Hi,

The casinos have happy hours - I like the one at
http://www.silverlegacyreno.com/dinin...
didn't care for
https://www.circusreno.com/restaurant...

as does Silver Peak (and a nice patio for warmer weather)

I believe some casino steak houses have early bird specials.

1 more Mexican rec is right across the street, near the McDonald's on Virginia. It's simple, "divey" decor but good food:

Know of no S. Indian places - most popular is India Kabab
http://www.indiakababcurry.com/
which is a moderate walk down S. Virginia

and haven't tried this Asian place - right behind the bridge tourney locale:
http://goldenflowerreno.com/menu/

El Adobe, near the ballpark, is a bit of a walk - decent Mexican

Noble Pie Parlor - nice pizza. On a bit of a gritty street (for some) -not sure every tourist would feel comfortable walking there. Hard to predict everyone's comfort level!

P.S. Peg's is very popular for breakfast/lunch
http://www.yelp.com/biz/pegs-glorifie...

and the casinos have decently priced breakfast buffets - my family likes all El Dorado buffets

Hello,

I understand that for a 9.5 inch pizza - you have doubled your basic recipe. Is it possible to learn the multipliers for 12" and 14" pans? Many thanks.

Now that I have no access to Amaya's - I'm in withdrawal. Has anyone attempted to make their salsa? I think if I could nail that, I might be able to approximate my so loved bfast tacos. Consider leaving bfast tacos if you consider leaving Austin!

I'm hooked on Amaya's Taco Village - but only for breakfast tacos w/o cheese. The 'free' ingredient of a la mex (tomatoes, jalapenos, onions) really adds to the generous portions. For $3.01 I get enough to satisfy bfast and lunch - (1) egg, potato, a la mex (1) bean, egg, a la mex

Salsa rocks, too.

Hi,

In the end we got (way too much) mustard potato salad and vinaigrette coleslaw from Ruby's. Almost double the cost - but as it was a special occasion we liked Ruby's best after tasting Green Mesquite and Catfish Parlor. Thanks for the help!

Hello,

Any leads on what org. might accept remaining food from a wedding buffet? It will be collected late Friday night and needs to be delivered by noon Saturday (due to limited fridge space).

Hate to waste ...

Hi,

I'm leaning towards Catfish Parlor - still need to get up there and taste. Not to mention they are 1/2 the price of Ruby's.

They will make any of their sides (they rotate daily) with advanced notice - any other ones to recommend? Vegetarian sides are a bonus.

Would be glad to know of a good existing list of Happy Hours and/or suggestions for "good" deals on that part of the isle.

Last year Gannon's was very nice - as I recall.

Thank you.

Hi,

As a parallel to my initial quest for good ready-made coleslaw I'd like to ask about potato salad. Seems some think coleslaw is not loved by all and potato salad would be a better side. Jury's still out. I'll reiterate the situation:

I'm hosting a party with Rudy's BBQ as the main event. However I don't care for their sides. Any opinion on the best ready-made potato salad in Austin?

Thx

That sounds good - still on the fence to make or buy. Would you be able to share the recipe?

Many thanks - will enjoy the tastings around Austin.

Hi,

Thx

I had the same experience of being ignored by management. Never went back.

I believe Tamale House East had such an item on the menu.

I'm copying this from another's post - but also had the cake made for a special birthday and it was very good and enjoyed by all (hopefully you can get it made w/o alcohol).

"Gateau Marisa at Upper Crust is always a crowd-pleaser. Really dense, and not cheap but very yummy. Description from the site:

A traditional yellow cake layered with pastry cream and a choice of fresh sliced strawberries, bananas or a combination of the two. Iced with a cream cheese icing and topped with whole strawberries. (contains alcohol)"

Thank you. I ended up with samosas from SWAD and they received good reviews from the attendees. Skipped spring rolls.

Thank you for the good input. I may go with SWAD due to location. Any opinion on the fresh veggie spring rolls between Tam Deli and Thanh Nhi (as they are also close by)?

Hi,

I'm looking to serve veggie samosas and veggie spring rolls for about 15 folks. Any opinions on the best places to buy them? Swad and Curry in a Hurry are in the running for Samosas @ $1 if I buy 20. Not sure if each is equally tasty and substantial.

Thanh Nhi for veggie Spring Rolls? I'd like the 'fresh', non-fried variety.

Thank you,
Anj

Hi,

Wondering if anyone's tried Takoba's, El Azteca's or Sazon's chile relleno? Sound like they might fit the bill. The annual search for a chile relleno the folks would like begins again ...

I prefer Taj Grocers over MGM for pricing and selection. And SWAD is next door - which is okay, IMHO. Fiesta Grocery has a decent selection of Indian foodstuffs - at least at the 39th St. and I-35 location.

Hello,

I live in Austin and might meet my folks as they have a 2/3 hour layover (3:30 - 6:30 on a weekday). Not familar with the area, and seeking advice on a place to grab a bite. My dad's vegetarian and likes Mexican (especially chile rellenos), Italian, and buffets. Nothing fancy - we're simple folk.

I realize the timing might limit choices - as some places close at that time.

Thanks,
Anj

Hi,

Sprouts is selling them now - which doesn't seem very safe. How far ahead to you think a fresh turkey can (should) be purchased? I plan to try a dry brine.

Hi,

Sorry if repetitious, but I went by Bylbos on Wednesday and found the space empty. Have they relocated?

Hi,

I appreciate Crown and Anchor's selection. And the pricing - specials every day for the entire day. Sunday's a bargain with no pint pricier than $2.75, I think. Food is greasy bar food - and the nachos are yummy. Wouldn't call it cozy - but I like the typically, ahem, older grad student crowd.

Hi,

I find their combination of counter/waitstaff service odd and chaotic. For instance, you get your own red pepper flakes, but are brought parmesan. One orders and pays for a beer at the counter and then waits for the server to find your table (often a difficult task due to the low elevation of the numbers) in order to get your brew. Among other oddities.

The Parlor system of counter ordering and then self serve for plates, spices, water, etc. seems more logical.

And, I find the food so so in quality and value.
