I actually went to Pat's tonight for the special collab with Solomonav, and of course the flavoring was down to the special, but I'd have to say that the steak seemed decently cooked and interacted well with the roll. It was a little hard to tell how the onions were. It seemed promising enough, though. (Pat's seems pretty neon as well, though....)

Oh yeah... asking them to attempt to bring things out in a certain order/together is always an option. XD No harm in it... the staff all seemed nice, anyway.

I guess they're excusing themselves from pacing things because "they encourage sharing" so if only their guests would just hop on the bandwagon it's not individual entrees coming out but "plates for the table" so magically no one is left waiting for their food. XD

Well... 99% of the time I'm dining alone so I really don't care too much about pacing or even what order things come out in... also I tend to eat earlier or later on weekdays so places aren't so busy.

Anyway, I was there once but 2 of the things I ordered were specials; I also had the pigeon, which I was just kind of curious about. And the banana cream pie dessert, which was kind of what you'd expect. I was sad that the "city chicken" I think Laban had mentioned in his review wasn't on the menu anymore, I'd never heard of this faux chicken dish before!

lol, just responded to arepo's post about this from 2+ weeks ago because the page reloaded from page 2 and I just saw it there... oh well.

There were actually two different soft shell crab entrees? I was wondering if soft shell crab season were over yet (I had some hard shell maryland blue crabs in chilli crab from Sate Kampar tonight and was thinking about it).

I haven't eaten these and I'm not actually sure what OP means (haven't eaten that many bagels the past several years) but if the boiling step is really the issue, knead bagels boils theirs as well:
http://www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2014...

I consider going in each time I pass knead bagels (as well as each time I pass spread bagelry) but it hasn't happened yet. XD

OFFICIAL is a lot more succinct than "community-enforced repository for all subjects concerning restaurant X"... and allcaps is easy to spot in an initial search.

l
lepidoptery commented 6 years ago

Well, I tried to kick off that convention with the OFFICIAL thread thing but the community didn't seem to want to play along. (Or maybe they just didn't have much to say about Aldine or Dizengoff....)

Hm? I didn't think you were speaking to me, just noting that while I monitor the Philadelphia tag (by having a tab opened to it constantly), I didn't notice this post reemerging. I only noticed your comment (that I replied to) because chowhound notified me of it (since I am subscribed to the post, having commented on it previously), but chowhound hadn't notified me of any comments between the ones on 1/9/16 and yours.

After 1/9/16, I did not get an email update for this thread until your comment.

Will you have a car? I don't think it's as foodie as the other suggestions, but maybe http://www.judahgrill.com/? I don't know if they are open, but I don't see an obvious announcement that they won't be.

Fette Sau over Percy St for food! (Dunno about drink.) Of course it is very casual, as compared to only somewhat casual. This is just my opinion backed by no particular standards for bbq whatsoever, though.

I think it happened often enough under the old CH... to me that's a feature, not a bug. (See the "is a hot dog a sandwich?" zombie thread... only sort of kidding....) The thing about the new CH is that the remaining userbase seems less inclined to post overall, and especially to make new posts. That leaves more people replying to aging posts.

It seems like such a simple thing, I may even have tried making it once... but I hope there's a place that makes it a way I like so I can have a better goal for what to show for. It's been a veeeeeeery long time since I'd visited Chengdu.

I'm glad this thread was revived! Han Dynasty serves most of my spicy chinese food needs, but they don't have ants up a tree on the menu. Now I know a couple places to try it... or just one near my mother's in NJ, if it's not available from four rivers('s replacement).

lepidoptery commented 6 years ago

I don't know of such a place, unfortunately, but... I also don't know of an area referred to as the "diamond trade district" in Philadelphia. You don't mean jewelers' row?

I've been a bit underwhelmed with the whole line of restaurants, as intriguing as their menus tend to be. I usually manage to order a very solid dessert, though.

...?

They probably just did a search for dettera and didn't notice the date.

http://philly.eater.com/2016/1/1/1069... I guess they didn't want to continue the restaurant concept without the original chef/co-owner? Or it couldn't legally continue anyway?

l
lepidoptery commented 6 years ago

Well this thread was started 4 years ago... perhaps there has been improvements since then? Maybe someone would be able to say. XD

This list is going to get updated 4x a year now; if there's no churn it would be hard for foobooz to justify doing that, and if there actually isn't that much churn in the top ranks they might have to manufacture a bit~

Well, Barbuzzo/Lolita/Little Nonna's/Jamonera/Bud&Marilyn's are near there... and then she'd have her pick of those.

I was surprised to find tonight that Zahav is apparently one of them! Or maybe intermittently one of them.

lepidoptery commented 6 years ago

For lunch, I think the closest that comes to mind might be a.kitchen (unfortunately High Street on Market's lunch menu differs a lot from its dinner menu) or maybe V Street? Is this a weekday?

EDIT: actually, it seems a.kitchen's lunch menu differs more significantly from its dinner menu than I'd thought. Alas. So I guess you may as well check out High Street's menu.

Fette Sau has peking duck listed under their meats http://fettesauphilly.com/meats

But not currently listed under menu or catering... although I'd swear I saw it listed on the menu when I looked it up on my phone, because I went in half-expecting it to be there on friday (although it was not). Anyway, I'm pretty curious how it is, if it really does exist.

lepidoptery commented 6 years ago

Why do you think it will be that confusing if they post it on their menus where ppl can easily see it? Ppl tip at sit-down restaurants, but don't tip at fast food, fast casual, and cafes (unless they want to). In many restaurants if your party is over a certain size they will add the tip for you, and it becomes non-optional.

lepidoptery commented 6 years ago

Seems a bit early to know already, unless you just want suggestions for places ppl think will have pre fixe menus based on previous years. I mean, I'm still getting news about Thanksgiving dining options now.
