Hello! I am going to the Hyatt Huntington Beach for a family vacation with hubby and our two-year old son. My search of this board has not been very fruitful. What are the latest hot spots? We like markets and are open to a variety of eating establishment types. Walking distance would be ideal. The hotel is on PAcific Coast Hwy near Beach Blvd. Please let me know your thoughts about the following locations and add any faves. Bonus points if it is "toddler-friendly"

Water Table inside the hotel, Mangiamo for gelato, Dukes for seafood, SAncho's for a casual place in walking distance, LSXO for Vietnamese, Secret Spot towards the end of the week to make up for being naughty, and a few others. But, please tell me the best place to go for authentic and delicious tapas and let me know what is the best street food in LIttle Saigon and if there are any markets besides Surf City Tuesday nights. TIA!!

The only corned beef I have ever had in Arizona is at Goldman's Deli at the corner of Indian Bend and Hayden. I have no other comparisons. It was good enough to scratch the itch.

I hope that others can chime in with better answers.

Enjoy and good luck!

I just want to add that my favorite dessert of all time is kouignn amann. Please do not leave Montreal without trying this item. If you have had it in France, you will find it to be comparable albeit somewhat different in appearance. Someone has already recommended the shop but it is someplace that you may easily decide to skip if you are busy. Do not make that mistake.

My husband suggested that I recommend Maison Christian Faure but I have never been there. My go to place for dessert is actually an out of the way place called Arhoma in HoMa. They also have a little fromagerie and amazing duck sandwiches.

I am a New Yorker who has spent a lot of time in Montreal.

Quebecois items:
I think that poutine is disgusting (I have tried it twice) but it is a cultural experience so at least consider giving this local favorite a chance.
Also try tourtière if you have the opportunity.
Apart from these two foods there are not many unique regional items.
During the winter, I would recommend a cabane a sucre but you will not find this meal in August.

As you are from New York, I will not bother with suggesting that you try any of the immigrant neighborhoods but it is something to think about if you are traveling with visitors from smaller cities.

Montreal is amazing. Learn a few phrases in French to get around but don't stress. Most people are fluent in English. You will love it. Bon appetit!

Do you have any red cabbage? That will add a nice pop of color!

I was thinking carrots may be good due to the color contrast and texture contrast. Cabbage and potatoes are both mushy when cooked.

Green is a great food color as well. Maybe some chopped chives sprinkled over the top for mild flavor and a contrasting color?

I no longer allow myself to buy cookbooks because I have several somewhat expensive ones that I read like novels and rarely use. I have been known to curl up with a cookbook to unwind. If I were left to my own devices I would buy one per month.

But, people will occasionally gift me cookbooks. The last one I received was a Florida cookbook from my mother. It is small but packed with cultural tidbits and tasty fish recipes and desserts.

I also allow myself to buy cookbooks as souvenirs after vacations so I try to purchase one in the local language whenever I travel.

Why on earth would she tell you about this?! I am speechless. Very poor form. I hope that she is a relative or very close friend.

Good point! I am freezing below 80 so maybe my food becomes dangerous faster than everyone else's food!

Don't worry about transportation OP. Before Uber and Lyft there were taxis. They are still around. Get a company recommendation from your hotel and carry their card with you. If possible, try to keep the same driver for the duration of your stay. This is not always possible and is not really necessary but I enjoy the familiarity as a female traveler.

I didn't even realize that this area existed....

I tried Hello Fresh. It was a gift from a friend. It was exciting to have the ingredients mailed to my home. I felt like a child at Holiday time!

We canceled our subscription fairly quickly because the meals are completely pre-selected for you. My husband and I both have longs lists of things that we cannot/will not/do not eat and every box contained at least two offending items. The program is excellent and I would have continued if there was an option to eliminate certain categories of food and certain food items. I would also prefer more flexibility in delivery dates. Once we had too many meals and because of work and other dinner plans, I feared that the food would expire or go to waste.

I have not tried the other subscription plans.

What I really wanted was TryTheWorld. I attempted to get someone to sign us up for that for our wedding but no one did. LOL.

I would be careful with the cherries. I fear that they may overpower the other flavors.

What about lemongrass, cilantro, bell peppers, scallions, shredded carrots? I once had an amazing fish curry with macadamia nuts so maybe a few of those or peanuts?

Have fun with it!

Hello Chowhounds,

Here is my review of two restaurants in Santa Monica.

SMYC
My husband and I ate at the Santa Monica Yacht Club on a Wednesday night in early August. We called the restaurant to ask about parking and we were instructed to park the library/public garage across the street. There is also valet and street parking. The restaurant is on the corner and easy to miss because the signs read SMYC. My husband found it because of the nautical decorations.

The place was packed but we had a reservation and were seated immediately. We waited for water and for our drink order. There was no bread and we did not ask for bread during the meal. Please note that there were a few differences between the online Yelp menu and the restaurant menu.

We shared the sardine/avocado/cilantro crostini for our starter. It was excellent. The bread was firm without being crunchy. There was abundant avocado and perfectly prepared sardine.

For the main course, my husband choose the scallops with pea puree, tomato and morels. I believe that there were four scallops. It came unaccompanied so if you are hungry, you will need to order something else to have with your main course. He said that it was magnificent.

I choose the lamb kebabs and the grilled corn (without tomato). The corn was simple but flavorful and flawless. The kebabs were well cooked, non-greasy and went well with the sauces. I typically only eat banana in their natural state but the banana raita was clean and contrasted well with the harissa.

For dessert, we both ate brownies with caramel ice cream. It was good but not extraordinary. I would definitely return to this restaurant. I saw two tables order the grilled (enormous) whole snapper to share and I hope to try that the next time!
-----------
Upper West
We had dinner at Upper West on a Thursday evening.
Jam packed and noisy with what appeared to be the after work crowd. Stood near the bar while waiting for our table.
Service was a little slow but friendly. It seems that both of these restaurants are understaffed for the time of year.

I wanted the lamb crepes but decided on the chicken because I had eaten lamb the night before. The crispy glazed chicken was okay. There was not enough mango. It was my appetizer but I saved half of it (the portion was large) to eat with my main dish. I don't know when macaroni and cheese became a main dish but this is the second time that I have ordered it this summer. It tasted like mac and cheese. It was good but not spectacular. I had it without ham so perhaps this omission affected the flavor significantly.

My husband had the carpaccio and said that it was excellent. He raved about this starter.

We passed on dessert because we were full but ended up walking to Valentino's a few blocks away because hubby wanted espresso.
------------------
Valentino's

I didn't have anything besides water.
He had a limoncello and a molten chocolate cake. I tasted the cake and thought that it was very flavorful yet light.

I would definitely return for a meal one day to see what they have to order. We ate in the bar area/anteroom so I cannot comment on the restaurant. It seemed quiet/empty. The bar area was empty save for one guest and one server. This was Thursday night about 9:30. The neighborhood is fine for walking so you can easily have a meal in one restaurant and dessert and/or drinks somewhere else. We did not drive but I saw that Valentino's has a parking lot. There is also street parking available.

Enjoy!

Excellent Restaurant Week menu.
Beautiful grounds.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary dinner at the Royal Palms hotel restaurant.
The food was flavorful and well-prepared.
Highly recommended!

I just came to the site to write a review for the restaurant at the Royal Palms Hotel, T Cooks. It is not in North Scottsdale but look at the menu and distance. If you want something more casual and closer, consider the restaurant at Tommy Bahama on Camelback Road.

I was in the neighborhood and searched to find the best food around. There were excellent online reviews for this panaderia/pasteleria. I was warned about the appearance and location but went anyway.

All three pastries were excellent and low-priced. There is no ambiance and you can barely see the sign from outside but don't let that deter you.

Try the cheesecake!!!

La Casona de Laly vs La Criollita?

Any advice for my last dinner in Costa Rica. What I am looking for is EXCELLENT taste, 100% local, sanitary and open for dinner. I came up with the above two but what do you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,
Any recommendations for a great authentic breakfast at SJO early in the morning on a weekday? This will be my first meal in Costa Rica. I have four hours between landing and leaving the airport. I imagine that half will be spent with customs/immigration but I want to spend the other two hours eating!!!

There was one thing that I had never heard of before!

Does anyone know where to buy yeast in Scottsdale/Phoenix or the surrounding area?

I used to also believe that Chowhounds were "better" than certain beliefs but over the years I have realized that I was very wrong.

It is shocking that people can argue with this point. Obviously every dish can be associated with a region or nation or people group. Therefore ALL food is "ethnic" food. Describing some food as "ethnic" as others as "normal" shows a complete lack of understanding of the English adjective "ethnic". Look it up in a dictionary.
