Has anyone seen fresh huitlacoche (also spelled cuitlacoche, and also known as corn smut), the blue fungus that grows on fresh corn, in stores or farmers markets in NYC? It's on a number of menus of better Mexican restaurants, where are the kitchens getting it from, or are they using canned and jarred?

Has anyone found or seen in Manhattan supermarkets butter molded in the shape of turkeys? I'd like to get some for my Friendsgiving dinner. Thanks!

Success! Found them at my local Fairway. That was easy -- and saved me a trip to Brooklyn. If that's their mini babka, I'd hate to see the big one! Also got some cinnamon rugelah!

Thanks, everyone!

Thanks for YOUR clarification! I wasn't sure if your "easy enough to find" referenced the location of Green's or the Google search. I'm fully capable of searching Google, thank you, but I also come here for personal recommendations (as mentioned twice in my original post). I did my due diligence: I searched Chowhound Manhattan first for previous recommendations, then went to Breads' website to check on selection and hours where I saw their ingredients lists for their babkas -- and yes, I googled as well. I wasn't being lazywebs -- sometimes asking people can be better than asking search engines.

Thanks! I'm going to try Fairway and Whole Foods first (closer), but it's always good to know other sources for the future -- or if the first two places are out of it.

Thanks for this! It's a friend's nut allergy, but not so severe as to have to be made in a nut-free facility. I'll check out Green's! Maybe my Chelsea Fairway has it and I can save a trip to Zabar's.

Thanks for this confirmation. This sounds like the one to get.

Many recommendations here for Breads bakery's babka, but they put walnuts in their cinnamon one and Nutella (hazelnut butter) in their chocolate one. Does anyone have a recommendation for an excellent babka that doesn't contain nuts? Manhattan preferred. Thanks in advance!

Thank you all for your suggestions. After further research, I decided to go with the one from the patisserie at Alain Ducasse's Benoit. They were so sweet on the phone, asking only my name and phone number and when I wanted to pick one up. Payard's selection looks wonderful, although I prefer a more traditional log. And I should have remembered Financier since I love love LOVE just about everything they make.

I will try and post a picture of Benoit's buche de noel after I pick it up on Friday.

Who has the prettiest, and/or yummiest Buche de Noel in town?

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

What's your favorite dark chocolate ice cream? I'm looking for something intensely chocolate and creamy -- my favorite was Godiva's Belgian Dark Chocolate, but that's no longer available. Any exceptional examples out there?

Now that Godiva ice cream is more, I'm still trying to find a suitable replacement for their Belgian dark chocolate ice cream. Somebody recommended Cones on Bleecker St which I visited again last night, and while their tropical flavors are quite good, their dark chocolate isn't all that.
