Zesting a Meyer Lemon

I made spaghetti with a lemon sauce last night and was having trouble zesting my meyer lemons. The skin was so thin that I kept getting the pith on the peel. I ended up zesting it and scraping the pith off with a knife. Is that the best way to do it? Or was I making it harder than it needed to be?
