread it over the top (fat) side of the brisket. I placed 1T of water in the foil, then sealed it up completely and put it in a 275 degree oven for 5 1/2 hours.
When I took it out and cut it, it was tender, yet still firm. The taste, though, was spectacular. It made one of the best Reubens ever. I used an organic sauerkraut that was much less salty and with less of the vinegar taste than regular sauerkraut and used aged swiss cheese and Marzetti 1000 Island dressing on Brooklyn Rye for a traditional Reuben.
Make no mistake, it was still salty, but not overpowering. Everyone at the table agreed it was an outstanding Rueben sandwich. The meat was tender and moist.

Thanks so much all your help. So far we have have booked Zebulon, AG Les Halles and Les Climats; and plan to visit La Bourse et La Vie and Premices as well.

Right now I'm trying to figure out where to eat on the night of our actual anniversary - Monday. We wanted to eat at Les Climats for our celebratory dinner and they are not open Mondays, so we opted for Saturday night.

Now I am struggling for where to eat on Monday. I am wondering about ideas for an elegant lunch on Monday. I asked about Guy Savoy, but they are closed on Mondays and it appears La Tour d'Argent is as well. Your ideas would be most appreciated. Looking for nice ambience but it doesn't have to be over the top.

Again, many thanks for your input.

Thanks so much for your comments. We will replace La Regalade and Oysters Hutrerie Regis with something else (may try to visit l'Avenue for the fruits-de-mer).

We are also going to try to get reservations for our anniversary lunch at Les Climats and will probably save Guy Savoy or La Tour d'Argent for the next trip - hopefully a weekend next year...

i'll also try to spell Premices correctly next time...

Any additional thoughts or places to try while we are there? (and thanks so much for your blogs Mr Talbott, they are extremely helpful) Your ideas are most appreciated.

Hi everyone - my wife and I will be spending 10 days in Paris in early December to celebrate 30 years together. We have been to Paris a few times and eating at great Parisian restaurants is always the highlight of our trip. We are staying in the 1st and doing the tourist/museum thing, but we are really focused on the food experience.

I'd really like your opinion on some lunch or dinner ideas, but so far this is what I am considering:
- La Regalade St. Honore - we had a great meal there a few years ago and it has the advantage of being near our hotel and open on the Monday when we arrive
- Salt - new recommendation by John Talbott
- La Bourse et La VIe - we will probably eat there twice - once for lunch during the first week and at dinner the second - it is getting great reviews
- Oysters Huitrerie Regis
- Premises
- Cornichon
- Bouillon
- Clamato (I know reservations are not needed, will go there for lunch)
- Bistro Belhara

Now for the tough part. I want to take my beautiful wife to a place to splurge and celebrate our 30 years together, but I am really torn between:
- Le Cinq
- Guy Savoy
- Epicure
- Spring

Also - should I consider Restaurant David Toutain among these?

Not sure I can get reservations in early December at any of these, but worth a try.

I really appreciate your comments.

I will certainly post highlights (and any lowlights, if applicable) when we return in mid December.

thanks all

I have lived at SML for a few years and found a couple of excellent restaurants, some good ones and a bunch of really marginal ones. I thought I would post some of my experiences and see what other folks either living here or visiting the area think about different eateries in the area.

My wife and I just ate at a newly opened restaurant called Eastlake Restaurant. We had hot buffalo wings, a cheeseburger and a chicken caesar wrap. The wings were moist and cooked to order. The cheeseburger was made from fresh beef and served on a nice, fresh bun. The chicken wrap was full of nice, moist chicken, not too much dressing and just the right amount of romaine lettuce. We shared a bottle of wine and the total bill was around $55 with tip. (the wine was about $22), We considered this a home run and will certainly return. Nice restaurant (just completed and opened a few weeks ago) and it was fairly busy on a Saturday afternoon.

Please let us know your thoughts about this restaurant or any others in the SML areas. Thanks for reading.

we didn't eat at R'evolution (couldn't get in) but have heard really good things about it.

Try the fish and chips at Bidwell Restaurant in Union Market. They are the best I've had in DC. Fresh cod with crunchy beer batter, perfectly cooked. Great fries with spicy ketchup. Delicious!

My wife and I recently found the best fish fry we've had in years at Bidwell Restaurant at Union Market (1309 5th St NE, right in Union Market). The parking lot is right at the Market. We've eaten there twice in the past two weeks and it was fantastic both times. Fresh cod in a nice, crunchy beer batter and some terrific homemade fries served with their own spicy ketchup. You get a single, very large piece of cod; my wife and college-age daughter can't finish theirs, but I can't leave my plate alone until it's finished. Cooked perfectly, served with tarter sauce and, if requested, malt vinegar. Terrific! They also sell fresh oysters that are difficult to turn down and have a very interesting menu.

Thanks for the comments. I think I'll try it on one of my cast iron pans.

Has anyone tried using food grade linseed oil to season a pan? I recall reading that this works so well that you can actually use soap on the pan to clean it up after cooking. Definitely DO NOT use regular linseed oil.
Thanks

Went to Etete last night with 3 foodies and everyone agreed that the meal was great. A couple of Wats (chicken and lamb) with veggies and some grilled beef (Tibs?). Great injera. Very reasonably priced. Great service.

Where is a good place for Ethiopian food here in DC? Would prefer either U Street or Adam's Morgan, but can metro or cab to other places in downtown DC.
Thanks

I know this is dated board, but I had a great meal at Obi Sushi in Reston Town Center last week - excellent scallops. Everything except the eel was excellent. A little pricey, but they also have a very good sake list. This is consistently the best sushi in the western burbs that I have enjoyed.

Thanks Bubba - I will certainly try one of your suggestions.

Anyone have any opinions on either restaurant. We used to go all the time and enjoyed the wild pork and fresh flounder dishes, but haven't been there in over a year. Any feedback on the current dining experience?
thanks

My wife is from upstate New York and has grown up eating wings with her pizza. Is there anyplace nearby that makes acceptable versions of both? They don't need to deliver, but it I can't find anyplace that does a good job of both. Any ideas?

We had the Wellshire Farms uncured corned beef brisket as well. They tried to fix the color with beet juice, but it didn't work. The flavor, though, was terrific.

I've had good luck at the Acadiana downtown - good BBQ shrimp (cajun style), gumbo, blackened redfish and fired green tomatoes. Not strictly authentic cajun by any stretch of the imagination, but they do seem to provide very good dishes with a cajun or creole flair. Somewhat expensive, though.
