We have been to Lola's several times, usually the Charleston location, but also in Summerlin. The bronzed catfish with Gouda grits is a must order for us.

There is a Sprouts Farmers Market at 4020 S. Rainbow Blvd that has fresh veggies and fruits at reasonable prices plus bulk dried fruit/nuts and granola.

Did you show the server your Backstage Pass (slot card)? It is required to get the $7.77 price, otherwise
you will be charged $11.99.

I've had many celebrity spots in my life, but one of my goals is to find you walking a lap at South Point after dinner.

Alfredo's Patisserie @ 3650 Jones Blvd offer tamales for takeout that were very good. We stopped
by in late Nov and tried both the red chile pork and green chile & cheese.

Multiple accounts indicate the plan is to operate in both locations.

Dave or Melanie - after the repairs will LOS continue in business at both locations?

Dave - I agree based on my meal in April. I had the beef-lamb gyro plate and thought it was good, not great. The serving size was very generous to the extent I could not finish it. I am looking forward to trying the more upscale Elia (Durango) which recently opened. Another nearby option should you be staying at the South Point is a second location of Great Greek that also just opened on Blue Diamond.

I did not try one, but I saw Kougn Amann at Whole Foods yesterday.

Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night will stop me in my quest, or so it seems, to find the worst pizza in Ct. Yesterday I found a top 5 contender in the Copaco shopping center. A sign advertising pizza by the slice captured my eye, but I should have retreated when I found none on display. Another red flag should have gone up when I realized I was the only customer this Sunday afternoon. Lastly, I should have folded my sails when I witnessed the sole employee taking a piece of mystery meat out of the freezer and tossing it into a vat of hot oil. My only excuse was, a sorry one indeed, the gauge on my tummy was registering empty so I tossed caution and my taste buds to the wind by ordering the luncheon special of 2 slices of cheese pizza and a can of soda for $6. Not a bad deal you say? Yes, a bad deal on multiple levels. My go to pizzeria has the same deal for $3.50, but more importantly its pizza is 10, no 100, times better than at Gino's. These slices were small though in retrospect that was good. Secondly, the toppings of tomato sauce and what passes for mozzarella were brown. Lastly, the crust was a little too thick, lacked chew and devoid of flavor. A trifecta of mediocrity. Trust me on this because I have more experience in such matters, a better pizza may be found in your local grocer's freezer case. Next time I suffer from hunger pangs in the immediate area of Gino's, I will continue on to Blue Hills Avenue and make the short drive to Scotts' Jamaican Bakery for chicken patties.

Oops, the above comments and photo of the ribs apply to Pig Rig BBQ in Wallingford.

On Friday I picked up a rack of ribs to enjoy at home. The dry rubbed ribs were tender and delicious with the only mild disappointment being the ribs had been sauced and cut into individual ribs. Next time I will request them dry and cut in half.

I believe the Jasmine brunch has been discontinued. The website indicates dinner only beginning at 5PM.

I cannot find on its website, but according to both the Las Vegas Advisor and Vegas Eater, there is a dollar oyster happy hour at db Brasserie from 5-6 p.m. Daily (limit is two dozen per person) in the bar and lounge.

Bear's and Taino were 2 that I was referring to. I had a decent pulled pork sandwich at the
Pig Rig in Wallingford recently and want to go back for some ribs.

We were planning on dining at a tapas restaurant, but found a sign on the door stating it would be closed that night so Smokin' With Chris turned out to be Plan B. Having never been in the restaurant before, I was surprised to find the parking lot almost filled on a Thursday evening, but in retrospect it may have been because it was ½ way to St. Patrick's Day. In any case it was noisy in the dining room with an almost full house plus a singer on stage. After reviewing the menu, my wife and I decided to share a full rack of baby back ribs along with sides of collard green and mac and cheese. The house made mac and cheese is supposed be prepared with a cheese sauce blended with chili powder and assorted peppers topped with panko though we found it dry and tasteless. Perhaps we received the kid's version? We fared only slightly better with the collard greens. The ribs were tender with a nice smoke flavor, but suffered from too much time in the smoker and tended to be very dry at the smaller end. I normally don't use very much sauce on dry rubbed ribs, but I spent much of my time with a bottle of BBQ sauce in hand. Overall, I feel the food was just okay, but a notch below the better BBQ restaurants currently open in CT.

It was an on again, off again rainy Sunday morning so we chose to sit in the back away from the open windows, but the quality of my photos suffered due to the darkness. We were initially handed dinner menus, but a second waiter exchanged them for the brunch ones. We began by sharing an order of French toast nugs described as being crispy bourbon vanilla challah nugs with Bourbon Barrel maple syrup. My initial impression that we did not receive in the way of food for $10 though after taking a first bite, I told my wife she made a mistake by not ordering them as her entree. Her first bite resulted in a grimace. With that one exception, every other nug was burned and dried out. This apparently was the norm for at least this day because the couple at the next table were grumbling about their order.

We each ordered a crab cake Benedict which turned out to be the worst we have experienced this side of a Las Vegas buffet. The egg was overcooked, the Hollandaise sauce was sour tastingand the undersized crab cake possessing more filler than crab. On returning home I compared my photos to those of prior diners and was shocked by the dissimilarities. I now covet my neighbor's Benny.

The highlight of the meal proved to be hash browns with in-house made ketchup. Lastly, the coffee was served lukewarm though the pot seemed to be steaming.

We have now dined at Oak Haven a total of 4 times with this being our first brunch experience. Based on these visits, I can only conclude, paraphrasing an old Jerry Reed song, that when the kitchen is hot, it's hot, but when it's not, it's not.

There was no white spinach pizza on my 2nd visit, but I did get another slice, okay 2 slices, of the red spinach pizza that I think may have been better than my first visit. I also took home a large Hartford Cream Pie that was quite good, but more than I really need so I am going to try freezing 1/2.

1244 Meriden Ave

A few days ago I read that this pizzeria won the annual Southington Pizza Fest for the 2nd year in a row so plans were hatched to give it a try. We called ahead to order a large cheese pizza and were told it would take about 30 minutes. I printed off scenic, albeit incorrect directions from Mapquest and headed off. On arrival there was one person waiting for takeout and so I gave my name and waited. As it turned out, there were two large orders in front of me totaling well over $100. I finally received my cheese pizza and returned home following a more direct route. Immediately on opening the pizza I realized the crust was thin, but a bit thicker than I prefer, not a major problem. More of a concern was the crust which was dried out while lacking any discernible char. Though the pizza sauce and mozzarella toppings were okay, they were not nearly good enough to offset the disappointing crust.

1650 E Main Street

I did not know what to expect on entering this unassuming middle eastern bakery for the first time. I looked around and was surprised that there were not more baked goods on display so I ended up asking the owner if he had any spinach fatayer, a.k.a. pies? He said yes, so sight unseen, I ordered a pair. After he showed them to me, he placed them in a small paper bag. I inquired if he had spinach and feta fatayer? Yes was the response to which I responded, I will take 2. Lastly, I said is that baklava in the dessert display case? Yes, well give me 2 of those as well. On returning home the 2 of us, my wife and I, each had a spinach & feta fatayer that featured a light crust, a bountiful filling and wonderful, tangy flavor. Though the baklava was not as light as I am accustomed to, it was no less delicious. I asked my wife if she had luncheon plans for today, alas we will be sharing the last 2 fatayers. 2 final notes - prices are more than reasonable, actually crazy cheap, and the various types of pita looked mouthwatering. Will I be returning? I will give you 1 guess and no is not an option.

You are right on the spelling. We also found prices on the high side, but the quality and service were excellent so I have no complaints.

On our first night I wished we had gone to Green Elephant as I originally intended instead of the Olive Cafe.

259 New Britain Rd

This bakery is a welcome addition to our town. Although it only opened for business last month, the owners previously operated St. Rita Bakery in Rocky Hill. I arrived shortly after the doors opened seeking breakfast pastries and found a selection of muffins, elephant ears, strudels and more. I purchased a pistachio and a lemon muffin that my wife and I shared. While waiting for my order to be bagged, I asked the owner about the difference between lobster tails and sofgliatelle which are both offered. He mentioned that a batch of sofgliatelle were in the oven and would be available in 10 minutes if I wanted to wait. The muffins were light in texture and well flavored. The sofgliatelle were a disappointment, crispy on the outside, but the filling was way too dense.

26 Main St, New Britain, CT

We again, third time, had dinner at Mae Kong and it was no doubt our best yet. We began with the crispy lemongrass chicken appetizer - deep fried chicken that was lightly battered and oil free served with a sweet chili sauce. My wife's entree was red curry with chicken. The chicken was tender and the vegetables fresh though the curry was probably a bit thinner and less complex than we have had elsewhere. I found my entree, pad prik khing, listed under the house specials. Stir-fried chicken, fresh string beans, red and green bell peppers and kaffir lime leaves in spicy red curry paste. A stunner both in looks and taste though be aware that there is a bit more heat than some of their other dishes. We each opted for brown rice that was both nutty and moist. Service continues to be both warm and efficient.

I was in the immediate area to purchase seafood from City Fish and decided to stop in this pastry shop. My intention was to bring home a Hartford cream pie that had recently been mentioned in a Hartford magazine article, but it looked a little too large for just the 2 of us so I settled on a pair of sfogliatelle. These were fresh with a crispy exterior, but virtually devoid of any filling. We fared better with our spinach and cheese Sicilian pizza slices that served as our lunch that day. These were much lighter and more flavorful than any I have had from the Big 3 (Modern, Dibacco, Mozzicato) on Franklin Avenue. Prices seemed more than reasonable and the staff was helpful. I am already planning a next visit which will include more Sicilian pizza and a pair of filled-to-order cannoli.
