If you find yourself trekking to Yosemite through Merced on Hwy 140 I recommend a few places along the way.
Carnitas Barajas
Hwy 140
Planada
They have excellent carnitas and chicharron, but I really enjoy the Birria !

Ramon’s Tacos
Hwy 140
Planada
Ramon’s known as some of the best tacos in the area. The attention to details makes their tacos stand out.

Vista Ranch

Hwy 140
Merced
A nice place to stop for a glass of wine and a wood fired pizza.
They use produce from their own local gardens and farms.

I haven’t been yet myself, but it has become popular in the area and the consensus its good.

Ballico is a tiny farm town that sits across from Delhi on the old Santa Fe hwy .

Too bad you could not spend more time in Santa Barbara... probably one the most beautiful beach cities on your itinerary although the food there is underwhelming.
Lucky Penny is good for pizza.
I also like French Press for coffee and pastries.

In SLO I liked Flour House Caffe Roma for Italian and Scout Coffee.

I can’t offer much on Davis other than Sudwerk brewery.

For Sacramento :
Temple Coffee
Philz Coffee
Corti Brothers
Organic Co-op grocery store
Mikuni
Camden Spit and larder
Masullo pizza
Taylor’s Market
Cantina Alley
The Kitchen (splurge worthy)

Elk Grove
Quan Nem Ninh Hoa

Thanks for sharing your experience.
Sounded like a great meal especially the
Cecina.
Crazy 180 days aged??!!!
I've heard mixed things about Capricho, it claims to have 'lo mejor chuleton del mundo' , which sets the bar pretty high, but no one has ever challenged that claim either which is kind of funny.
Although on Steak Revolution (Netflix) , they said it was one of the best they tried.

You definitely have some serious steak cred having eaten at Luger, Extebarri , etc..

Some of the better steaks I've had over the years were from 5-dot ranch in Northern California.
They supply local high end restaurants as well as sell to the public at their store in Napa.
I definitely want to try Extebarri, Luger, and possibly Las Lilas.

I think either Chuleta del Buey aka Rib Eye or Chuleta del Buey 'Premium' are a must.
Pretty sure both are aged 30+ days and come from older cows raised by the chef.
I am assumimg premium has more marbling or from a more exotic cow.

See of they'll let you pick the steak out.
Please report back as whether it lived up to the hype.

Had some excellent tacos a while back in Porterville at a place called Chaguito's.
Ordered lengua, asada, and carnitas.
Everything was very fresh with lots of flavor.
They also had an excellent salsa bar and house made marinated carrots.
Definitely one of the better classic taquerias I've been to in a while.
The taqueria also sells some pretty good pan dulce.
If you are in the area, definitely worth a stop.
According to my family in the area, Chaguito's has been around for a long time and had expanded their original location due to popularity.

Finally did deep pit a while back with my family in Tulare area.
We did 50lbs of beef, 1 cows head, and 1 leg of lamb.
We purchased the meat from J&R Meat Market in Porterville and they prepared the meat with their own seasoning.
I was impressed with the freshness and quality of their beef.
The beef 'chuck rolls' were then put into their own foil bags .
It was a lot of fun and the meat came out excellent.
My favorite was the beef head, just a great subtle smokey flavor and very juicy and tender.
Here is a short video of what we did.

Finally cooked up the 'King city' pink beans, tasted similar to a pinto bean.
They were pretty good.
Soaked them overnight, then cooked them with a little smoked bacon and smoked proscuitto 'speck' , onion, garlic, paprika, and tomato puree

I recommend Masullo as well.
Of course their pizzas are great but the baked foccacia is addicting.
Also like their appetizers and specials.

Amaro is another new casual Pizza/Italian centric place in downtown Sac.
Really enjoyed the mushroom pizza and meatball appetizers.

The Kitchen is awesome and definitely a unique experience but pricey and expect dinner to last 3 hours.
I heard the 'intermission' meal there is Spanish influenced this time.

Taylor's Market, Corti Bros, and Natural Foods Co-op are my standard grocery stops.

Check out Temple Coffee as well.

Hope you stop and see Santa Barbara , even if overnight.. beautifui city and great weather.
For LA , the previously suggested Bestia is a great option. Also had some great late night street tacos nearby at a place called 'La Reyna' that was ironically featured in Bourdain.

Cotogna in SF is one of my all time favorites, but is similar to Bestia with wood fired pizza and grill .

Glad to see he is still around.
There was talk he was going to close a couple of years ago .
The pizza was quite good both times I went .
Their nightly specials are excellent as well.
We ordered a pork shank with polenta that was great.

Cool story thanks for sharing.
I grew up eating this food in the Paso and Pismo/Slo areas.
It's a bummer to hear the crackdown on the bbq stands. Those really added a great local cultural food element to the area.
Has anyone been to the SLO Thursday farmers market?
Have not been in 15 years but they used to have several bbq vendors selling ribs, chicken, tri-tip over red oak.
I cook tri-tip on a regular basis over a mix of charcoal, red oak, and hickory over moderate heat about 15-20 min per side depending on the thickness

Had good results with the 'Basque Marinade' overnight, but the meat also marinates well in a Temporanillo, Rioja, or Malbec wine.

Never been but heard the 'nata' custard pastries are good.
Escalon is a charming small town, and the area between there and Oakdale is an interesting route of unique local businesses.
Lopez imports has a huge selection of pottery and imported goods from Mexico.

Santa Barbara is one of my favorite places but the restaurants are mostly underwheling and overrated there.

I liked:
- French Press for coffee/pastries,
- Santa Barbara Shelfish for seafood
Its a touristy place, but they do have some good local catches like spot prawns and crab. But not worth long wait.
- Lucky Penny for simple wood fired pizza.
- Toma Italian looked good but did not get to try.

On the way to SB, Jocko's in Nipomo is worth a try for dinner only since they fire up the wood grill at night.

Beware Agaves, some of the worst Mexican food ever, despite what Yelp etc. say, food is just ghastly and slapped together.

Hope you make it despite the detour due to the bridge in Big Sur down.

Worked in Riverside several weeks back in 2014.
Mario's Place Italian restaurant was a good option down the street. Pretty good pastas and meat dishes.
It was higher priced but never felt dissapointed.
Also enjoyed Augie's coffee which is an excellent 3rd wave place a few blocks from Mission Inn.
Other than that, there were a lot of your typical chain restaurants ie Cheesecake Factory.

If you go the Merced route there is always Bella Luna bistro, Little Oven Pizza, or Trevinos mexican restaurant. On Hwy 140 there is Vista Ranch winery that serves limited food options and Ramon's tacos.

The Prospector in Twain Harte is good if you are near the area, but not worth going out of the way for.

Was in Bologna two weeks ago, what a fabulous city! Would definitely go back there some day.
Simoni was excellent, their salumi was the best I ever had. The culatella, coppa di testa, spicy salame, and mortadella are a must.
Also ask for some of the Mozarella di buffala.

A local recommended Sfoglia Rina for lunch. It was excellent.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...

For dinner ended up Trattoria Battibecco, had an excellent veal cutlet and the requisite tortellini en brodo.
Struck up an conversation with a local eating there. He had the roast sucking pig chops and I was envious.

Hope you have a great trip.
Try a Spritz either Aperol or Cynar.

Going to Granada, and walking the narrow streets of the 1000 year old Albycin neighborhood and looking out across at the majestic Alhambra.
Tapeando 'Tapa bar hopping' in Granada/Andalucia, enjoying a caña of cerveza, jamon Iberico, and fried anchovies.

And of course the Alhambra!!!

Walking inside the Reyes Catolicos cathedral and the final resting place of Ferdinand and Isabel that bankrolled Christopher Columbus and defeated the Moors..

Barcelona is a fabulous city as well, the Park Guell was my personal favorite as well as the 'Born' district.

Looking forward to returning to Spain and exploring the Basque regions and Cordoba (Mezquita), and back to Granada.

Btw, just got back from Italy (Florence/Lucca/Bologna), had an awesome time, both Italy and Spain offer amazing and unique experiences whether it is food or historical sites.

That is a great spot, it always seems packed. Glad to see they are growing and successful. They received an award several years ago for best espresso in the country.
I had an affogato at that location a while back.

BH,
Thanks for the reply.
I have not been to Fred's BBQ but it sounds interesting.
I agree about 24th Street and Sequioa.
Forgot to mention, I also like Frugatti's.
They have some pretty good options on the menu especially the ones from the wood oven .
BTW, do you remember and old coffee shop/lunch spot in the 80s called Travelers that was in the Pumpkin center area of Bakersfield?
I remember going there as a kid.

I've nocticed that mobile Safari private mode on iPhone does not work for creating posts.
In step 2 'Write your post' nothing happens.
But it does work in mobile chrome, but I prefer Safari for privacy reasons.
Also , the page loading and navigation is more difficult now in mobile browsing.

I've been traveling to Bakersfield since the 80s several times a year to visit my family there, and grew up eating at Woolgrowers and Benjis.
Recently, I was going to Bakersfield weekly and got to explore a little more and revisit some of my favorite places.

Salty's BBQ: Finally had a chance to visit their location on Rosedale. I remember when this place was called the 'Rib Shack'. Ordered Tri-tip beans, salsa, and some beef ribs. The tritip was a little on the dry side, the beef rib was excellent.

Fuego's Tacos: A popular taco trailer on Rosedale. Tacos were decent but nothing special. The Fuego fries seem to be popular.

Ruben's Mexican Restaurant: Decent Mexican food, I would say their carnitas are a must try.

Loncheria Otro Rollo on White Lane (trailer) : Love this place, some of the best Mexican food around period.
The potato tacos topped with carnitas, lettuce, and chile sauce are a must.
They also do good taquitos and excellent barbacoa tacos .
Recommend ordering ahead, this place gets busy at lunch.

Basque...
Lot's of good old Bakersfield Basque threads on CH (although the search option does not return as good as results since the revamp)

Here are some of my recent experiences.

Woolgrowers: Still a great place for Basque American food. I've had some inconsitent meals in the past, but lately the food has been good. I always go with the lamb chops or oxtails.
Was talking to the bartender Jose aka JC from the Navarre Basque region. He is making excellent Spanish style chorizo and curing jamon now and sells some to customers.
I took some chorizos home and grilled them up, they were really tasty.

Noriegas: Finally got to try their dinners during the weeknights which I prefer than the fried chicken and bland oxtails they do on Sat.
It's a fun place to eat, but the crowds can get a little too drunk and loud at times.
Tue night: Steak and Chicken Cacciatore
Nice big Ribeye steaks and juicy braised chicken.
Wed night: Prime Rib and Lamb stew
The Prime Rib was excellent while the lamb stew was ok.

Farmers market:
Stopped by the Sat farmers market on Brimhall/Calloway .
There was some nice organic options and got a nice cold brew from Rig City coffee. The guy mentioned they are going to open a coffee shop soon.

For Vietnamese, I like Paradise restaurant

For Mexican, tacos/mariscos Tijuana.

Merced Sunstar did a write up on best tacos in the county.
Glad to see a couple of my favorites Ramon's Tacos and Tacos Reyes getting some publicity and recognition.
