Zon's -- finally

yumyum | Oct 22, 2007 07:22 AM

I haven't had a chance to get to Zon's, despite hearing such good things about it. Finally took a table on Saturday after 10 Tables didn't have room for three of us celebrating a birthday. It's great -- exactly the kind of neighborhood place I wish was in my hood. (N.B. Gargoyles comes close, but Zon's strikes me as a more comfort food type of spot, and Gargoyle's is more experimental, especially at the bar where I choose to sit.)

We were ravenous so shared three starters -- PEI mussels in a garlicky broth, a simple and perfect house salad with cabernet vin, and the star ... a roasted squash salad with blue cheese and bacon. The birthday girl had cod for her mains and the other two of us had the sirloin. The steak was great -- perfectly cooked rare as requested and served alongside mashed potatoes and some greens. This is one of those steaks that IMHO puts the $40 steaks to shame. No, it's not dry aged and no, it's not served in a fancy chop house, but for $25 *with* sides, it's a good value.

Dessert was some kind of bread pudding and some kind of chocolate thing -- I didn't care as I was stuffed by then. We had glasses of Malbec and one person tried the white sangria which has a touch of ginger beer ... unusual and refreshing.

Service was very low-key and friendly ... the room is really pleasant with tables not too close and lighting not too dim. It was the perfect spot for the occasion and I'd recommend it to anyone not wanting to break the bank but still enjoy a celebratory feel. Total came to $60/head which included tax and a healthy tip.
