Gotta say, I wouldn't send an out of towner to Barbarella. It's ok, but the menu is pretty basic - Piatti has better food. Do agree with the George's rec. It's the best "killer view" restaurant in town by far - fine dining downstairs, more casual upstairs on the terrace.

Good to know! Wade Hageman was the opening chef at Blanca and we've always liked his food. Just wish it was closer!

I automatically assume "La Jolla" means the village, I forget that places in UTC call themselves "La Jolla" too. ;) Trulucks is in the UTC area, east of the 5. That being said I have no reason to think they won't provide the kind of menu you're looking for and I have heard good things about the food. Enjoy!

I thought I responded to this, but maybe it got deleted - or maybe I just spaced. In any event, just wanted to add Blue Ribbon Pizzeria to your list if they haven't already been. It's in the Lumberyard.

It's about $10. per person more expensive than what you have in mind, but other than that I think Eddie V's fits the bill perfectly. If you are ok with a more casual menu, George's Ocean Terrace would fit within your price range.

Ah well, to each their own. We have had so many bad experiences at Chloe for dinner that my husband won't even go there anymore - which is why I usually go during the day. It has to be lunch with friends. FH does have a smaller menu - and the seafood dishes are usually what I order - they seem to change pretty often and the brunch menu changes weekly. And Chloe is definitely open all day, whereas FH is dinner only.

As far as your SD proper request for a celebratory meal (I am guessing it will be for a group?) I would suggest Farm House Cafe, Jayne's Gastropub, Brooklyn Girl, Bankers Hill, Cucina Urbana or Searsucker. All of these are downtown or uptown. If you go to Jayne's ask to sit outside in their back garden. (No cocktails at Farm House, but good wines.)

For oysters and beers - if you really love beer, Tiger! Tiger! in North Park is worth a visit - they serve only one kind of oysters but they have them, and they have fancy sandwiches and lots of great microbrews. Otherwise, if you want a view you are pretty much down to Fish Market. If you don't mind paying a little extra, their upstairs spot Top of the Market is a little nicer and has a great view.

For fish tacos - you are going to get a "shack" experience at Tacos el Paisa. Frankly I think what you are looking for exists primarily in Mexico but the closest you'll find is probably at Mariscos el Pescador's truck in the Toys R Us Parking lot in Chula Vista. At least I assume that is where they are still parking - I haven't been there in ages.

You might also consider adding Carnitas' Snack Shack, Starlite, Cafe Chloe & George's Ocean Terrace to your list. George's California Modern is fine dining, but the terrace upstairs has a great view and serves burgers, sandwiches, salads and good cocktails for lunch and dinner (same menu as the bar - the bar also has some nice view tables.)

Chloe is open all day for service and is more of a "true cafe" with casual seating - whereas Farm House is dinner only every day except Sunday when they also serve brunch. Farm House has a traditional dinner menu of appetizers, mains and desserts with the main dishes (except for the burger) served fine dining style, where Chloe serves a menu of standby "all day" dishes like their frites, the cheese plate, brandade, etc. and a few mains such as steak frites, moules, a bistro salad, a tartine, and maybe one or two other dishes plus a special (at least at lunch, I rarely go for dinner.) Farm House's menu changes more seasonally whereas Chloe seems to maintain largely the same menu year round, bringing in specials and maybe rotating one or two dishes on or off the menu based on the time of year. Chloe also offers an afternoon tea which is really nice and does great desserts (the fruit tart with creme fraiche ice cream is TDF.) Farm House has more professional wine service (and better prices - especially on half price nights Tues and Wed) and though the service can vary at both places, I think Chloe tends to be a little more relaxed. You definitely don't want to go there if you have to be in and out in an hour! The owners take Thursdays off at Farm House and they do a "beer and sausage" night that day that I haven't tried yet. We usually go on Tues or Wed, since the half price wine night is such a great deal.

I don't think it's accurate to say Chloe is "much better" than Farm House. Cafe Chloe and Farm House are very different. I love Chloe, but I have had occasionally had bad experiences there with both food and service - mostly at night. Some meals have been better than others at Farm House, but it varies much less in my experience, and the service is far more professional.

DD - Thanks for sharing about this place. REALLY want to get down there and try this and Mision 19. Have you been there?

I am far from an expert but I really liked Tajima - and it was highly recommended by people who know their stuff. There are two locations - I'm talking about the one on Convoy.

We've been twice now and really like it. The oyster sliders and half chicken are fantastic. Good cocktails too. Wish it was within walking distance but it will definitely be on the rotation!

believe it or not, a couple of the baristas at Peets in Hillcrest do a really good job - the shortish dude with the forward combed hair and the tall blonde woman. The last time I was there I had to have a new barisat re-make my drink though, so it's not always consistent.

I really need to try Zumbar. I go to a gym in Kearny Mesa and I very often stop at Peets afterwards for coffee - one of these days I'll have to swing by there instead.

I think SOL and what you are talking about are two different things. There is still a plan afoot for something like this in the old police station by Seaport Village - supposedly it will contain a Pizzeria Mozza. I don't have time to look up the link to the article now, but I just saw something about it a month or so ago on SOSD.com

Clearly, everyone who goes in there needs to ask for a spoon! I have never known them to bow to pressure on any of these other ridiculous restrictions though, so I doubt it would work here.

Regardless, I do love the idea - something different for SD - and I plan on trying it for lunch next week - should be interesting!

I saw that - but $145 is a lot for a turkey, even a humanely raised one. We don't absolutely have to have one this year since we are joining friends for the meal - so we will probably pass.

Curtis did turkeys last year, but not this year. I'm bummed - we fried one of his last year, and since it was not just a giant ball of breast meat, it worked really well. Still looking for a similar option for this year!

Wasn't really making a comment on what the chefs on the list had to say, as much as the fact that the only two meaningful comments (imo anyway) came from chefs. Sorry if that was unclear.

Second the Beef n Bun recommendation. I also had a malted peanut butter milkshake at Ruby's the other day and it was smashing. Corvette also does good milkshakes if you can tolerate the environment. :)

I think it's interesting that the two chefs are the only ones who really offered any meaningful commentary. The rest of it seems a little redundant - mostly about the scene and the lightbulbs. I haven't tried it yet, now that they're open for lunch I may try to swing down there. I am also more than a little amused that my boss - Gary Schons - is on this list. That's more than a little weird.

Just FYI - Brandt is not grass fed beef, it is wholly grain/corn fed. It's a common misconception that their beef is somehow more humanely raised. It might be on some level, but not in terms of what the cattle are fed. It is is a lot more expensive than other brands.

I like Market a lot - the atmosphere is a bit sterile, but the food is always very good. Carl is a fantastic chef.

I think their dark chocolate and red velvet are great - the strawberry, lemon, banana and vanilla can be a little tough sometimes for some reason. Also love carrot and chocolate marshmallow (a must if you like the old fashioned hostess cupcakes!) As you can see, I have tried just about every flavor! I am hoping to get up there on a Tuesday soon, to try the orange. :)

The guys at PLS told me to ice them down before cooking specifically for that reason. It seemed to work. The thrashing when you pick them up is a little unnerving though!

it makes as much sense to me as putting rice on a sandwich. Blech.
