Zatar in Berkeley - mini report

Just wanted to let you all know that I did make it to Zatar this weekend with my honey - and we both thoroughly enjoyed the space and the food. My only real complaint was the size of the greens and beet salad - pretty tiny. Overall, I must say the portions are small - granted we did order all starters, but I was expecting a bit more heft for the price.

The food was all quite tasty, though; I especially loved the Mohommera (sp?) paste of walnuts, pomegranate and red pepper paste (and I swear something else is in there - something almost flowery.) I appreciated the light touch on the lentil soup with sorrel, and the shrimp with spanish smoked paprika are excellent! The partially whole wheat flatbread was nice and warm and crisp on the edges soft inside - perfect with the house Zatar spicing.

There is a nice wine list, but we stuck to a glass each of a fine Dolcetta D'Alba, the precise details of which escape me. The cardomom laced turkish coffee was a fine parting treat.

I would certainly eat there again - but on a weeknight, when it's perhaps a bit slower. But, I would not order a salad, there, again, I'm afraid!
