Zon's disappointment

Zon's in JP has been a favorite for several years - very, very good comfort food at a reasonable price and in a funky, but pleasant atmosphere. We hadn't been for a few months (it's generally fall - spring dining for us), and we decided to bring a couple of friends recently. We disappointed to find some, IMO, very disappointing menu changes.

Housemade Chips and Onion dip - not super fancy or exciting, but always well executed and satisfying. We ordered it every time. Gone. I asked the manager why and was told "They were too much of a pain in the ass."

Meatloaf - They had one of the best meatloaf plates I've ever eaten. There were several nights either my DC or I tried to order and they'd have sold out. Again, it was simple, but delicious. Pretty much always came with superb mashed potatoes and vegetables, and, of course, awesome gravy. Now - it's turkey meatloaf. No mashed potatoes - baked beans and parsnips instead! I asked about this as well and was assured it was great; they were wrong. The old meatloaf was a destination dish for us. It was hard to try other things on the menu because of the opportunity cost. The new dish isn't something I will crave on winter night.

Finally, Mac & Peas - They still have several M&C iterations, including the Mac Daddy with sausage (which my husband ordered and it was as good as always). However, I did notice the Mac&Peas variation is now ---Mac & Edamame! I'm sorry, maybe it's good, but....I'm not with them on this.

Overall, we were incredibly disappointed. I had heard some talk about a lot of changes going on there because of personal issues with one of the owners, but I never imagined they would torpedo three of the best items off the menu while leaving the rest of it mostly alone. There were a couple of other menu changes, some losses, some additions (a lackluster chicken liver app that we tried), but none as seriously tone deaf as these. I am in mourning.
