Thanks, Parigi. Given that NYE falls on a Friday, it looks like we will head to Rue Cler. Is there anything in particular that this market is famous for that we must buy?

As for the champagne question, it might seem like a silly question but, technically, where I live you can be issued with an on-the-spot fine for doing so, even at New Years.

Hi all, rather than another post about where to eat out for NYE, I thought I would ask about the best place to eat in. Well, not the best place to eat in, but the best place for supplies and some suggestions for the type of food that might be available.

We are staying in the 7th. Can someone recommend the best market around this area and, perhaps, some of the specialties that this market might be best known for? I haven't planned far enough ahead to think about what we might like to eat, but I would assume oysters, caviar, champagne, etc for a decadent night in - we will be in Paris, afterall!

Likewise, does anyone have suggestions as to where to view the fireworks at midnight? Although I don't particularly want to be at the base of the Tower with the traditional tourist bunch (I don't mean that to sound hypocritical as I am a tourist), but would love a slightly more "secluded" place that is very Parisian with a nice view of the Tower and fireworks. Any takers?

Also, is it permissible to have alcohol on the streets in Paris? For instance, a bottle of champagne and a couple of glasses?

Thanks for your help.

Hi all

I have been in touch with the Tourist Office in Strasbourg who have given me a list of restaurants which are open throughout the Christmas/NY period. I have had a quick look and a few have interested me (or, to be honest, they are some of the few with websites which sent them to the top of my list). Does anyone have any thoughts/recommendations as to the following places?

La Cuiller a Pot
L'Amuse Bouche
La Bourse
Au Dauphin

Obviously I need to get moving quite quickly to make a booking for Christmas Eve (dinner) and Christmas Day (dinner or lunch). Otherwise I'm assuming that ethnic restaurants may be open if that particular culture doesn't celebrate Christmas, which could be a last minute option if needed.

Thanks in advance.

Agree with all of PhilD's suggestions and would add the following:

Rockford winery in the Barossa Valley. Charming little cellar door.

Windy Point Restaurant in Adelaide. About 15 minutes from the CBD (very do-able in a cab) and perched on a hill with great views of the Adelaide skyline (what little of it there is) at night.

Punch Lane in Melbourne. This place is underrated, in my opinion, but I really like the atmosphere and the food.

All have websites which are pretty easy to find using Google.

This is what my wife and I will be doing on NYE. We have made a booking at Le Grande Cascade for 30 Dec, and will be spending NYE feasting on food and wine picked up from the market, before hitting the streets together...

I may be opening a can of worms here, but is anyone game to rate the following list in their order of preference?!

Would love to hear from others as to recommended dining places in Paris. We will be there at the end of this year. Although we will be in Paris for 1 week, we are the flying to the Maldives to continue our honeymoon which will “stretch” the bank account somewhat (or just put a rather large dent in the credit card). For this reason, any top-end restaurants are out. Also, this is primarily a “tourist” trip rather than a “foodie” trip so we’ll probably look at 3-4 nice places to dine and, other than that, will either buy food from the markets to prepare ourselves or just eat at a place which is convenient to wherever we are at the time (hopefully avoiding too many tourist traps).

To be honest, my SO is a somewhat “safe” eater and she doesn’t eat pork either. Ham, yes... bacon, yes... pork, no. Go figure! She mainly eats chicken, seafood, lamb. Hopefully this doesn’t restrict us too much as to options, especially with set menus.

Anyway, here are some places that I’ve shortlisted so far (in no particular order), depending on bookings of course:

Chez l’Ami Jean
Violin d’Ingres
Les Fables de la Fontaine
Spring (perhaps wishing thinking re bookings??)
Le Regalade St Honore

Would love to hear other Hounds’ thoughts on whether the places listed above sounds suitable to our requirements, as well as any other places that we ought to consider.

We are staying on Ave de la Bourdonnais in the 7th but don’t want this to limit any recommendations. We are happy to travel as long as it is relatively central, and don’t want to spend all of our dining time in the one neighbourhood anyway.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks to you all. We have booked accommodation, so will perhaps give them a call to see which restaurants they recommend. Otherwise, ChefJune, I will follow your recommendation and call some restaurants directly. Thanks again.

Hi all

My soon to be wife and I are travelling to Europe this winter to celebrate our honeymoon. We are from Australia, so looking forward to experiencing a European Christmas. We will be in Strasbourg for the few days over Christmas before heading to Paris for a week over NYE, then Rome after that.

Does anyone have any knowledge of restaurants in Strasbourg that are open on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day that they can recommend? Any budget is fine. We are just a bit worried that (wherever we are) nothing will be open on Christmas Day.

Thanks in advance.
